Abstract
Waterenvironmentsplayanimportantroleinthedisseminationofantibioticresistantbacteria
amonghumans,animalsandagriculturalsources.Inordertoassessthespreadofextended
spectrumlactamase(ESBL)producingEnterobacteriaceae,weanalyzed279effluent
samplesfrom21wastewatertreatmentplantsinNavarra(northernSpain).Atotalof185
cefpodoximeresistantbacteriawereisolatedonChromIDESBLagarplates,withhigh
predominanceofEscherichiacoliamongisolatedspecies(73%).ESBLproductionwas
determinedbydifferentmethods,concludingitspresencein86.5%oftheisolatesbythe
combinationdisktest,75.7%bydoubledisksynergytestand73.5%byMicroScan()NM37
automatedsystem.PCRandsequencinganalysisshowedthatthepredominantlactamases
(bla)geneswereblaCTxM(67.4%)followedbyblaTEM(47%),blaSHV(17.4%)andblaOxA
(8.3%)furthermore,twoormorelactamasesgeneswerefoundin34.9%oftheisolates.The
resultsdemonstratethehighprevalenceofESBLproducingEnterobacteriaceaeineffluentwater
fromwastewatertreatmentplantsandconfirmtheneedtooptimizecurrentdisinfection
proceduresandtoimprovemanagementofwastewaterinanefforttominimizereservoirsof
resistantbacteria.Furtherstudiesareneededforexaminingthepresenceofthesebacteriain
otherenvironmentsandfordeterminingthepotentialdisseminationroutesoftheseresistances
aswellastheirimpactonhumanhealth.
