Student Ewha Womans University Recently, many Korean dance scholars and students are interested in dance anthropology as a new area for dance studies. Some Korean dance scholars and graduate students are researching Korean dance by limited concept and methodology of the western dance anthropology and rashly presented their works so-called ‘dance anthropological researches’. However, these kind of works can interfere and distorted the development of dance anthropology in Korea. This phenomena is due to a lack of the discussion about the concept and methodology of dance anthropology within Korean dance researchers circle. Therefore, | will discuss about the dance anthropological study for helping to understand the concept and methodology of dance anthropology. ‘The study is consisted of three parts. First, theoretical background of dance anthropology, which is generally discussed in westem scholarship, will be introduced by three aspects: concept, methodology, and history. Secondly, a brief description of Korean dance anthropology will be presented in two aspects: history and current dance researchers. Finally, problems of Korean dance anthropology will be discussed in terms of basis and misunderstanding about dance anthropological study in Korea. In conclusion, as Korean dance anthropology is a beginning, the first generation of Korean dance anthropologists have to organize and set up their study in the right way by wide and active discussion on concept and methodology. Especially, they should give a room for various anthropological methodologies for developing Korean dance.
