Displacement

Reaction

Heat of
Displacement
Heat is released when 1 mol of

metal is displaced from its salt

solution by a more electropositive
metal.

Heat of
Displacement
Example:
Iron is displaced from its salt
solution Iron (II) sulphate solution
by zinc
Zn + FeSO4

H = - 80.6 kJ

ZnSO4 + Fe

Heat of
Displacement
Ionic
equation
Zn + Fe2+

Zn2+ + Fe

H = - 80.6 kJ
Heat released when 1 mol of Iron is
displaced is 80.6 kJ.

How to Calculate
Heat of
FindDisplacement
out the mol of metal that is
displaced.
Calculate heat change = mc
Calculate heat of displacement/
heat of reaction
H = mc / mol

Question 1
In an experiment, 2.4 g of Mg

powder is added to 100 cm3 copper

(II) sulphate solution.
The temperature of the mixture
increases by 1.0oC. What is the heat
of reaction in the experiment?
[Specific heat capacity of a solution
= 4.2 J g -1 oC -1 ; RAM of Mg = 24]

Solution 1
1. mol = 2.4 g / 24 = 0.1 mol
2. Heat change = mc

= (100)(4.2)(1.0)
= 420 J
3. Heat of displacement
= - Heat change / mol
= - 420 J / 0.1 mol
= - 4200 J mol -1 / - 4.2 kJ mol -1

Question 2
When excess Zn powder is added to

25 cm3 of 0.2 mol dm-3 copper (II)

sulphate solution.
The temperature of the mixture
increases by 30oC to 40oC. What is
the heat of displacement of
copper?
[Specific heat capacity of a solution
= 4.2 J g -1 oC -1 ; RAM of Cu = 64]

Solution 2
1. mol = (25)(0.2)/1000

= 0.005 mol
2. Heat change = mc
= (25)(4.2)(10)
= 1050 J
3. Heat of displacement
= - Heat change / mol
= - 1050 J / 0.005 mol
= - 210 000 J mol -1 / - 210 kJ mol -1
