Gold rush currency

1. In 1851 people used pounds and shillings


and pence! 20 shillings is 1 pound.
2. Today 1 shilling is $2.25 but 1 pound is
$45!
3. Miners had to pay 30 shillings for a mining
license. Today 30 shillings is $28.25.
4. Unofficial coins were made in the gold rush in 1851.
5. Traders Tokens were made as a replacement because of the
coin shortage.

Extra information
Some people wanted to make gold coins in Adelaide, 1852, but
were rejected by the British after one pound pieces were found.
Australia's first official coin design was in Sydney, found in
1855. It produced gold coins with an original design. It had
"Sydney Mint, Australia, One Sovereign" on one side and Queen
Victoria on the other, or "Sydney Mint, Australia, Half
Sovereign", before starting in 1870 to mint gold coins of British
design. One gold sovereign equaled 1.
