island,andbuildsheltersallofthoseareimportantcharacteristicsofanorderlysociety,but
slowlythesocietyfallstopieces.Jackandmostoftheotherboysbecomeentirelyfocusedon
hunting,andstarttoneglecttheirotherresponsibilities.Theybecomecompletelyfocusedon
huntingandkilling,astheybegintoforgettheproperbehaviorstheyhavelearned,andthey
begintobereferredtoas"savages"(141).Theyperformritualsanddances,allcenteredaround
killingthepig,astheyyelltheirchant,"Killthebeast!Cutitsthroat!Spillitsblood!"(152).They
eventhinkitisfunwhenkillingthelargesowthatwaslyingpeacefullywithitsbabies,andwere
"excitedbythelongchaseandthedroppedblood"(135).Eventuallyallthiskillingleadsupto
themurderofSimonandPiggy,andtheyevenattempttokillRalph.Thisshowsthatastheboys
areisolatedfromtherestoftheworld,theirinnerselfisrevealed,andthatinnerselfisextremely
focusedondeath,killing,andmurder.Thesecharacteristicsareslowlyrevealedastheboysare
ontheisland,revealingthatmenareinherentlyevil,astheyfindjoyinkillinganddeath.
Therefore,theviolencethatdevelopsintheboysonislandisduetothefactthatmenare
inherentlyevil,andthegoodinmencomesfromtheirconditioninginsociety.
