This wood has much to offer visitors, including stunning panoramic views across patchwork fields and leisurely country walks through enticing leafy glades. ‘Appropriately named - as a “seek” is a field which runs down to a stream - this young woodland ‘occupies a slope south west of Oakham. Although the village of Braunston is believed to be located on the site of foresters’ dwellings within the medieval Great Forest of Rutland, very little of this ancient woodland remains in the county. The Seek was planted in the 1990s with a variety of species, such as oak, ash, hazel, hawthorn, blackthorn and holly. Planted by Friends of the Earth in 2007, the orchard boasts an assortment of local varieties of fruit trees, including pear, damson, greengage, and quince. Local wildlife has been quick to adopt this new woodland as home. Rutland Natural History Society has already recorded 20 species of butterfly and 95 species of moth at the site, together with a wide variety of flowering plants and woodland animals. The surrounding environment supports healthy populations of farmland birds, including species which have drastically declined elsewhere. Vigilant visitors may be fortunate enough to glimpse tree sparrow, grey partridge, bullfinch, linnet and yellowhammer. How to find the wood Public access The Seek is 200 yards north east of Braunston-in-Rutland, less than 2 miles from the centre of Oakham. The site has good parking facilities in a lay-by adjacent to the wood’s main entrance. Visitors walking from Braunston may also access the wood via a gate to the south west of the site. Both pedestrian entrances link to the network of paths which allow access to all parts of the wood. The pathways are wide grassy rides.
