Pow 4

Problem Statement:
You have a 5 by 5 cube. Each side gets painted. We are asked how many cubes
have one, two, and three faces painted. We then need to find an equation for each
so that if you are given a certain numbered cube you can find the cubes painted.

Process:
When I first started to count the cubes I set up a diagram to help me. The diagram
was 1D but it really helped because I could then see how many cubes were on I
face, then did that for every problem. But when it can to finding the equation the
diagram wasnt going to work. So I then made a chart for different cubes and tried
to find a pattern so that I could come up with a equation. I then made the charts
and found out that a couple of things. The first is that no matter how many cubes
there are in a cube there will always be 8 three faces painted. Next I found out that
the two faces painted cubes were going up by 12 and so I found the equation n2*12. The last thing that I found was that for one side painted cubes that it had a
pattern that was six times the two. So the equation that I found came out to
n=6*n-2.
Solution: 5x5x5
1: 54
2: 36
3: 8

Equations:
1: n=6*n-2
2: n=n-2*12
3: Always 8

New Problem:
You have a rectangle that is 5x8. Each face gets painted and no paint bleeds
through. Find out how many cubes have 1,2,3 faces painted. Then come up with a
equation to find a XxX rectangle.

Evaluation:
This POW was relatively easy. But the one thing that it helped me do it to visualize
3D shapes in my head. That will help with other different math problems.
