‘This activity focuses on measurement using various sized “fish’. For this
activity, participants will use blue construction paper and various sized
“fish” cut out from construction paper. Participants are then to guess
what the measurements are for the “fish”. Once they guess, parents can
help them measure the actual length of the “fish” (make sure you write
down the "guess" and “actual” measurements to look back on). On the
handout, there is @ “guess” and “actual” chart that can be filled out by
participants. After all the measurements are recorded, parents and
/ children can st down and justly thelr answers and come up wth logical
solutions as to why the fishes “guess” and “actual” numbers were or
were not correct. As a follow up activity, parents can have their children
“guess” and measure actual length of household items.
Follow Up Questions
1. How did you come with the estimate measurement of the “fish”?
2. Are there ways you can measure without a ruler and still come up with the correct answer?
