Educational Philosophy

There is no experience more

transformative than the
process of learning.
Art applies not only to projects in the art room, but all areas of life. Art is used everywhere
around us, in the forms of media, scientific readings, and business presentations; even the
colors of our sports teams are chosen with an artful eye. To utilize the power of art students
must understand the following:

The elements of art; including: color, line, shape, texture and form

The methods of art and art materials

Art from a historical, cultural and aesthetic perspective

The future of art and their place within that future

How art to add depth and breath to cross curricular exploration

Arts importance and impact in their everyday lives

To achieve the goals I use multiple pedagogical methods, for example:

My pedagogy allows for guided exploration. Within the course of a lesson a

student can explore their own relationship to the materials and methods.

I incorporate personalization and differentiation. It is important to understand

each student as an individual with his or her own needs and values. I make
accommodations as needed so each learner can be supported and challenged.

Like John Dewey, who suggested that knowledge evolves though and should
be used as a tool in problem solving, I feel students should look to art as a way
to test ideas. The experimentation and exploration of new materials and
artistic principals can be effectively taught though this problem-solving
philosophy.

The tools and information a child learns in other curricular areas can be put into
action in their artwork. This further reinforces both areas of knowledge while
giving the child greater comprehension.
