Thanksgiving Day

ThanksGiving Day

The ThanksGiving Day is a national holiday celebrated on the

fourth Thursday of November, in primarily in the United
States and Canada as a day of giving thanks for the blessing
of the harvest and of the preceding year.

What do people do?

Thanksgiving Day is traditionally a day for families and

friends to get together for a special meal.
The meal often includes a turkey, stuffing, potatoes,
cranberry sauce, gravy, pumpkin pie, and vegetables.
Thanksgiving Day is a time for many people to give thanks
for what they have.

What do people do?

Thanksgiving Day parades are held in some cities and towns

on or around Thanksgiving Day. Some parades or festivities
also mark the opening of the Christmas shopping season.
Some people have a four-day weekend so it is a popular time
for trips and to visit family and friends.

Why it is celebrated

The holiday dates back to 1621, the year after the Puritans
arrived in Massachusetts, determined to practice their
dissenting religion without interference. After a rough winter,
in which about half of them died, they turned for help to
neighboring Indians, who taught them how to plant corn and
other crops. The next fall's bountiful harvest inspired the
Pilgrims to give thanks by holding a feast.

Why it is celebrated

The Thanksgiving feast became a national tradition - not only

because so many other Americans have found prosperity but
also because the Pilgrims' sacrifices for their freedom still
captivate the imagination.
