Urinary System

By Paul Frimel P3

The Urinary System

Kidneys: filter waste
from blood and
produce urine
Bladder: a sac that
holds urine
Ureters: thin tubes
that take pee from
the kidney to bladder
Urethra: carries urine
from the bladder out
of the body

The Urinary System

Functions:
Excretion: removal of
wastes
Elimination:
discharge of water
products into the
environment
Homeostatic
regulation:
maintaining blood
balance and blood
pressure

How Nephrons Accomplish

Filtration
Filtration takes place in
the glomerlus
It causes water and
small molecules to be
filtered
It is driven by
hydrostatic pressure of
the blood
Blood cells and large
molecules cant be
passed through the filter

How Nephrons Accomplish

Reabsorption
Nephrons move
between adjacent
tubule cells before
entering peritubular
capillaries
Paracellular
reabsorption is fluid
leakage between cells
Transcellular
reabsorption passes
from fluid to apical
membrane

Urinary System
Disorders
BPH: gland
enlargement that
causes urination
difficulty
Kidney Stone: a small
deposit that forms in
the kidneys and is
often painful when
passed
Interstitial cystitis:
bladder condition

Filtration
Filtration takes
place in renal
corpusle
Blood pressure
forces water and
dissolved solutes
out of glomerular
capillaries and into
the capsular space

Renal System Disorders

Bladder cancer
Kidney cancer
Kidney stone
