Name of Disaster: River Erosion


Locations: Bogra, Shirajgonj, Jamalpur District of Bangladesh

About 130 mile long Brahmaputra flood protection embankment has been grasped by the Jamuna
river in last 30 years. By the by, the newly reconstructed alternative embankments effort has
been gone in to ruin due to strong current in the river indicating the poor construction of that of
the embankment.
Bogra District
The Chondonbaisha spar in Sahriakandi of Bogra district and the Meghai spar in Kzipur upazila
of Shirajginj district have recently been assaulted by the Jamuna river erosion. It is for the 3rd
time of breaching that has found in Chondonbaisha spar since its recent reconstruction.
Shirajgonj District
Continuous river erosion has also threatened the town flood protection embankment in
Shirajgonj. The badly affected areas are Puthiabari, Char Malshapara Biyara, Pikepara and
Ghonapara in Shirajgonj District as number of houses, trees and crops land has been devouring
everyday due to river erosion in these areas. As a result, indigent people with their children and
domestic animal are searching for temporary shelter.
Jamalpur:
Erosion has taken a serious turn in Sharishabari upazila under Jamalpur district of Bangladesh.
At least Thousands of dwelling houses, vast tract of cropland and many trees at Sharishabari
upazila likely to be devoured due to the Jamuna river erosion. The Sharishabari-Bhuapur road
that is the lone link road between Dhaka and Sharishabari has been devoured by the Jamuna river
much to the sufferings of the locals.
Recent Jamuna river erosion has threatened a significant number of GO and NGO infrastructure
including an ancient religious places, college, post office, school and markets.
Every day lots of blocks of embankment have been demolishing into the river bed in the
mentioned affected areas of Jamalpur district. The recent erosion has also damaged the flood
protection embankment that has been built in 2005, by the Bangladesh Govt. to protect the
villages from the Jamuna river erosion.

Damage report:

At lease 9 villages of Bogra, Gaibandha, Pabna and Shirajgonj have been destroyed in the
last 15 days due to Jamuna river erosion rendering about 500 households homeless.
Moreover, another 10 villages become more vulnerable to erosion in these areas. More
than 150 dwelling houses have been damaged in the Char Malshapara Biyara, Pikepara
and Ghonapara in Shirajgonj District in last week.
At least 15 villages of Pogoldigha, Aowna and Shatpowa union of Sharishabari upazila of
Jamalpur district likely to be destroyed rendering more than tens of thousand people
indigent.
