=“ PERMEABILITY TEST = INTRODUCTION This test demonstrates the laboratory measurement of coefficient of permeability of soil using:- 1. Constant head parameter 2. Falling head parameter THEORY ( ‘The principal of the constant head parameter is illustrated in Fig. 1. Water from the reservoir is allowed to flow through a soil sample of known cross sectional area °A’ at a constant rate, The hydraulic head ‘h' is measured between two points a distance ‘I’ apart. The water flowing through the sample is collected in a measuring cylinder to find the quantity of water °Q passing through the sample during time *t’. — ee According to Darcy's law:- i vo om wi : emt =k x Hl 4d - ert, Ke x A x h)/T (Kea / Yeh ce sam ¢ feccoreemrit tess I Rese avery, r h : ‘ Or. SAMPLE [cross sectionm. area cauéernh veese, ———| The principal of the falling head parameter is illustrated in Fig. 2, Water is allowed to run through the stand pipe of cross sectional area ’a’ into the sample of cross sectional area *A’. The times t, ,t, ty ete. are noted when the dropping water level indicates readings h,, ho, hy, etc. During a small time interval ‘dt’ the change in height of the water level in the stand pipe is Cah), the negative sign indicating that the head is decreasing. The velocity of fall is (-dh/dt), Applying Darey’s law:- Vo ski 8 v wat ki Ade ka db = nah Integrating STAND pIDE ed C CROSS SECTIONAL AREA
