For my 1960s interdisciplinary, my partner and I researched the significance of
environmental awareness occurring back in the 1960s, as well as the contemporary issues still existing. For the project we created an animoto containing information on the different issues the earth was facing and included relevant pictures regarding the issues. One of the issues that we researched was the over usage of pesticides on crops to terminate insects that threatened the growth of the different crops. A book called Silent Spring was written by Rachel Carson about the problems regarding pesticides. In the book, she wrote about how the over usage of harmful pesticides was infecting the crops and would, over time, harm humans through consumption of the products. As well as harming humans, if the same pesticide kept being used, then over time the insects would become vitally immune to the insecticide through natural selection. Before being assigned this project I didnt think about the environment, and I didnt find it a priority in my life. In fact, I didnt even want to do the assignment on the environment, I wanted to research the feminism aspect of the 1960s, but the topic caught my attention and I wanted to do something that no one else was researching so that my project could be different. In doing the project, I realized the gravity of what I was researching, and it changed my perspective on the issue. I care about the topic now to the extent where I think about the problems faced in todays society and have even researched about the different concerns outside of class, encompassing pollutant problems and others. Id say that this interdisciplinary opened my eyes about the world around me and how I need to at least put some thought and effort into preserving it for the generations to come, as well as my own.
