Johnson Analysis Revision Notes
In this short analysis essay I go through how Samuel Johnson used rhetorical strategies to
win his audience about the topic of debtor's prison. Throughout the essay I go through how he
presented ways in which the release of the men can actually help the nation. Johnson uses
examples from other countries and shows there value through their lives outside prison. I lay out
the general reasons why he is appealing to these lawmakers and how his is appealing through
their emotions to side with him. I also state that throughout the passage he tries to use their sense
of logical decision making by laying out the value and cost of making these changes. One area
that I struggled in was by identifying precise strategies that Johnson used to catch his audience. I
could have been more clear on the strategies effect on others in that certain situation. This could
have helped emphasize the impact of these writing that Johnson has made on others.
