UFO-RELATED HUMAN PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS a Ay. Se BY JOHN E SCHUESSLER A CATALOG OF UFO-RELATED HUMAN PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS by John F. Schuessier 1996 P.O. Box 58485 Houston, Texas 77258-8485 ©John F. Schuessler 1996 & CATALOG OF UFO-RELATED HUMAN PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS John F. Schuessier ABSTRACT A significant number of UFO reports contain information suggesting that human physiological and psychological damage, animal reactions, and physical trace effects are caused by the UFO encounter. If this assertion is true, then we have an opportunity to provide the “proof” of reality sought by most researchers if we properly amass and utilize the results of the investigations. Important to researchers is the availability of historical data in a conveniently usable form. This document provides the first edition of a subset of the overall database - a catalog of UFO-related human physiological effects. INTRODUCTION Speaking at the MUFON UFO Symposium held in Kansas City, Missouri in 1973, Dr. J. Allen Hynek said: “A paradoxical situation exists in the whole UFO Problem area: we have too many sightings, not too few; yet we are far from a solution. We are, frankly, embarrassed by our riches.” Later in the same paper, Dr. Hynek said: “We do have a great richness in material to study. Let us turn our present embarrassment of these riches to good use. We can do this by not wallowing around in a welter of cases of all sorts, unable to do justice to any, but by being very selective in choosing just what cases or aspects of the problem to study. It does no good merely to read about and talk about the whole spectrum of UFO cases.” He went on to recommend that UFO researchers specialize in some aspect of the field or some unique cases to develop an impressive amount of material and to have that material published for others to use. Some excellent examples of the specialized approach to the UFO problem now exist. Stanton Friedman, Don Berliner, Kevin Randle, and Donald Schmitt have researched and written extensively about the 1947 UFO crash at Roswell, New Mexico. Dr. Jack Kasher tackled the touchy problem of analyzing the videotape taken by the crew of the Space Shuttle Discovery on flight STS-48 in September 1991 Linda Howe and Tom Adams are known worldwide for their work on cattle mutilations. Dr. David Jacobs, Dr. John Mack, Budd Hopkins, Yvonne Smith and others are deeply involved in abduction research. Len Stringfield dedicated much of his life to crash- retrieval research. These researchers and hundreds of others have dedicated themselves to specific areas of UFO research. All of this case specialization is paying off by finally providing some concrete results. Another valuable area of specialization lies in the development of specialized databases, documenting certain characteristics of the UFO phenomenon for use by other researchers in their work. Some examples follow. Researcher Ted Phillips assembled a database of more than 4,000 landing trace cases, incidents where plants and soil traces attested to the fact that unusual, but physically real machines of some sort damaged the landing site. Some eyewitnesses to these events described the machines as other worldly - nothing like those built on Earth. Britain's Gordon Creighton cataloged 170 cases relating to the effects of UFOs on animals, birds and smaller creatures. While animals do not have the capacity to imagine UFOs or to misidentify UFOs, they do have the natural mechanisms necessary to sense the physical effects caused by UFOs. Or. Richard Haines has documented more than 3,000 cases made by aircraft pilots worldwide and dedicated a book to pilot sightings over Korea during the Korean war. Or. Mark Rodeghier of the Center for UFO Studies compiled a catalog of 441 UFO reports involving vehicle interference. His work is an examination, chiefly through statistical means, of the subclass of UFO events where in the car, truck, or other motor vehicle in which the witness was either riding or in near proximity to, was 2 seemingly affected by the presence of a UFO. A similar study of 58 Australian vehicle interference cases was conducted by Keith Bastertield and Paul Jackson. In 1969 Gordon Lore and Major Donald Keyhoe produced a special report for NICAP on the strange effects from UFOs, documenting 95 incidents of animal reactions, vehicle interferences, or medical effects on humans. It was a valuable piece of work in defining the nature of the UFO problem. As a result of my investigation of the Cash-Landrum incident of December 29, 1980, | gathered information on a large number of UFO-related human physiological effects cases. Rather than lose the results of that inquiry, | have documented a summary of those cases in this catalog. A more comprehensive version is now in the planning stages. T IF DAT: Until recently, the collection of information related to human physiological effects in UFO cases was of secondary interest to investigators. The primary focus of investigations was on information about when and where the event occurred and a description of the UFO itself. This was generally true except in cases where extreme medical effects were evident. For many years the medical practitioners having a UFO interest desired to work only as an “invisible college;” therefore, they were not accessible to UFO investigators in general. As a result, the only time a significant amount of medical data was collected was when the injury left the witness incapacitated, demanding medical treatment and the investigator was aware of it. Usually the witnesses requiring medical treatment were treated in a text-book fashion for their malady (i.e. eye injuries, burned skin, skin lesions, etc.) by their family doctor or local hospital staff. These practitioneers usually were unaware that the patient was harmed during a UFO encounter and would not have believed it they had been told. It was common for victims of UFO encounters to suffer alone. The press seldom took these cases seriously and the public giggle-factor made the risk of speaking out more difficult than most people could stomach. To make matters worse, a protocol for UFO investigators to follow was not well defined or generally available. A lack of cooperation between the various UFO organizations left the data stranded in private files everywhere, inaccessible to other researchers. As a result, most cases involving physiological effects were insufficiently investigated and poorly monitored following the basic investigation. THE MUFON MEDICAL COMMITTEE The rapidly growing list of MUFON volunteers includes several hundred consultants and research specialists holding doctorates and masters degrees in their educational fields of expertise which are applicable to UFO research. Included in this list are individuals qualified to handle the medical issues; which includes the fields of Anesthesiology, Dentistry, Dental Surgery, Endocrinology, Gynecology, Hematology, Medical Microbiology, Medicine, Orthodontics, Pathology. Pediatrics, Pharmacy. Physiology, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, Radiation, and Veterinary Medicine. in 1991, MUFON formed a Medical Committee and | served as the MUFON administrator for the group. The purpose of the commmittee was to draw researchers in all of the above fields into an ad hoc group to establish an operating protocol, collect and evaluate case data, deal with the medical evidence, and provide an information exchange for the organization. Diagnosis and treatment are not a part of this Committee's charter. DEFINING THE PROTOCO! The MUFON Medical Committee defined a simplified set of instructions for field investigators to use when they are involved in a UFO investigation involving effects on 4 or injuries to the witness. These instructions are contained in Chapter XVII of the MUEFON Field investigator's Manual, Fourth Edition, published February 1995, where they serve as a guide to help investigators secure vital medical information promptly in cases where injuries of any kind may have been caused by a UFO close encounter, including abductions. In every case, the medical help provided to the victim, patient, or client should be foremost in priority in the investigator's mind. inig ical tant Assistan The medical evidence is an extremely important part of the UFO investigation. For this reason it is necessary to assure this valuable information is not lost or tainted. Immediately upon finding evidence of medical injury, no matter how insignificant it may seem, the field investigator should contact the MUFON headquarters in Seguin, Texas for assistance by the nearest MUFON Medical Consultant. ical Evi Proper handling of the witness (victim) is of utmost importance. The field investigator must note the exact condition of the witness, documenting the first and subsequent meetings with audio recording, photographs, and video recording if possible. If there is any doubt about the extent of the injuries, the witness should be advised to seek medical help immediately. Once the MUFON Medical Consultant is involved, he/she can discuss the case with the on-site medical specialist. Mi 1 Injuris fin Medical injuries may or may not be readily noticeable. In addition, the injuries may range from minor, which are difficult to detect, to extreme and easy to detect. When defining what constitutes a medical injury, it is important to consider anything that affects the physiological or psychological well-being of the witness. A listing of the more obvious effects of interest to UFO Medical researchers includes: feeling of heat, field effects (hair stands on end), disorientation, time loss, pain, headache, paralysis, marks on skin, burns (first, second and third degree), Jumps, bumps, growths, sores, loss of appetite, diarrhea, lethargy, eye problems. hair loss/gain, tooth damage/decay, psychological problems, and paranormal effects. 5 There are often hidden effects as well. The witness may not even consider that the hidden effects are related to the incident. Therefore, without leading the witness, the investigator should determine whether or not hidden evidence such as unusual feelings, strange dreams, development of possibly related problems such as cancer or heart trouble develop in the days, weeks, or months following the incident. At times the hidden evidence is so devastating that the witness focuses on the medical problem without ever thinking of the UFO incident again. Medical effects may result from abduction events as well as close encounter events. The investigator should be alert to medical evidence caused by the abductors, including but not limited to, medical examinations, insertion of needles or other devices into the body, implants, and reactions to the technological devices used by the abductors. In the case of abductions, MUFON headquarters will also alert MUFON Abduction Consultants. Reporting the Evidence Every step in the medical investigation should be thoroughly documented. No information is considered inconsequential. The exact description of the injury or condition should be recorded without interruption or interpretation. Often the witness is contused or frightened, making it difficult to understand exactly what has happened. This condition is often worsened by their having to talk to a UFO investigator. Nevertheless, it is important to capture the exact feelings and words of the witness The investigator may want to add a separate section of the report giving his/her feelings about the extent of the medical problem. Unless the investigator has medical training, however, it is possible that these observations may be biased or totally incorrect. Visible injuries such as burns, rashes, cuts, bruises, needle marks, discolorations, hair loss, or eye problems should be documented on videotape and film. Still photographs should be taken using a close up lens as well as panoramic views. If obvious injuries are present, the investigator should recommend prompt medical attention. If the witness has already seen a physician, obtain the name, address and telephone number of the physician. Report that information to the MUFON Medical Consultant. The investigator should not attempt to gain access to private medical records until assisted by a medical expert. The MUFON Medical Consultant assigned to the case will provide information on how to obtain the appropriate medical records and the proper use of release forms. A minimal set of records would include admitting records, all treatments and tests with results, nursing notes, and specialists records. Categories of Injuries Injuries as defined by the MUFON Field Investigator’s Manual are placed in one of four categories: CATEGORY 1: Those injuries of a temporary nature, dealing with paralysis, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, headache, tingling sensations, electrical shocks, feeling of heat, temporary blindness, mild burns, perception of odors, and perception of sounds. CATEGORY 2: Those dealing with the more chronic effects usually associated with skin lesions, which may represent pathology through unknown mechanisms. Lesions may appear as severe burns, scarring, open sores, etc. Effects of radiation exposure may result in the development of cancers, anemia or the like. CATEGORY 3: Those involving female abductees and the missing fetus syndrome and those involving implants. CATEGORY 4: Those involving psychological or paranormal evidence as noted by the witness. Evaluation of Injuries The extent of the injuries will determine the extent of the testing necessary in any given case. However, in cases of extreme medical injury, the MUFON Medical Consultant would like to see the results of the following tests. Where it has been determined that the witness was exposed to some type of radiation, it may be necessary to repeat a number of the tests at specific intervals. 0 WEIGHT: The witness should be weighed at the beginning of the medical investigation and at specific intervals until full recovery. Comparisons with documented weight evaluations prior to the UFO event should be made also. o VITAL SIGNS: Blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration and temperature. In many cases an Electrocardiogram would be helpful. © BLOOD-FORMING FUNCTION: Specimen: Whole blood. Tests: Complete blood count (CBC) with differential and platelet evaluation including white cell count (WBC), red cell count (RBC), hemoglobin (HBC), packed cell volume or hematocrit (HCT), and other desired erythrocyte indices. Reticulocyte count may be appropriate if there is a likelihood of exposure to hemolytic agents. The blood smear should be saved for possible future study. A sample of serum should be frozen for future study and comparison. This can be especially important when trying to determine exposure to infectious agents that may be ascertained sometimes only by measuring changes in antibody titers compared to an earlier specimen. o KIDNEY FUNCTION: Specimen: Blood serum. Tests: Blood urea nitrogen (BUN), creatinine, and uric acid. o LIVER FUNCTION: a. General Function - Specimen: Blood serum. Tests: Albumin, bilirubin, globulin, and total protein. b. Obstruction - Specimen: Blood enzyme. Test: Alkaline phosphatase. c. Cell Injury - Specimen: Blood enzyme. Tests: Gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGDP), lactic dehydrogenase (LDH), serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT). o MULTIPLE SYSTEMS AND ORGANS: Specimen: Urine. Tests: Analysis including color, appearance, specific gravity, pH, qualitative glucose, protein, bile. keytone bodies, and microscopic examination of centrifuged sediment. Specimen : Stool Test: Occult blood. o SKIN LESIONS: Document erythema, swelling, redness, and blister formation Test: Skin biopsy. Search for and collect specimens of any possible contaminants. Specimen: Skin scraping. Scrape into collecting bottle. o HAIRLOSS: Test for heavy metals: Lead, arsenic and mercury. Look for dissolution of intercellular bridges. o FINGERNAIL SHEDDING: Document loss of fingernails (Onychomadesis). o CHEST X-RAY: A standard chest x-ray should be taken. © OB-GYN: Ob-Gyn history, including: a. Number of full-term deliveries b. Number of pre-term deliveries c. Number of spontaneous or elective abortions c. Number of living children. Also important: Date of last menstrual period, any method of birth control being used, and a serum pregnancy test. Physical symptoms of pelvic bloating or cramping could be present if some type of laparascopic procedure was performed. THE CATALOG OF MEDICAL INJURY CASES Information included in this catalog of medical injury cases comes trom a wide range of sources, including newspapers, magazines, UFO organization journals and bulletins and UFO studies done by other researchers such as Ted Phillips and his landing trace case catalog and Mark Rodeghier and his vehicle interference case catalog. The purpose of the catalog is threefold: (1) It provides a chronological listing of UFO events involving physiological effects on humans, (2) It provides source information for other researchers desiring to do work in this important field, and (3) it is the first step in systematizing the medical injury data base. The 1995 version of the catalog contains nearly 400 cases which | have gathered over the past several years through personal study. Credit for the investigative work on these cases goes to the hundreds of other researchers and writers who took the time to document bits of the medical evidence, even though it was of secondary interest to them. Injuries noted in at least 80 percent of the cases are Category 1 injuries as defined in the MUFON Field Investigator's Manual. Because the injury information was generally taken from the initial report of the UFO encounter and not from a long term study of the witnesses, there might, in fact, be a lot more Category 2 cases than the catalog shows. This is because chronic effects do not show 9 up in a short term study. My intent is to continue to seek additional cases from the untapped files of the various UFO organizations and add them to the catalog in future revisions. Hopefully, however, this initial catalog will be of value to researchers. The catalog is organized for easy reading. The first line defines the date of the incident and the location. The second line has the local time of day and the source of the information. This is followed by a brief description of the case and a listing of the effects noted. The process is repeated with each case given in date order. VATA. FFICULTIE: UFO investigators have been struggling for nearly fifty years with the difficulties associated with the collection of UFO-related human physiological effects data. Unfortunately, most investigators spent forty of the past fifty years trying to prove that UFOs exist, when in fact that was proven in 1947 by the hundreds of UFO incidents that occurred that year. On the other hand, today we are seeing a greater acceptance of the UFO data as presented and more specialized research being done as well. To illustrate some of the medical data collection problems facing UFO investigators, | would like to use the final case presented above as an example. The victims in that incident have gone through years of misery as the result of their brief encounter with a UFO. Their request to the investigators was to use the results of their case to make it easier for UFO investigators and medical practioneers to deal with future cases involving harm to humans. And that is what we have tried to do. Victims in the December 29, 1980 were Betty Cash (51), Vickie Landrum (57) and grandson Colby Landrum (7). They were returning to Dayton, Texas in Betty's new Oldsmobile Cutlass after having a meal at a restaurant along the Interstate highway when they noticed a bright light in the sky ahead. In a matter of minutes, the light had grown in size and appeared as a huge diamond-shaped craft coming down in front of their car. Light from the device was so bright that it caused their eyes to hurt and fire intermittently spewing from its bottom turned a festive evening out into a terrifying night. 10 They stopped the car in the middle of the road, fearing they would be burned alive if they tried to go under the object. The car heated rapidly, forcing them out into the open where the heat seared their skin and caused their eyes to burn. Colby's stark terror caused Mrs. Landrum to get back into the car to console him, in spite of the heat . Mrs. Cash stayed outside, walking to the front of the car to get a better look. She was exposed directly to the radiation emitted by the object for up to 10 minutes, while the others were exposed for a much shorter period of time. As it turned out, the terrifying encounter was only the beginning. After the object flew away, followed by swarms of military helicopters, they restarted the car and headed for the safety of their homes. The beeping they heard in their heads during the encounter was now gone, but it was replaced by headaches, growing worse by the minute. That was the first clue that they had sustained medical injuries as a result of the encounter. During the remainder of the night the extent of their injuries became evident Betty's headache became worse and she was hit by waves of nausea. Her skin was burned to a bright red, her neck swelled and red blotches formed on her face. Over the next four days Betty's health degraded. Her eyes swelled closed, the red blotches became blisters containing clear fluid, and she was weak with diarrhea and nausea The headaches never ceased and she was unable to eat or drink. It was then she began her first of dozens of periods in hospitals that continue to the present. While in the hospital her hair began to fall out. Eventually, she was half bald. In the years after the incident she developed several types of cancer. Mrs. Landrum and Colby had problems too. During the night she heard Colby calling. Barely able to leave her bed, she went to see what was wrong and found he had vomited in bed. When she took him to the bathroom to clean him up, she found he was severely burned and so was she. During the ensuing days and weeks she had hair loss and both of them had diarrhea, vomiting, sores, growths, stomach pains, and more. The lessons to be learned from this case were many because the victims WwW suffered so greatly from injuries and had such a difficult time finding worthwhile help. Topping the list was the problem of getting proper treatment. Many people believe that doctors can look at them and prescribe a medicine that will cure them - they hold doctors in a god-like position. Because the victims in this incident, like many others, were afraid of ridicule if they admitted they saw a UFO and were harmed by it, they kept quiet and allowed the doctors to treat the visible symptoms. As a result, the doctors ran batteries of tests seeking the root cause of the injuries. It wasn’t until Betty's second stay in the hospital, when the doctor was expounding on his puzzlement over the cause of the injuries, that Colby admitted that he knew what happened. When the doctor heard about the UFO incident he admitted he knew nothing about such things, but he had the common sense to seek out another Houston doctor that could explain it to him. LESSON 1: The ridicule curtain must be eliminated. People need to be reeducated to the position that it is OK to admit they have not only seen a UFO, but been injured by it as well. Only then can proper treatment be delivered quickly, thereby eliminating days of testing trying to isolate the cause of the injury. LESSON 2: Most doctors are unaware of the facts about UFOs and UFO related injuries. A program designed to educate medical professionals is sorely needed. Perhaps the human physiological effects catalog can play a part in the educational process. At the time of the Cash-Landrum incident MUFON had several doctors listed as consultants, but there was no organized medical committee where the data could be analyzed and discussed openly. And few of the consultants wanted the public exposure of open participation in the work. Fortunately for the victims in this case one doctor did step forward to examine all of the medical records and to work freely with the primary care physicians. He was Dr. Peter Rank, Director of the Department of Radiology for Radiology Consultants in Madison, Wisconsin. His work was helpful to the doctors involved in the case and his participation was a real boost for the victims. 12 LESSON 3: Open and active involvement of the MUFON Medical Committee members is sorely needed. Obtaining copies of medical records is difficult and in some states nearly impossible. Dr. Rank assisted local investigators and the victims in requesting the records in the Cash-Landrum case. He provided the proper release forms and instructions on what to request. Even so, we were never able to get all of the records released. LESSON 4: It is necessary to use the proper channels and forms to obtain medical records. Medical professionals will cooperate if requests are properly made. This must be done with the consent of the victims and the records must be used to help the victims. During the investigation numerous requests for copies of medical records were received from writers, media people, debunkers, and opportunists. In every case, the requests were denied. There was no value added for the victims to allow wide distribution of their private records. LESSON 5: Private medica! records must be protected. No one is entitled to such records unless the victim wishes to release them. Normally, the victim will allow the records to be seen by other medical doctors. Private records should never be given to writers, media people, debunkers and the like regardless of how much pressure they apply. Betty Cash and Vickie Landrum allowed their injuries to be photographed and recorded for future analysis. They didn't know that this was important and while they were so ill they really didn’t care about the future need. All they wanted to do was survive and get well. Nevertheless, they cooperated with the investigators and allowed their injuries to be photographed on a number of occasions. Later, they were pleased to have the documentation in hand. LESSON 6: Using film and videotape to document the visible injuries is 13 of utmost importance in these cases. The human body changes daily as. it fights to heal the injuries. Documentation of the initial condition and the Progressive change in the condition is a real-time event. The investigator must document it as it happens. After Betty Cash and Vickie Landrum began to recover somewhat, they had a life preserving desire to find out the nature of the object that injured them. They believed that knowing what it was and what it used to harm them would allow the doctors to use better and more specific medical treatment for their ailments. Since a large number of military helicopters were interacting with the object, it was normal to expect that someone in the U.S. government knew the answers to their questions. They and the investigators involved exhausted every channel available to get the information, but to no avail. The government stonewalled them. Out of frustration they allowed the media an opportunity to cover their story in the hope that some of the helicopter pilots would come forward. One did and then he recanted. LESSON 7: Don't expect government help. The UFO cover up has been going on so long that it is useless to believe that help is forthcoming no matter how strong is the evidence of government involvement. After Betty Cash and Vickie Landrum had suffered through months of pain and agony, they could see that the doctors were trying hard to cure their ills, but they were not getting well. During the same time period media people would contact them for their story and offer in return some sort of help. Some kept their promises, others did not. For example, it was fairly obvious from the onset that their injuries were related to some type of electromagnetic radiation. The government agencies known for their radiation expertise claimed that they had no data on exposure of humans to radiation of various types. Twelve years later when the radiation exposure lid came off we found that the government had lied when they said they had no data, but it was too late. During those early days a television crew came to Houston from California. At the time Betty and Vickie were quite ill and didn’t want to be filmed. However, the crew Promised them a form of help that had not been offered before. The crew claimed that the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California had developed a DNA test that 14 could pinpoint the type of radiation that had caused their injuries. Betty and Vickie believed that they could get more specific medical treatment if they had the JPL data so they agreed to the filming. Unfortunately, after the crew completed the filming they left town and were never heard of again - they didn’t make good on their promise. LESSON 8: Don't believe in promises no matter how badly the victims need help. Don't allow them to be used by anyone. If there is any consideration that the promises have merit, then insist on having a written contract defining what is offered, when it will be delivered and include a financial penalty for failure to deliver. Always remember that the company making the promise is a business and expects to make money on the deal or they wouldn't be there. If they are legitimate they won't object to a contract. These are not the only lessons to be learned from this or other medical cases. Each one is and will be different. These incidents are happening worldwide; but the common element in each case is that humans are being victimized by something beyond their own understanding and control. Betty Cash and Vickie Landrum have suffered greatly. They are nice people who deserve better than that. If we give proper attention to the future victims of physiological effects caused by UFOs, then we will have repaid Betty and Vickie in some small way for their cooperation. They are the teal pioneers in this field. CONCLUSION UFO incidents are unpredictable. They can happen any place in the world at any time. UFO cases involving harm to humans are just as unpredictable and they happen in only a small percentage of the reported UFO incidents. Because these incidents seem to happen when least expected, investigators have been ill-equipped to deal with them. And because of the nature of the phenomenon, medical professionals have lacked the knowledge and desire to deal with this problem. Because the situation is different now, there is no reason for cases involving 15 human physiological effects to go undocumented or untreated because: 1) MUFON has a strong body of medical consultants who are involved in the MUFON Medical Committee; 2) the new Field Investigator's manual contains instructions on how to deal with medical injury cases; 3) MUFON headquarters stands ready to refer cases where physiological effects are apparent to the Medical Committee; 4) the first edition of the human physiological effects catalog is ready to serve as a guide for the accumulation of data in this important part of UFO research; and 5) we are working to extend this protocol to the medical community as a whole. 1873 2230 1886/10/24 1893 1903/12/24 HUMAN PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECTS CATALOG CASE LISTING SOUTH AUSTRALIA Source: The Jarrold Listings, Robin Northover, Post A bright milky-white light followed a sailing ship for almost an hour, It came over the ship in waves.
