A&P Critical Thinking Questions
1. The setting of this short story was in a small town in a grocery store called
A&P. I think that Updikes did a good job coordinating the story with the
setting.
2. By the way Sammy describes the girls at the store we can tell that he has
great observation skills. He also, sounds a little sarcastic and he acts very
impulsive.
3. The first paragraph is very descriptive and its introduce in a very normal and
calm tone.
4. I think that the central conflict of this story is Sammy inner problem. He is
frustrated with the same old routine and he decides to tell his manager that
he quits. In my opinion, this is a trivial conflict.
5. I dont feel any sympathy towards Lengel, I think he just wanted to show he
was the manager and told them to leave. He probably has very strong
decemt values because she told the girls they were dress innaproprately for a
grocery store.
6. I think that Stoksies represent the male version of an unfaithful man. Even
though he is older and married, he still observes this girls like a little
immatured boy.
7. I think Sammy account for the girls did turn out tobe a little sexist. The ways
he observes abd refer ti the girls was very odd. Him referring to one of the
girls Queen was kind of sexist.
8. I think the climax of the story is when Sammy decides to quit his job without
thinking the consequences of his actions. It did change my perspective about

Sammy he looked like a responsible kid but towards the end of the story he
acted very immatured and impulsive.
9. I dont think the story would have changed a lot even if it was told from
someone else point of view. The thing is that its a very simple and clear
story.
