TO ALL WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME, GREETINGS:

WHEREAS, Indianapolis native David Letterman, a graduate of IPS School 55, Broad Ripple High School
and Ball State University, is retiring as host of the CBS Late Show with David Letterman effective May 20,
2015; and
WHEREAS, Davids entertainment career began in Indianapolis with stints as a Channel 13 WTHR weatherman and a WNTS AM radio talk show host, though it was his experiences as an Atlas Supermarket bagger
that prompted the Late Shows annual National Grocery Bagging Champion bag-off challenge; and
WHEREAS, Davids unique sense of humor is evident in his Stupid Human Tricks segment on the Late
Show, which once featured future Indiana Pacers Coach Frank Vogel brushing his teeth with a spinning
basketball on the end of his toothbrush; and
WHEREAS, Davids long history with the Indianapolis Motor Speedway has fueled his passion for
IndyCar racing, from watching the Indianapolis 500 as a child to interviewing Mario Andretti during the
1971 race to his current co-ownership of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing; and
WHEREAS, many local non-profits, including Indianapolis Public Schools and the Simon Youth Foundation, have benefitted from the generosity of the Letterman American Foundation for Courtesy and Grooming; and
WHEREAS, the City of Indianapolis number one reason on its Top Ten List for Why David Letterman
will be Missed on the Late Show is his lifelong connection to our city as a favorite son who we wish all the
best in retirement;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GREGORY A. BALLARD, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF INDIANAPOLIS,
DO HEREBY PROCLAIM MAY 20, 2015 AS:
