In the laboratory setting, the P1 student pharmacist will:
o Interview and counsel a patient as a group, within 15 minutes, on an OTC product by role-playing with a facilitator o Given a patient case, determine if a patient is an appropriate self-care candidate. o Provide at least 4 counseling points for a recommended self-care strategy including both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. o Given a patient case, determine appropriate patient follow-up recommendations. o Compare OTC treatments for each dermatological condition (warts, corns/calluses, pediculosis, fungal infections) o Differentiate characteristics unique to each of the conventional and one of the complimentary treatments for head lice.
On a quiz or exam, the P1 student pharmacist will:
o Recognize characteristics of patients who seek self-treatment therapies o Given a patient case, decide whether the patient is presenting with a wart, corn, callus, fungal infection (ringworm and Athletes Foot), or pediculosis. o Describe the unique of presentation of warts, corns, calluses, fungal infections (ringworm and Athletes Foot), and pediculosis. o List 3 common exclusions to self-care for each of the following conditions: warts, corns, calluses, fungal infections (ringworm and Athletes Foot), and pediculosis. o Correlate specific OTC medications to their role in the treatment of warts, corns, calluses, fungal infections (ringworm and Athletes Foot), and/or pediculosis. o Given a patient case, identify the most appropriate therapy for warts, corns, calluses, fungal infections (ringworm and Athletes Foot), and pediculosis
On an OSCE, the P1 student pharmacist will, within 10 minutes:
o For a patient presenting with warts, corns, calluses, fungal infections (ringworm or Athletes Foot), or pediculosis Conduct a patient interview asking at least 8 questions utilizing SCHOLAR-MAC Always ask about a patients medications, allergies, and medical conditions when providing an OTC recommendation Determine if the patient is an appropriate self-care candidate Recommend appropriate medications and non-drug treatment Counsel the patient on each of the recommended management strategies for the self-care condition according to the product selection & counseling skill guide
Instruct the patient on an appropriate follow-up time
o Use appropriate communication skills at all times when interacting with the patient according to the provided rubric
