With summer right around the corner, it is a great time for our student-athlete to
earn some extra cash through a summer job. They should remember that they will
need to register their job with the Compliance Office and that the NCAA has rules

We want to inform you that an alert has been issued regarding identification of Norovirus
in the community. This is a viral illness that can cause GI problems.
What you need to know:
Practice proper hand hygiene (soap and water especially after using the toilet,
before eating/handling food)
Wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly
Do not share food (ex: potlucks, communal food)
Encourage frequent wiping down of shared areas (tables, counters, computer
keyboards) with bleach wipes
In case of illness:
Keep hydrated (drink extra fluids to replace fluids lost from throwing up or
diarrhea)
Sports drinks (and other drinks without caffeine) can help with mild dehydration
If you (or someone with the Norovirus) becomes severely dehydrated, see a
physician
Phone your athletic trainer if you feel you have any of these symptoms to set up a
time to see a physician if needed and also to lets us know about your illness.
Avoid crowded places (locker room, athletic training room) until you have
spoken with your athletic trainer
If you have any questions, please speak to your team athletic trainer or
physician!
It is better to
look ahead
and prepare
than to look
back and
regret.

Vitamin D and Health and Performance

April is
National:
Earth
Awareness,
School
Library, and
Poetry Month!
Vitamin D is a key nutrient for supporting optimal health and performance as it plays a role
in building strong bones and enhancing neuromuscular and immune function. Without
sufficient intake of vitamin D, calcium cannot be optimally deposited in bone. Vitamin D
enhances the connection between nerves and muscles to allow for coordinated movement
of the bosy. Adequate vitamin D plays a role in maintaining muscle strength and decreasing
muscle pain, which is important for athletes participating in intense work outs. Vitamin D
aids in optimizing immune function and subsequently decreases risk for diseases and
conditions such as osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, cancer (breast, prostate, colon),
depression, autoimmunity, and insomnia.
Food Sources: fatty fish (salmon, tuna, mackerel, sardines), beef, veal, eggs, liver, and
fortified dairy, cereal, and bread products. Small amounts can also be found in mushrooms.
Vitamin D from the sun. In the US individuals absorb about 4 times as much vitamin D
from the sun in the summer as compared to the winter months. A fair skinned individual,
going outside for 10 minutes in the midday sun (10am-3pm)in shorts and a tank top with
no sunscreenwill produce about 10,000 IUs of vitamin D. During the summer, a daily dose
of sunshine should be sufficient for vitamin D synthesis. During the winter months,
supplementation may be appropriate. The darker an individuals skin, the less vitamin D
they produce from the sunshine, so vitamin D supplementation may be needed through the
summer months as well.
Safe Supplement Dose: The current minimum safe dosage of vitamin D is 600 international
units (IUs) per day with the upper limit being 4000IUs. Given the limited sun exposure in
the Pacific Northwest, supplementing 1000-2000 IUs per day is recommended. Some
individuals may need more or less depending on their current nutrition and health status.
Having your current Vitamin D levels assessed and working with a registered dietitian or
physician can ensure you are supplementing at appropriate levels.
