OBJECTIVES Explore sources of maps and data Learn vector spatial data formats Identify and change projections Examine metadata View attribute data GIS Tutorial 5 Importing Spatial and Attribute Data This tutorial serves as a guide to using GIS data sources, including some of the major free resources on the Internet. This chapter compares the major file formats used to create GIS basemaps that you will encounter, including shapefiles, Arclnfo coverages, CAD files, and raster images. You will learn how to export and import files to and from other applications. Because file formats and map projections vary, you will learn how to manipulate and transform them. ent yam Sitar _Importing Spatial andl Attribute Data | Explore sources of maps and data ESRI Web site ESRI, the world’s leader in GIS and mapping software, maintains a Web site that is a useful resource for abstaining information and data used to create GIS maps. Learn vector spatial data formats Coverages A coverage is a type of GIS vector data format used to store geographic features. Coverages typically store one or more feature classes that are topologically and thematically related. For example, in a cadastral dataset it is common for a coverage to store the parcel boundaries @s polygons and the lot lines as arcs (lines). You can add coverage data to ArcMap and use it for analysis and presentation, but coverage data cannot be edited with ArcMap, When browsing data within Windows Explorer, coverages appear as folders containing several files. Ke Shapefiles Shapefiles are another type of GIS vector data format used to store geographic features. Unlike coverages, which are made up of a collection of feature classes, a shapefile can represent anly one feature class. For example, if you wanted to store parcel boundaries and lot lines using shapefiles, you would have to create two shapefiles— ‘one to store the parcel boundaries as polygons and another to store the lots as lines. Shapefiles can be created, edited, and analyzed using ArcView, ArcEditor, or Arcinto. Shapefiles consist of at least three files: a dbf file, a .shx file, and a shp file. Each of these files is prefixed with the shapefile's name. The dbf file stores the attributes, the .shp file stores the geometry of the features, and the shy file stores an index of the spatial geometry. Geographic coordinate systems Use latitude and longitude coordinates on the surface of a sphere while projected coordinate systems use 2 mathematical conversion to transform latitude and longitude coordinates to a flat surface. Maps obtained fram the US. Census are typically in geographic coordinates; U.S. maps obtained from local planning departments are typically in projected coordinate systems (e.g., Slate Plane coordinates). World projections Because the earth is spherical and maps are flat, GIS applications require that a mathematical formulation be applied to the earth to represent it on a flat surface. This is called a map projection, and it causes some Gistortions af distance, area, shape, or direction. ArcMap has over a hundred projections from which you may choose. The Hammer-Aitoffis good for use on a world map, being an equal-area projection and preserving area, Ie distorts direction and distance. 2 This time apply the Robinson projection to your map, then save the map as Robinson.mxd. ‘This projection minimizes distortions of many kinds, striking a balance between conformal and equal-area projections. importing Spatial and Attrihufa Data tania jes Projections of the USA In the following sections, you will get experience with projections commonly used for maps of the United States. Sevseet Tilo Importing Spatial and Attribute Data | State Plane coordinate system The State Plane coordinate system is a series of projections. It is a coordinate system thal divides the fifty U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands into more than 120 numbered sections, referred to as zones, each with its own finely tuned projection. Used mostly by local government agencies such as counties, municipalities, and cities, the State Plane coordinate system was designed for large-scale mapping: in the United Slates. It was developed in the 1930s by the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey to provide a common reference system for surveyors and mapmakers. The first step in using a State Plane projection is to look up the correct zone for your area Look up a State Plane Zone for a county 1 Start your Web browser, go to www.ngs.noaa.gov/TOOLS/spe.html, and click the Find Zone link. These projects are quite good for areas atvout the size of a state or smaller Look up a UTM Zone 1 Start your Web browser, go to www.dmap.co.uk/utmworld.htm, and determine the zone for western Pennsylvania You should find that western Pennsylvania is in zone 17 north. 2 Close your browser. Styamt Tiaras Importing Spatial and Attribute Data’ Examine metadata Metadata is often described as data about the data. In ArcGIS Desktop, ArcCatalog is used to create and view metadata. When creating metadata, some of the information, such as the spatial extent of the data, can be automatically created by the software, but much of the metadata must be entered manually. ArcMap has a menu item fer viewing metadata, which you will use now. Open a map document 1 Open the StatePlaneMap.mxd map document, click the Add Data button, browse to C:\Gistutorial\ UnitedStates\Pennsylvania, acid PACounties, and drag the resulting map layer to the bottom of the table of contents. 2 Change the symbol for PACounties to Hollow Fill, with a bright red 1.5-width outline, You will see that che county boundaries you just added are quite crudely drawn and lack the derail of the tracts and municipality layers. The metadata for PACounties explains why. soa Open a metadata file 1 Right-click PACounties and click Data, View Metadata. The Metadata window opens with the FGDC ESRI style sheet in use for metadata viewing and the Description tab selected. Maricopa County uses GIS to ensure accurate voting boundaries, maintain voter lists, locate polling places, plan voting precincts, recruit poll workers, and deliver supplies In this exercise you will focus on skills needed to download data from an ESR! Web site and prepare the data to use in ArcGIS. For the Maricopa County voting GIS, you will download voting districts, streets, and census blocks for the purpose of building an interactive GIS to be used for selecting schools for use as polling sites. You will also download block-level census data from the ESRI Web site, join this data to the block map, and use it to display the spatial distribution of the voting-age population. Provided is an x,y table that shows schools and their geographical coordinates. Such data can be downloaded from Web sites such as httpulhwma. hometownlocator.com, but using it requires extensive editing and would take too much time for this assignment Stare with the following: Shapefiles From the ESRI Census 2000 TIGER/Line Data Portal, download the following shapefiles and save them in CAGIStutorial\ Answers\Assignment5 © tgr04013b1KO0.shp Census Block 2000 polygons © tgr04013IKA.shp Line Features (roads * tgr04013vot00.shp—Voting Districts 2000 polygons Data table From the same ESRI Web site, download the following database and save it in C:\GIStutorial\Answers\ Assignment5 + tgr04000sf1bIk.dbf—Cens Block Demographics (SF1) From C:AGistutorial\MariconaCounty, use * CountySchools.dbf The coordinates hav: County 1e correct State Plai projection for h Cimporking Spatialand Attribute Data Tutorials imme Create an interactive GIS Create @ new map document called CAGistutorial\ Answers\Assignment&\Assignment5-Lmxd. For very small-grain spatial data, such as provided by census blocks, a good approach is to use small, square point markers of the same size and with a monochromatic color ramp. Symbolize blocks using graduated symbols for the Voters attribute and use a “trick" to make all symbols the same size, Use size from 4 to 4 to get sarne size and then double-click each symbol to change calor for the monochromatic ramp. Set the background color to No Color. The benefit of the “trick” is that ArcMap uses point markers instead of choropieth maps for the blocks, Zoom in to a populated area of yaur map document with a map scale of 1:30,000. After downloading the .e00 file, you will transform it to a coverage using the import function in ArcCatalog and finally transform it toa shapefile.
