GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS:- No unauthorized person should be allowed to enter the engine room. The temperature in the engine room should never be below 5°c (41°R). If this is not possible the cooling chamber should be drained after stopping the engine, as they might burst because of freezing of water. This must be specially observed during the winter months, if the engine is idle for several days. In the interest of a regular supervision of the engine it is strongly recommended that the engineer keeps records of every single engine by making daily entries in a special service record books as to running time effective fuel consumption, frequency of oil changes, repairs performed, and other useful data. Working process: The engine is single-acting and works on four strokes cycle: 1* stroke :- During the downward stroke of the piston the suction valve is opened and fresh water is drawn in. 2*Q stroke :- The suction valve is closed and the fresh air compressed and there by heated. The temperature thus attained is sufficient to assure proper ignition of the injected fuel. Injection in to the ante-chamber begins at the end of the compression period i.e., just before the upper dead center. ‘The pressure required for injecting the fuel is produced by the fuel pump. The first ignition and partial combustion of the fuel takes place in the ante-chamber, resulting in an increase of pressure. 3" stroke:- The remaining unburnt fuel is blown by this over pressure from the ante-chamber in to the combustion chamber proper, where it is burnt. The resulting pressure causes the down — stroke of the piston and the exhaust gases start escaping through the exhaust piping in to the open. 4™ stroke:- with this last stroke the gases are pushed out of the cylinder chamber by the raising piston and the exhaust valve is closed. Maintenance of engine :- | preparation for starting for the first time:- When starting the engine for first time it is presumed that the engine and its driven unit has been erected and aligned. It is necessary to check crank web deflection of I* crankpin. It is accessible on removal of inspection door on the exhaust manifold side. The piping should be check for correctness and tightness. (1) check for free rotation of crankshaft by rotating the flywheel by a barring device (2) fill water in balance water tank/radiator. Engine will then automatically be filled up with water. check for leak especially in oil pump. Remove air by operating vent cock in piping. (3) fill lubricating oil in pump up to upper mark on dipstick. Operate the semi-rotary hand pump and circulate the lube oil in all pipe lines etc. check whether oil has reached the farther point and oil pressure gauge for engine and turbo charger (if fitted) has a pressure of minimum 1.5 kg/cm’. return the three way cock to normal position. (4) fill in diesel oil. Remove air from feed pipes by operating head priming pump of fuel feed pump. Afterward operates, fuel injection pump lifter by special handle supplied with engine and remove air from injecting pipe. You will hear typical ping sound only when diesel in injected. “2.preparation for starting engine daily:- When starting the engine the following operations are necessary. (1)See, wheather the crankshaft can easily be tumed by hands, with barring device. (2) pump up the oil piping by means of the hand pump. Grease all the places meant to be grease lubricated with hot water pump grease.
