The spinal cord ends at the lower end of L1, while the cauda equina consists of multiple nerve roots beginning at L1. Spondylosis is age-related degeneration of the bones (vertebrae) and discs in the spine. Manifestations of cervical and lumbar spondylosis include radiculopathy from root compression, causing sensory and motor weakness in the muscles supplied by the compressed root, and myelopathy from cord compression, resulting in sensory and motor deficits below the level of compression.
