Schools want to understand who the student is, what experiences shaped his/her past, and how
he/she could contribute to student life.
International students are often at a great advantage because they clearly have something to offer
that others don't: the international perspective. One of the biggest concerns that schools now
have is making sure that their students are cosmopolitan and are aware of foreign relations and
foreign cultures. Students from Vietnam should thus focus on how growing up in Vietnam has
given them perspective and how they would be willing/able to share their experiences with
American
students.
1. Each statement should start out with a "hook." The point of a "hook" is to draw the reader in
and to set it apart from all the other statements. Often, the hook is a story/anecdote or an
observation that frames the whole essay.
2. After the hook, write a few paragraphs about yourself: this is a bit more factual and should
focus on your experiences and life.
3. After you have spent 2 or 3 paragraphs on your life, extrapolate to your thoughts. How have
you grown as a result of your experiences? How has life in Vietnam enhanced your perspective?
How did you past influence your desire to attend school in the US now?
4. Following all of this, talk about (1) what you hope to gain from your educational experience
at the institution to which you're applying, and (2) what contributions you can make to the
school.
Note that for (1) you should have done research about the school so that you can write
intelligently about why *that* particular school would be good for you. In terms of (2), typical
contributions include sharing your life with other students socially or adding perspective in the
classroom.
5. End the essay with a strong statement of interest about going to school in the US generally,
and attending school at that institution in particular.
Note that personal statements are typically short - often, only 2 pages double spaced. Thus, you
will not be able to fit everything in that you want to write. This means that you will need to
make a list of the things you want to say and pick the top few points.
22
Beyond all of this, you MUST spell-check and make sure that there are no typos. Schools care
about how meticulous / detail-oriented you are. Edit your writing and double-check it for
spelling and grammatical mistakes. Remember, however, that schools certainly take into
consideration the fact that you're an international student. Thus, some mistakes are acceptable.
But by editing, you make sure that you have very few (if any) mistakes a reality that will
undoubtedly impress schools.
Good luck!

Dear Dr. Richardson,
I began my professional career in June of 1999 with Alliance Commerciale Technologique (ACT). ACT
is a consulting company specializing in CATIA (3-D modeling software), as well as data management.
My first assignment brought me back to Connecticut as a CAD/CAM consultant for Computer Science
Corporation, a contractor to Electric Boat Corporation. In the future, ACT may send me to work at
Boeing in Seattle, BMW in Berlin, Honda in Tokyo or Dassault Systemes in Paris, all of whom are
clients of ACT. I will have many diverse work experiences in my career. However, I would like to further
my opportunities for success by achieving an MBA from the University of Connecticut.
I graduated with a B.S in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Connecticut in 1997. During
the fall of 1995 I began working at the Business Law Department as an assistant for Professor Madelyn
Huffmire for two semesters. I evaluated tests, maintained student records and conducted library research
for her lectures. For the fall 1996 semester I was an assistant to Linda Klein, a professor of the Finance
Department. I worked on the Income Property Evaluation and was familiar with cash flow forecasting,
rate derivation, and discounted cash flow techniques. I strongly believe that management is the core of
my professional career in the future. Continuing this philosophy, I worked for the Management
Department and assisted Professor William Schulze for a semester. I conducted library research on the
Dynamics of Organization and Management of Small Businesses & Venture Enterprises. This taught me
to understand the principle of systems interacting with a changing environment and opportunities of selfemployment in traditional small businesses.
In the summer 1998 I interned with Nike Inc. of Vietnam. My task was to systematize Safety & Health
(SH) and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), then train the appropriate managers and supervisors with
these systematizations. After these managers and supervisors were trained, they, in turn, were responsible
for the training of their subordinates. The SH and PPE programs encompassed five factories, covering
40,000 Nike employees. In addition to the systematizations of the SH and PPE programs, I was
responsible for surveying employees' understanding of SH and PPE before and after the training
program. The training program was a success, as 25 percent of employees had a much deeper
understanding on SH and PPE, which helped contribute to their overall happiness and productivity.
With my background of education and work experience, I believe I will perform well in the MBA
program with a concentration on Management of Technology. I have admired the success of several
people, such as Mr. Denis Nayden, president of GE Capital, and Mr. Sudhakar Shenoy, president of IMC,
both of whom possess an MBA degree from the University of Connecticut and are working not only in
Connecticut, but nation-wide. The University is my Alma matter, and I would be proud to carry an MBA
that would not only reflect on my desire for success, but would also reflect on a great institution.

Tho Tran

Writing a Letter of Recommendation: http://www.boxfreeconcepts.com/reco/#Recommendation
%20Overview
professional/academic qualities
specific skills
personal qualities
past accomplishments
What are the principal two or three accomplishments this person has achieved under my
guidance?
weaknesses
What are some points this person must address to advance his/her career?
How well does this person learn from past mistakes?
24
future potential
Begin the letter by clearly stating your position, where you work, your relationship to the
applicant, and how long you have known and/or worked with the applicant.
Body
State the applicant's most noteworthy quality, and support that claim with a specific anecdote.
For instance, you might say that Samantha is, first and foremost, a born leader; then, support that
statement by telling about the time Samantha took the initiative to form a task force to deal with
a glitch in the company's computer accounting system.
Fourth Paragraph: Applicant Quality # 2
Again, state your claim with specific anecdotes and concrete examples.
Conclusion
Fifth Paragraph: State why you think the applicant's plans suit him/her.
Sixth Paragraph: State how you think the applicant will contribute to the program.
Last Paragraph: Strongly reaffirm your confidence in the applicant's abilities and conclude
by telling the readers they should feel free to contact you in case they need more
information. Don't forget to include your contact information beneath your signature and
name.
Don't handwrite the letter; type it. Handwriting a letter is a sign that you are not serious
about the task and will reflect poorly on the applicant.
25
Remember to use official letterhead, to sign the letter, and to include both complete contact
information. When you have folded the letter and put it in an envelope, sign across the seal.
The length of letters of recommendation varies greatly, but five paragraphs is usually the
minimum. On the same note, don't go overboard and churn out seven pages, even if you are
highly enthusiastic about the candidate. Choose your content wisely, and remember that a
concise letter is usually more effective than an overly verbose one.
