Communication
One of the main things that the communication goal aims for is for students to
collaborate effectively and efficiently with others during group work. This goal directs to ones
choices on a multitude of levels. Personally, I have had the opportunity to how exactly my
personal choices affected my group members. Through my experience with the previous group
project, I have come to learn first hand what the communication goals strives for.
Coming from an art background, I was less than familiar (or comfortable) with working
in-group projects. Though I did work in more than a few group projects during high school, the
setting and the overall experience is different than one we are working in now. The main
difference that sets them apart is the communication aspect. Here at Portland State, the
communications seeks for their students to collaborate effectively and learn with and from each
other while doing so. For myself, I was less concerned with collaborating with my peers, and
more concerned with what grade we were going to end up with. This was a flaw on my part,
and now that I am analyzing how I acted, I now know how I want to act in my future group
projects.
This group project has both had an effect on both my public and private life. I made the
decision to delete my group members work without communicating with them beforehand.
This was my personal decision which effected the way my group member felt which lead to a
dispute. At the time, I was not thinking about how my actions could have made my group
member feel. I was acting out of my own selfishness and not taking responsibility for my

actions. This is an ethical issue that is closely related to the goal, but more than that, it is a
personal experience of mine.
As much as writing a research paper teaches you about the diversity of the human
experience, a personal experience can teach you how to be responsible when making decisions.
What I have learned from the group project is something that can apply to any aspect in my
life. The kind of lesson that is relevant regardless of what context it is in is the kind of lesson
that will last more than a lifetime.
