Comment This primary source gives us much in the way of historical
information about the founding of the paper, the development of its
political ideals, ownership and its founding figures. As a Guardian
source this is useful primary information, however this doesn't mean it
does not contains a bias towards its selection of history to protect its
own image.

Economic and cultural reasons for stating Daily Mail
Contains primary sources of slogans used to sell the paper
Comment This website provides much information about the Daily Mail's
foundation, its ownership and the reasons for its publication. As a
secondary source we can only take this information at face value however
it does contain sources to support the idea that the paper was founded as
a way to introduce new form of 'American Journalism' to Britain.

Forward by Liz Frogan (Chair of Scott Trust) on how values are still
applicable to Guardian journalism today.
JP Scott sets in place the standard he envisions for the paper: To
secure the financial and editorial independence of the Guardian in
perpetuity: as a quality national newspaper without party affiliation;
remaining faithful to liberal tradition; as a profit-seeking enterprise
managed in an efficient and cost-effective manner.
Journalists responsibilty to society.

The role of Journalism in holding to acount those in power.

The role The Guardian has taken from its foundation to this 1921
publication in these terms.

Comments This famous speech is much quoted not just by Guardian

journalists but by writers from all media outlets. It sets a high standard for
a form of journalism much about responsibility and tells us much about
the values the guardian was founded and operated on under JP Scott.
Although it may seem outdated much of the values Scott talks on are
upheald by the paper today.

Opinion piece defending the political allegences of the Daily Mail to facisim in
the 30s.
Well balanced piece shows us this wad related to ownership and not editorial
stance.
Exlains the Daily Express having before and after this period had opposing
politicsto the Mail were both owned by facist sympathiser Lord Rothermere.
Explains Lord Rothermere's idealastion of both papers because of his
addmiration of facist leaders Hitler and Mussolin.
Lord Rothermere backing of British facism in the black shirts and Oswold
Mosley; Daily Mail Headline "Hurrah for the Blackshirts."
Explains brief facist ideas made no impression of latter incarnations of the
Mai.
Contains photo of Rothermere and Hitle.

Comments- I decided to use this

article from the Guardians Roy
Greenslade because of its great use
of primary information in displaying
the argument at hand. This well
balenced report debunks the fact
that this brief stint into far right
politics left a lassting impression on
the Mail's political house style.
Although seconday it conains much
usful primary information.

The drop of 'Manchester' in the title of the then 'Manchester Guardian' to

reflect its 'national status' 1959.
The beging of printing in London as well as Manchester 1961.
The move to London offices in 1976 helped to 'consolidte the papers national
status.'
The threat of the Independant forced a redesign of the paper to the 'groundbreaking Berliner format.'
The success of the 1999 launced Guardian website was the first and
continually best in its field of digital Journalism.

Comments - This primary source gives us valuble information on the development

of the guardian through the late 20th Century. Explaining its shift in geography and
social demographic in terms of its perception of readership. No primary sources from
the time are given he though and again we must take the information at face value.

Heralds the Mails high standard of tabloid Journalism.
Attributes 'forward thinking nature 'of paper to breaking the muld with 'first

Hilights the aim for push in technological advances; ' In the very first issue it
predicted, with striking foresight, the place that the motor car then much
derided would occupy within a few years.'
Sources of competitions it would offer to its readers in order to push Britain's

the tongue of bureaucracy."'
Relaunch in 1971 to compact paper under editorial lead of Sir David English
Talks of the list of society changing campains the Daily Mail led to imrove life
for British people
Comments This is most likey the most complete article about the Mail's history.
Because of its often conteded history, it is difficult to find complete records of certain
parts of its past; this publication compiles first hand quotes, headlines and an
accurate running commentary to give us just that. This piece does not however
focus on some the darker times in its past such as its soft approch to facism in the
30s and therfore does not give a complete and balenced record of the papers past.

Comments This primary source gives us first hand the economic breakdown of the
Mail's readership in the UK. This 'media-pack' designed for advertisers gives us
confusing graphical information on the wealth and social standing of its readers.

Gives us print readership 843,00.
And also the break down of its solical demographic.
Comments This breakdown of readership is much more detailed and informative
than the Daily Mails breakdown. Again this primary source information gives us usful
statistics when considoring social demographic of readers. An example of how The
Guardian presents its information graphicly better than the Mail in its breakdown of
demographics on each of its platforms. The papers website, paper and app statistics
are all given separtly.

Guardian Article Why the Guardian's decision not to join up to IPSO

makes sense Primary Source Sept 14

Roy Greenslade defends the Guardians decsision to turn down IPSO as their
ethical body.
Belives that Guardian ethics are to a higher standard.
Like the Independant and The Financial Times the Guradian feels that IPSO is
not that differn't to the PCC.
Points out lack of transparency in the bodies release.
Makes point of naming board members on IPSO that were als part of its
previous incarnation.
Comments This primary piece is as close as we will get to finding the reasons for
the Guardian turning down IPSO. It clearly points out why it is not comfortable with
the new body and explains itself as a media outet. Greatly useful, it will no doubt be
used to explain ethical framworks of the paper in the report.

This brief pice explains that the Mail has joined IPSO
Most likley a page to avoid deformation
Contains contact information incase of inaccuracies
Comments The lack of information and meaningful comment on this page gives us
little to use other than to comment that fact itself. Little or no information makes this
source not useful. The Mail unlike the Guardian have not explained their decision on
the argument of free press and the formation of IPSO.
Guardian Article Primary Source 'NHS nurse shortage forces health
service to recruit overseas'
Dennis Cambell 17 Dec 14

The story that recruitment of forign nurses had quadrupled in last year.
Reactive piece lays facts out for us, statistics and the location of recruitment:
Spain, Portugal and the Philiappines.
'Leading expert' blames NHS under staffing.
Pfor Jane Ball also comments on under staffing, blames forign sourcing as
'short term stop-gap and so inefficient.'
More statistics on hiring from differn't Trusts.
Correction on the statment '4 out of 5 Nurses hired abrod' as this particular
statment originally includedis untrue.
Comments This primary source article is usful in comparing these two papers. The
subject matter is one that the Guardian will not use to scaremongor or delibretly
worry the puiblic. This is greatly useful in reflecting left liberal side of this argument.
Daily Mail Article Primary Source 'Influx of forign nurses on NHS wards
leads to fears many lack English language skills needed for this job.'
Sophie Borland - 17 Dec 14
Viewed 17 Dec 14
Evocative headline shows us the papers reflection on the story.
Led with figures and speech from Peter Carter of Royal College of Nursing
'astonishing over reliance,'panic buying of nurses.'
Quotes of Patient Association's Katherine Murphy 'concerned over poor
English skills' supporting stance set out in headline
Claims Daily Mail investigation'found that forign nurses struggled filling out
basic forms' also claiming that 'recruiters offerd help with those nurses
struggling' and going as far as saying recuters used google tranlate to
communicate with nurses
Also quotes Jane Ball however ommits here attributing problem to under
staffing beacuse of cuts.
Quotes Labour health spokesman on negative reaction to finding.
Improved statistics show each Trust recrutment figures.
Similarly ro the Guardian the Mail has a correction note for the statment '4 out
of 5 Nurses forign', however it also contains a statment from the recruitment

officers from the Mails investigation "The interview panel in Portugal

included senior nurses from the Trust and the process included
written tests followed by rigorous interviews in English, testing
listening skills and reasoning applied to nursing practice, including
drug calculations. The applicants are also asked to write a care plan.
Trust staff did not help applicants complete their forms and it is not
willing to employ nurses who have a limited command of English. A
number of nurses were not offered contracts for this reason."
Comments - This applicable primary information is very usful in
comparing the two papers on a story they are likely to show from a
differn't angle. I will no doubt be using this story and those two sources to illustrate
differnces in mediation.
