SHE-WI-002 - Barricades and Floor Covers Rev 1
1. To ensure potential hazards like falling from height, falling through floor openings, stepping into
floor openings, falling from edge of slab or building are eliminated on site.
2. To protect workers working at height or at elevated platform, open edge of slab and next to floor
opening.
3. To prevent persons from falling through floor openings by providing strong floor covers or
barricades.
Scope
1. All floor openings that are big enough to step right through and small enough to cause trip and fall
hazards need to be covered or guarded.
2. All open edges of slabs which person may fall from a height of 1.2m or more or may cause further
injury or infliction should be sufficiently guarded.
Descriptions
1. All barriers such as guardrails, covers for openings, shall be provided with warning signage of
multiple languages to warn person of hazard ahead.
3. Excavation deeper than 1.5m must have a barrier constructed from the edge of the excavation.
4. In critical area of heavy vehicular or pedestrian traffic, rigid guardrail that must not be less than
900mm in height must be erected around the excavation.
5. All work areas, walkways, platforms etc. elevated 1m or more, must be provided with effective
guardrails or two layers of rigid wire ropes of adequate strength.

7. When work is carried out at elevated levels and subjected to falling objects below, the area below
must be barricaded and warning sign displayed.
9. All floor openings shall be effectively covered by material of adequate strength and barricaded and
toe-board, with warning sign displayed.
10. Roof and elevated open floor edges of building must be protected by one of the following:
Perimeter two layer of rigid steel guardrails with toe-boards of at least 90mm in width.
Temporary non-rigid barricade set back from edge of hard-barricade of at least 1m.
