Basketball Net

Drawn in CAD by John Town

Original Design by Tom Kaiser & Associates

Project Info
Tom Kaiser approached me through my engineering
teacher, Harvey Hans. With him he brought the sketches
of a basketball net design that he and his friend designed.
This design would be for a net that is used outdoors for
commercial purchases, like at amusement parks.
However, this design would be different in that a net
would be attached so someone would not have to run
after the balls when they were shot. I accepted the offer,
and began research into what normal nets would look like.

Research

Research
As previously seen, Tom was right in that
currently existing basketball games are
flawed in that the system does not have a
way to retrieve balls shot besides a person
running after them. This can cost the
amusement parks a good deal of money
since they would have to pay this worker.

Sketches
These were the sketches given to me by
Kaiser to use in my design.

Modeling
To fully model the basketball net, I needed
to create 4 parts: the carts, the backboard,
the net base (in black), and the side nets
(in blue). I created the parts in Autodesk
Inventor then assembled them in the same
program.

Reflection
Overall, Kaiser was very satisfied with the
work I did. This was the first job I did for
him, but he told me that he would have
more work to bring me in the future.
