Introduction
Inthisessay,Iwillexaminetheissuesassociatedwiththewidespreaduseofasbestos
asareliablebuildingmaterialwithmultipleapplications,aswellasthehealthrisks
thatitproposes.Asbestosisageneralnamegiventoagroupofsiliconcompounds
withverydistinctcharacteristics(1).Themostcommonformofthese,ischrysolite
asbestos,(alsoknownaswhiteasbestos)whichaliketheotherforms,isprimarily
usedforitsmultipleproperties(physicalstrength,thermalandchemicalresistance)
whichmakesitabothusefulandrelativelymaterial.
However,despiteitsnumerousapplication,asbestosproductshavebeenbrandedas
hazardous(2)duetoitscarcinogenicnature,astheyareknowntocauserareformof
cancercalledmesothelioma.Alarmingly,inspitetherisks,worldwideuseofasbestos
productsisstillprominent,asonly52countrieshaveissuedanextensivebanonall
asbestosproducts(La,Douetal.).(3)
