Altibase provides documents, utilities and services for migrating from other databases to ALTIBASE HDB. The migration process typically follows a series of predefined steps. This brochure explains the following:
Many Altibase references in a wide variety of industrial sectors are examples of successful migration
from Oracle to ALTIBASE HDB.

Because ALTIBASE HDB is a standards-compliant relational database that fully supports the SQL- 2 standard and
various interfaces including ODBC, JDBC, OLE DB and the . ET ramework, most of the application design, programming, data model design and system administration paradigms used with other database systems can be directly
applied to ALTIBASE HDB without change.

ALTIBASE HDB seamlessly incorporates an in-memory database with a disk-resident database. Therefore, those
switching to ALTIBASE HDB will realize a remarkable improvement in overall database performance.
Additionally, when compared to the TCO (Total Cost of Ownership) associated with simultaneously operating separate
in-memory and disk-resident databases, ALTIBASE HDB will prove advantageous in that management, configuration,
operation and development costs will be significantly reduced.

Database objects such as tables (including the data they contain), indexes and sequences are easily
converted for use with ALTIBASE HDB using Migration Center. Other database objects will need to be converted
manually. (Migration of indexes and sequences using Migration Center will be supported a later release)
Identifying tablespaces and their current size (including the undo and temporary tablespace)
The Application Migrator is a database conversion tool that helps users analyze and convert client applications for use with ALTIBASE HDB. The Application Migrator supports various development languages, such as
Pro*C and Java.
Most PL/SQL statements and applications can be converted for use with ALTIBASE HDB automatically using
the Application Migrator. However, some of them will need to be converted manually.

ALTIBASE HDB is the worlds first so-called hybrid database, meaning that it combines the fast performance
of an in-memory database with the large capacity of a disk-resident database.
Therefore, by allocating hot (frequently accessed) data to in-memory tables and cold (seldom accessed)
data to disk-resident tables, we can optimize the overall performance of ALTIBASE HDB. To maximize the
benefits of the ALTIBASE HDB hybrid features, data need to be classified as either hot or cold data by analyzing the business logic and historical data.
