Siblings of George E. Childs

Georges parents, Thomas Noble Childs (died between 1910/1918) and Mary Nellie Beardsley
(died Oct 26, 1918) were gone before all their children were adults.
We see "orphaned" children by 1920 ... but who comes to their rescue? ... big sister Edith.

In the 1920 U.S. Federal census ... Ward 29, Chicago, Cook, IL ... Edith Childs (21) is single and
head of household that includes 4 of her 5 siblings ... Olive Childs (19), William Childs (13),
Claude Childs (10) and Florence Childs (8) ... Edith is working as a telephone operator.
Note: Brother GEORGE E. CHILDS is not enumerated here; where is he?
(per Charles W. Childs -- George E Childs son -- George joined the navy after his mother died.
Edith did not like this, and she did not like that George later married Margaret Brosius, a Catholic,
so George became a "black sheep" in the family. However, Edith and Olive, who remained single
and living together were comfortable financially, and always came on Christmas to bring gifts for
George and Marge's four boys: Bill, Bob, Chuck and Jerome.)

In the 1930 census ... 3846 63rd Place, Chicago, Cook, IL ... this "Childs" family of five siblings
are still together ... with everybody single and working ... Edith (31) telephone operator ... Olive
(29) office clerk at steam railroad ... William (23) laborer at electric supply factory .. Claude (20)
gas station attendant ... Florence (18) telephone operator.

In this same 1930 census, George Childs is living in Chicago with wife Margaret and two sons
(William & Robert). He is a cab driver.

1940 U.S. Federal census: (2nd St. W. Lincoln Highway) Rich, Cook Co., IL ...
Edith M. Childs (42) is telephone operator for Voice Telephone Co. and her sister Olive M. Childs
(40) is a private secretary.
They are living with their sister Florence M. Childs (29) and her husband Carl W. McIntosh (31) an
assistant buyer for an auto supply company and the couples' son Gerald Lee McIntosh (4).
Both Edith & Olive Childs are making $1400/year ... Carl McIntosh (college grad) is making
$1440/year. ... and Florence Childs has "other sources of income".
They all claim to have been living in Chicago in 1935.
