Answer ALL questions.
PART A — (10 x 2 = 20 marks)
What is a slender column?
How will you control cracking of reinforced conerete structural element?
What is meant by deep beam and where it is used?
What do you mean by shear wall? List down its types.
What is meant by spandrel beam?
List down the characteristics of yield line.
What is moment redistribution? Draw moment curvature diagram.
State the assumptions made in Hillerborg’s strip method.
How will the concrete and reinforcement behave under cyclic loading?
Define ductility.
PART B — (6 x 16 = 80 marks)
(a) A rectangular cantilever beam of 3 m span is 300 mm wide and 600 mm
deep, and is reinforced with 3 bars of 25 mm diameter at tension side,
placed at an effective cover of 50 mm. It is subjected to a maximum
bending moment of 120 kNm at the fixed end, out of which 50 % is due to
permanent loads. Check the beam for deflection. Adopt M 20 grade
concrete and Fe 415 grade steel.

A rectangular beam of 6 m span is 300 mm wide and 500 mm deep, and is
reinforced with 8 bars of 20 mm diameter at tension side, placed at an
effective cover of 50mm. It is subjected to a uniformly distributed load of
16 kNin, inclusive of its own weight. Calculate the surface crack width at
a point
() Directly under the bar
(ii) On tension face- midway between two bars. Adopt M 20 grade
conerete and Fe 415 grade steel.
Design a deep beam of 300 mm wide and 4 m deep, simply supported over
a clear span of 6m. The beam carries a live load of 160 kN/m and is
supported on walls of 600 mm thick on each end. Adopt M 20 grade
concrete and Fe 415 grade steel having permissible tensile stress of
230N/mm?.
Or
A corbel attached to a 250 mm x 250 mm R.C.C column, carries a
factored load of 400 kN at a distance of 170 mm from the face of the
column. Design the corbel using M 25 grade concrete.
Design the interior panel of a flat slab with drops for an office floor to suit
the following data:
Size of office floor = 25 m x 25 m
Size of panel = 5 mx 5m
Live Load = 4 kN/m?
Adopt M 20 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade steel.
Or
A rectangular slab 3.5 m x 5 m in size is simply supported at the edges.
‘The slab is expected to carry a service load of 3 kNim? and a floor
finishing load of 1 kN/m?. Use M 20 grade concrete and Fe 415 grade
steel. Design the slab
(i) If it is isotropically reinforced
Gi) If it is orthotropically reinforced with yw = 0.75.
With a neat sketch, explain the moment curvature relationship for under
reinforced, balanced and over reinforced beams.
Or
Draw BMD for a beam, fixed at ends and carrying total uniformly
distributed load, Wu, after 20 % redistribution Determine the magnitude
by which point of contra flexure is shifted.
Explain the effect of high temperature on steel and concrete. What are
the factors that influence the fire resistance of reinforced concrete
member? i
Or
What are the main design requirements of ductile shear walls in
earthquake resistant design? Explain.
