Dear Colleague:
‘As we prepare for a smooth transition in government leadership, one thing that must not
cchange is the remarkable progress being made by our nation’s schoolchildren. The
enclosed document, Grea! Expectations, provides an overview of the movement to hold
schools accountable for the achievement of every child, as well as the challenges ahead.
‘Named for the common denominator of all successful schools, Great Expectations begins
Wa Took Back BT TE BISTORY Of pb iC-ecrCaTiON Tm ATERFea—Te aks THE tae UESTiONS
How did we get here? How did standards fall, and what are we doing to raise them
again? [f we want the best and brightest to teach in our most challenging educational
settings, why don’t we pay them more? And when teachers and schools don't serve
students’ needs, what types of consequences are in order?
Great Expectations tells the story of a remarkable comeback by our nation’s students,
many of whom are achieving record-high test scores in reading and math. Above all, it
proves that reforms are yielding results. Low-income and minority children who once
‘were lefi behind are now making some of the greatest gains.
T hope that this document will serve as a useful reference for you and others working to
advance educational opportunity. [also hope that you will join me in calling for further
improvement. Reform is never easy, and it's never finished. But together, we can and

education, and to help students and schools rise to the challenge.

Jeb,
When you were Governor, you were instrumental in the launch of our school-based
program in Florida for parents and their children. This program, which focuses on
parental involvement, has now grown to every state in the nation.
Our organization, Family First, a national non-profit organization, is significantly
expanding these fathers and kids and mothers and kids school breakfast programs
called All Pro Dad's Day and iIMOM Morning, respectively. All Pro Dad, with Coach
Tony Dungy as its national spokesman, has its All Pro Dad’s Day chapters in almost
1,000 schools across the country. The concept is a simple idea with a profound
impact. Once a month, an hour before school starts, fathers and their children meet in
the school cafeteria. During this time, they eat and discuss a wide range of family
topics, spend time together, create fun memories, and are equipped with resources to
strengthen their relationship. You can leam more about the program and hear from
Coach Dungy himself at: htto/www.allprodad.com/teameaptain!
In the same manner, Family First also has a program for mothers and their children
that meets once a month in the school cafeteria. At iMOM Moming, moms and kids.
have breakfast, a short program of fun activities and lively discussion on topics that are
relevant to school-aged children. With over 300 schools signed up in this newly
launched program, iIMOM Moming is quickly becoming a national motherhood

Together with the Foundation for Excellence in Education and the Sutton Trust, Sir Peter Lampl and I are co-
hosting an international education summit next February in Miami, Florida, focusing on teacher effectiveness
reform. You may be aware that the Sutton Trust, at Sir Peter’s direction, has done extensive work on the
interplay between social mobility and education. We will be inviting an clite and bipartisan group of high-level
US policy makers -- governors, state education chiefs, mayors —and their counterparts from 4 or 5 nations to
participate, and would like for you to participate as well. Your expertise and experience is vital to what we
hope to achieve at the event,
Britain's Education Secretary, Michael Gove, is confirmed to attend on behalf of the UK.
Our plan is to keep the summit small, so that we can lear from each other how to push teacher effectiveness
policies to the next level. While here in the US we may be at the forefront of using student data in the
evaluation of teachers, we are woefully behind in ensuring that the best candidates are entering teacher
preparation programs, and subsequently leaving those programs prepared to be effective.
The dates for this summit are Thursday, Ecbruary 6 - Friday, February 7.2014, Brandi Brown, the
Foundation’s Director of Events, will be contacting your office to discuss your availability. We believe this
topic is critical to reform, and there is much to be gained from an international conversation, We hope you can
join us in Miami,
