Odyssey Essay - First Body Paragraph
By creating a hero like odysseus, Homer suggests that even otherwise admirable
characters have flaws.
By Odysseus taunting a monster after a escape, Homer suggests that even noble, and
brave heroes can display poor sportsmanship. When Odysseus and his men escape the Cyclops
cave, Odysseus explains that he taunted the monster Far out, as far offshore as shouted words
would carry, I sent a few [words, insults] back to the adversary(Bk 9, Ln 129-132). Homer says
that Odysseus and his men escape the cyclops cave before he taunts the monster.Odysseus goes
Far out , as far offshore because he knows that if he taunts the cyclops on the island, it will
lead to the death of his men, so he goes where the monster can not touch him. Odysseus taunts
the monster as far offshore as shouted words would carry, Odysseus is so excited that he has to
taunt the cyclops so every monster on the island can hear. Homer describes him shouting because
people usually shout when they get excited, and odysseus is shouting because he is excited that
he beat a legendary monster. Odysseus says I sent a few back to the adversary., Odysseus is
acting like the cyclops was no big deal, and it was just a small little enemy in his way . Homer is
trying to make Odysseus relatable to the readers or audience, Homer is detailing Odysseus as a
brager yet a hero.
