Its totally ludicrous, isnt it really, i mean, the salaries these Company directors

and corporate lawyers and financial people in the city get paid, dont you
think? I mean its completely do, for one thing.
Yeah. Not to mention the astronomical sum that footballers and film stars and
so on get, too. I suppose its all about marker forees but it does seem very
unfair.
Well, it is, you know, when you consider that someone like a nurse or an
ambulance driver gets paid a pittance-relatively-you know, forwhat they do and
. I mean how about all these jobs nobody wants to do, but have to be done?
Can you imagine having to clean the strees, or collectthe rubbish or
Thats exactly what I was trying to get at. I mean, theyre horrible jobs, so what
I thing is that anyone who has really, you know, a hard job should expect to get
paid well for it you look dubious, liz
Well, its a difficult one, because well, historically people expect to get paid less
if theyve got no qualifications.
But how come, though? Is it their faultif theyre np good at exams, or financially
the couldnt afford higher education, or if, you know.
Yeah, no of course not, but I dont understand how would it work in practice.
Does what job you have mother that much anyway? I mean, theres a whole
world out there beyond work. Its only a means to an and, so you can eat and
stuff.
For you, maybe, but for some people its thebe all and to cam a lot and get on.
Yeah, but surely its an interesting job thats the main thing, not.
Well yeah. Im with you an that, but all Im saying is many other people-for
them, their job is the main thing in their life, its how they define themselves.
Well , theyre saddos, if you ask me, they should get a life-find some interests.
Well, thats why people get so stressed out and have to take so much time off
work-because they word too hard and get thing ort of proportion.
But, for some people they love their work and anyway, when youre young if
you want to get on, you know, you have to put.
Climb the career ladder, whoopee!
Hung on. Carry on, liz. You were saying?
Well, you have to work long hours and put a lot in, or people think that youwell, you know, they, they wont give you promotion
Well so what?!
You say that now, but wait until you want a nice house or a flash ca or.
Er excuse me? it was you saying that what mattered was interest.

Anyway-assuming you do want promotion, you usually have to.

What I do feel strongly about is that employer make provision for working
mothers.
By provision you mean?
Well for example so they son have flexibility, so if they have to, have to drop
kids off at school o if on of them is ill they com work at home or if they.
And allow more women to work pat-time or, or job stare.
Or men of course!
Yeah, right how many men do you know who work part-time so that they look
after the kids
Ah, youre got me there! Well. Perhaps they would if it was more accepted
Thats just what I was going to say. Its a kid of chicken an egg situation. Until
employers offter people more flexible hours, parents-well, mother really-ore
stuck because they feel guilty working full-time but need to work for whatever
reason and often, they have on choice anyway-they need the money
They problem is people no kids might turn round and say- well, why should we
cover for you? Its your choice to have children, and they minght resent it if
working mothers
Or fathers
Or fathers have special treatment
Oh, t dont knpw about that, I mean after all, as a society were all responsible
for the future
