MOVEMENTS OF THE EARTH

Question/Answers
Q-1) What is the theory of the
continental drift?
Ans-1)
1. Alfred Wegener first proposed
the Theory of Continental Drift.
2. He believed that 225 million
years ago, there was only one big
super continent, Pangaea.
3. The Pangaea broke up at some
point of time and the parts began
moving away.
4. At first there were two
landmasses- Laurasia and
Gondwanaland- with the Tethys
Sea in between.
5. The blocks of land kept moving
till they reached the present
position.

6. So, this was how our

continents were formed and the
oceans opened up in between.

Q-2) Write an account of the plate

tectonics theory?
Ans-2)
1. It was not the continents that
moved but it was the plates that
lie below the continents.
2. Plate tectonics is the theory
which explains how the
continental plates move
continuously along each other,
against each other, away from
each other.
3. Our continents sit on these
plates and when they move the
continents move with them.
4. It explains how the continents
drifted.

5. It also explains why and how

earthquakes and volcanoes are
caused, and how mountain and
ocean trenches are formed.

Q-3) what is the difference between

Endogenic and Exogenic
movements of the Earth?
Ans-3)
Endogenic
movements
Are those
movements that
take place under
the surface of the
earth, such as
plate movements
and the resulting

Exogenic
movements
Are those
movements that
occur that on the
surface of the
earth, such as
the action of
wind, water and

earthquakes and
volcanoes?
