Abstract:
The objective of this project was to create a World Wide Web server independent of any
other machine; such a machine could be maintained by an administrator. The World Wide
Web server selected for this project was the NCSA httpd server, and the operating system
supporting this server was Linux. The servers name was angelo and it was physically
located in room 3 of the L building, at the University of Illinois at Springfield (UIS)
campus. To keep a log of the users accessing the server, I used the Wwwstat and Wusage
statistical servers. The server I created had the capability to access, retrieve, and save any
information available on the internet.
I described in detail the entire process of constructing the server. This process began with
the initialization of the operating system through the implementation of the full function
server. The step-by-step guide to the most important procedures is presented in an easy
to follow and easy to read format. Based on personal experience, I include some helpful
guidelines and important notes about things to watch for while the reader install his/her
server. I emphasize the information that is necessary for installing THE Linux operating
system and the NCSA httpd server. Also included is a detailed description of how to
retrieve, set up, and configure both statistical processes.
After the server is fully functioning, I created a home page for the School of Business and
Management at the University. It is located on the angelo server in the
http://angelo.uis.edu/www directory. Once I completed the home page, it was to be
permanently assigned to http://www.uis.edu/~hadidi public directory. The home page
will be maintained by the MIS Department at UIS.
