Repair of a Slipped Crankshaft
Main Engines
Deor Sirs,
At special, unfavourable occasions, for instance ro ng of the engine in cose
of loss of the propeller or a broken propeller shaft or by leakage into a cylinder,
slippage of the main engine crankshaft may occur between crank web and crank
pin or crank web and main bearing journal.
Y
Slippoge can be ascertained by control of the shrink mark between the shaft part
ond crank web, the mark being carried out os a concentric drilling in the shrink
joint.
Slippoge between crank pin and crank web will cause distortion in the main bear-
ing and is controlled by a deflection reading of the crankshaft and by control of
the bridge gauge measurements over the main bearing journals.
At a minor slippage between crank web and main bearing journal it may be
sufficient to adjust the cams to compensate for the altered crank angles for port
of the engine. However, a check must be made on the torsional vibration con
ditions of the plant, before making a final decision with regard to omission of
a turning-back of the slippoge. We further point out that, dependent on the
size of the slippoge, free forces will arise in the engine and might possibly couse
vibrations in the ship's hull.
To avoid docking for a longer period for the repair of such damage we have
developed a method, by which the shaft part is being cooled down by liquid
nitrogen, whereafter the crank web is heated until the shrink force is eased.BURMEISTER & WAIN
By means of special tools the shaft ond web are turned back into place during the
ralatively short interval before the heat reaches the cooled-down shaft part.
In coses where the slippoge is large it may be necessary to repeat the operation
several times.
We have carried out, with good result, several repairs according to the above-
mentioned method which fully meets the demands of the classification societies.
Yours faithfully,
