COURSE OUTLINE
Sociolinguistics
Aims
This course aims to provide key aspects of language use and variation in context,
the concepts and methods used to study them, and a range of relevant literature.
Participants will be encouraged to read and think critically about the issues
raised, and to develop specialist interests of their own. The course will be
particularly relevant to those considering writing a thesis in the fields of
sociolinguistics, applied linguistics or language learning.
Contents
Initial sessions will present an overview of the field; thereafter, specific topics will
be examined in greater depth through students presentations and discussions.
Potential topics will include:

What sociolinguistics is

Macro- and micro-sociolinguistics

Social patterns of language variation

Language, power and solidarity

Language spread and competition

Multilingualism

Language Choice and code switching

Language and identity

Minority language rights

Language norms and attitudes

Language and gender

Literacy

Ethnography of communication

Sessions will take the form of seminars, with presentations followed by related
activities and discussions. Preparatory reading forms an important part of the
work to be done.
Assessment
Assessment will be based on seminar presentations and either one long essay

(c.12-15 pages) or two shorter essays (6-7 pages), plus the quality of preparation
and participation in discussions. Preparation for the seminars forms an integral
part of the course.
