Time for a change

MAY`S WEEK DAY BY DAY

.. The viceroy Baltasar Hidalgo de Cisneros asks people to remain faithful
to Spain.
.................................. The criollos ask the authorities to discuss the situation in an open Cabildo
.................................. The viceroy receives some Cabildo members, commanders in chief and
criollos, and they discuss the possibility of calling an open Cabildo.
.................................. The Cabildo invites 450 influential citizens to gather on the following day.
.................................. Around 300 cabildantes are present on this day. After long arguments,
they decide that the viceroy has to resign.
.................................. The Cabildo decides to form a junta headed by the viceroy.
.................................. The people show their indignation when they find out that Cisneros is still
in command. All the members of the junta resign.
.................................. Many people gathers at Plaza Mayor. The members of the Cabildo
acknowledge the authority of the revolutionary junta. In this way, the first autonomous
government is formed.
