Air NZ codeshare with Air India beats

Delhi landing restrictions
Pattrick Smellie

ir New Zealand will

increase its ability to
land passengers from
New Zealand in the Indian
capital, New Delhi, following
the announcement of a new
codesharing agreement between
the national carrier and Air India.
Improved air links have long
been a priority for advocates
of stronger business and trade
links between the two countries,
which are in the early stages
of negotiating a free trade
agreement.
An
existing
codeshare
arrangement with Singapore
Airlines and Air NZ allows
connections
to
Indian
destinations through direct flights
from Auckland and Christchurch
to Singapore and onwards to
India, but Indian authorities are
understood to have been slow to
open up additional landing rights
for SIA to the Indias capital city.

By codesharing with Air India,

which flies to Delhi from Sydney
and Melbourne, Air NZ will be
able to circumvent the current
bottleneck.
In a statement to BusinessDesk,
Air NZ said: In addition to the
Singapore alliance, which offers

unparalleled connectivity to a
range of South East Asia ports,
Air Indias connectivity through
multiple gateways, particularly
through
its
Sydney
and
Melbourne to New Delhi services,
offer customers further choice to
best suit their travel needs.

Air NZ, Air India and SIA are

all members of the Star Alliance
network and the new Air India
codeshare will provide additional
access to a range of Indian cities.
An air services agreement (ASA)
between India and New Zealand in
2006, updated in 2008, allows for

direct flights between Auckland

and Indias largest commercial
centre of Mumbai, but no such
service has started, according to
the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
and Trade website.
In March, Transport Minister
Simon Bridges said at an IndiaNew Zealand investment summit
in Auckland that he hoped to
negotiate a fresh ASA with India.
The codeshare agreement was
signed at the International Air
Transport Association annual
meeting in Miami by Air NZ chief
executive Christopher Luxon and
Air India chairman and managing
director Rohit Nandan.
The sheer size of India and its
growing middle class make it an
aviation force that will positively
impact
international
traffic
flows, Luxon said in a statement.
Close to 90,000 people currently
travel between India and New
Zealand every year and this
number is growing.

Increasing retail prices The week long opening ceremony

of internet a concern
of Shri Ram Mandir
Red

Commerce Commission
monitoring
report
released
this
week
underlines how high charges for
wholesale broadband are pushing
up the retail price of internet for
New Zealand consumers.
The study is an annual look
at the state of the countrys
telecommunications
markets
and highlights that while there
is healthy competition and price
reductions at the retail level,
with internationally competitive
prices for entry-level and naked
plans, prices for a number of New
Zealands broadband packages
are still higher than comparable
countries.
Retail prices have been
reducing during the past few
years due to strong competition
in the marketplace, but wholesale
charges are already high and
the Commerce Commission is
looking to push them up even
higher, says Spark New Zealand
General Manager Corporate
Relations Andrew Pirie.
This is putting upward
pressure on prices and means
New Zealands internet isnt as
affordable as it could be. Around
half of the average customers
bill goes to paying the wholesale
charges, meaning they have a big
impact on what people pay.
Last month Spark New
Zealand launched the Be Counted
campaign to help explain to

New Zealanders what makes

up the cost of their broadband,
and to give them an easy way of
sending a submission into the
Commission asking it to reduce
wholesale charges for broadband.
To date, more than 50,000 people
have visited the becounted.org.nz
website and sent in a submission
asking the Commission to reduce
charges.
This report reinforces that
the Commerce Commission had
the right idea when it initially
proposed to reduce wholesale
broadband charges, says Mr
Pirie.
New Zealanders are waking
up to the fact that while we have a
healthy competitive retail market
for telecommunications, we face
unfair wholesale charges that
push up the price of connectivity.
Our research shows that New
Zealands wholesale broadband
charges are up to 80 percent
higher than comparable countries,
which
equates
to
around
$180 more per year for every
internet and landline customer.
If New Zealands wholesale
charges were more in line with the
rest of the world, our performance
in studies such as this would look
a lot better.
The Commerce Commission
will shortly make a decision that
will have a big impact on how
people pay to use the internet or
landline.

Another broad daylight

burglary perplexes residents

Red

Black

Orange

Rizwan Mohammad

broad day light burglary has again

raised concerns for the safety and
security of residents in Auckland.
Ajay has been working at a convenience
store in Mt Roskill and stays in a rented
house on Fruitvale Road in New Lynn.
Ajay lives with his wife, eight year old
daughter and a young working male. This
is the second time since December that this
address has been targeted. It was on the
4th of June, Thursday between 1 pm and 3
pm, that this theft is reported to have taken
place. The burglars entered the house by
breaking the door lock, took a laptop placed
in the dining room, entered the bedroom
and opened every possible cabinet and
sifted through suitcases.
The items reported missing were gold
jewellery worth $1000 to $1200, $1200
cash in Indian currency, some household
items and boxes from the bedroom.
None of the suitcases are now usable
since the burglars broke opened and tore
them from inside too says Ajay.
When Ajays wife arrived home after
picking her daughter from school, she saw
the door open and the whole house ravaged.
The whole bedroom was trampled like
anything, cupboard and drawers wide open,
the suitcases upside down, clothes thrown,
documents lying on the floor, the whole
house was in a mess, added Ajays wife.

After listening to the news Ajay drove

back to his house from the store and called
the police. The reponse he received from
111 was that there was no one around to
respond to the report immediately and
they could log a complaint. There was no
prompt action taken by the police, no one
from the authorities came to the scene and
the complaint number too was given the
next day when I called up and asked for an
update added Ajay.
I am not satisfied by the way the police
reacted. We work so hard day and night,
trying to save every penny, but when such
things happen and the delay in action really
is really upsetting. mentions Ajays wife.
A month back Ajays car was stolen from
his drive way but was found in Mt Roskill 3
days later, after he paid $300 to get it back
from Otahuhu yard.
Two weeks back two similar burglaries
were reported in Rimu Street and Maioro
Street. The residents are worried about
their safety with the rise in the number
of thefts in the central areas of Auckland.
Most of these houses are rented and do not
have any alarms or security doors.
A month ago two thefts were reported in
two convenience stores in Henderson and
in Mt. Roskill, that were covered by Indian
Weekender, issue dated May 22, 2015. No
progress has been updated by the police yet
in either of the two cases.

Managing your insurance

portfolio
Lalit Bajaj

}} What are the risks you face in

achieving your lifes goals?
}} How do you quantify those
risks?
}} How do you manage those
risks with the help of insurance
products?
}} A
clear
and
concise
understanding
of
various
insurance products
}} How to choose an adviser with
good understanding of the
advisory process?
It is important that once you
have decided to buy insurance there
should not be any confusion about
the products you have bought. Here
is a simple four-step guide to tackle
all the above issues:
Select the Insurance Advisor
Selling insurance, as you are
aware, can be very remunerative.
Not surprisingly, the advice is
often biased in favour of insurance
products that garner the highest
commissions. So you have to be

Red

your long-term financial goals and

identify the risks that may prevent
you from achieving those goals.

irst of all, lets face it,

Insurance of any kind
is not a straight forward
product and sometimes beyond
the understanding for a common
man. In our experience over the
years, following issues have been
identified which can be daunting for
a consumer of insurance products:

NZs human rights

reputation at risk

Quantify your Needs

really sure that your insurance

advisor is honest and competent. If
you cant ascertain this easily, insist
on references whenever possible.
Check
his
recommendations
by understanding why he is
recommending one insurance plan
over another. And if he is making
claims that seem outlandish to
you, dont hesitate to either take it
down in writing from him or get
a confirmation from a company
official.
Identify your Needs
Your needs may not be just shortterm, you should identify your
long-term needs as well. It is a fact of
insurance you may not get it when
you need it. Your health may change
and insurance companies may
exclude or charge extra premium
for your pre-existing medical
conditions. It is certainly a difficult
task trying to predict your future
state of health. You must identify

Once you have decided why

you need insurance, the next step
is to calculate how much cover is
sufficient to match current and
future needs. The experts call it
Human Life Value, or how much is
the economic value of a human life.
Your Insurance Advisor should be
able to provide a good estimate of
your economic value.
Conduct Regular Reviews
Like all other long-term activities,
you must monitor your insurance
portfolio closely to ensure that
you are on track to achieve your
objectives. If there is a discernible
upward revision, then your existing
life cover may not prove sufficient
and you may have to consider taking
additional cover. The solution to this
problem is to opt for a slightly higher
cover at the outset; since pure risk
plans are relatively cheap, it will not
prove to be expensive.
By now you would have realised
that managing your insurance
portfolio involves taking decisions,
implementing them and monitoring
the results closely.

report on the status of

human rights in New
Zealand says serious fault
lines are developing and that the
countrys reputation as a global
leader is at risk.
A three-year study of the six
major human rights treaties New
Zealand has signed, shows were
better at talking about human
rights than walking the talk and
implementing our promises made
internationally, says Auckland
University of Technologys Professor
Judy McGregor, co-author of Fault
lines: Human rights in New Zealand.
The detailed research shows
were slipping behind in areas such
as child poverty, gender equality,
systemic disadvantage of Mori,
and the rights of disabled people to
challenge the State.
For example, we keep telling the
United Nations we were the first to
grant women the vote, but we still
dont have equal pay for women
or pay equity for carers. Nor do we
have adequate paid parental leave,
and we continue to suffer completely
unacceptable levels of violence
against women. We say how good
we are, but the reality is were in
trouble.
Funded by the New Zealand Law
Foundation, Fault lines was written
by Professor McGregor, human
rights lawyer Sylvia Bell and Waikato
Universitys Professor Margaret

Black

Orange

Wilson. Each has significant

practical experience of working in
human rights.
Urgent action needed
The report suggests New Zealand
needs to take urgent remedial action
to retain its point of difference as a
human rights leader. It is also critical
of the level of understanding of
Members of Parliament on human
rights treaty obligations.
In addition, the report says New
Zealanders strong belief that we are
good at human rights has blinded us
to the fact that we are falling behind
other countries in implementing
economic, social and cultural rights
on the ground, despite our treaty
obligations.
Recommendations
It suggests 13 recommendations
to help New Zealand retain
human rights leadership including
a comprehensive rewrite of
human rights legislation, a new
parliamentary select committee to
deal with human rights, and the
urgent repeal of non-human rights
compliant legislation to reinstate
the rights of all New Zealanders to
complain about discrimination.
The recommendations also
suggest a new, more proactive
role for the Mori Affairs Select
Committee in monitoring New
Zealands response to the United
Nations about closing the inequality
gaps.

Business Transformation onFasttrack

evenue Minister Todd

McClay has welcomed the
announcement of Fast
Enterprises as Inland Revenues
preferred software partner to
support a modernised, simplified
tax system for New Zealand.
Mr McClay said that a
modernised tax administration
system, enabled by the new
software, would significantly
boost the Governments ability
to support flourishing businesses
in New Zealand and make tax
compliance less costly and time
consuming for all New Zealanders.
Key
individuals
from
Fast Enterprises were also
instrumental in building our
original software, FIRST, and that
system has performed well for
more than twenty five years.
This will also bring the time
frame down from ten years to
under eight and see the cost lower
to near the bottom end of the

forecast - at around $1.3 billion.

I will be working with Inland
Revenue to find further efficiencies
and expect the cost could be as low
as $1 billion, says Mr McClay.
An increasing number of
New Zealand companies are also
involved in critical components of
the transformation process.
These
include
Tenzings
contract for data profiling and
DeloitteAsparona, which has been
contracted to replace the FIRST
integration layer and Assurity,
which provides testing services.
In addition Xero, MYOB and
other software providers are
working with Inland Revenue
to simplify processes for small
businesses.
The
sheer
scale
and
importance of this programme
means we will source expertise
both locally and internationally,
says Mr McClay.

Manufacturing
Sales fall by
$1.7 billion

ew Zealandsfall in
manufacturing sales is
the largest in the past 5
years and that is in spite of volumes
of sales increasing, according to
David Clark, Labours Economic
Development spokesperson.
Given stark warning by the
OECD that the Governments
complacency is putting the health
of the economy at risk from a
further downturn in commodity
prices, this $1.7 billion fall is
a further indictment of the
Governments lack of vision.
They have bet everything
oncommodity processing at
the expense of value-added
exports, and with the Survey of
Manufacturings report showing
that commodity prices are falling
through the floor we are left with
nothing to bank on.
Even if you exclude the
impact of falls in dairying and
meat over the last four quarters,
manufacturing sales have fallen
by 1.2 percent this year.
The Government must stop
blaming farmers and broaden the
base of the New Zealand economy
to escape the narrow reliance on
dairying.
These figures show how
foolish the Government was in its
decision to focus on volume over
value in exports. Its like a rugby
coach saying possession is more
important than points on the
board, says David Clark.

It is time to stop
elder abuse

Red

ge Concern needs help stopping elder

abuse in our communities.
Age Concern New Zealand Chief
Executive Robyn Scott says that although Age
Concern receives 2,000 referrals of elder abuse
every year, including financial, psychological,
physical abuse, there is still hope that we can
all make a difference and improve the lives of
older New Zealanders.
Age Concerns elder abuse and neglect
prevention (EANP) teams work closely with
older people and their families to resolve
issues of abuse and ensure it does not reoccur.
Age Concern also works in communities
to educate people about the signs and effects
of abuse to help prevent it from happening
and how to challenge disrespectful attitudes
towards older people.
Mrs. Scott says that we can challenge
disrespectful attitudes towards older people,
by promoting respect.
Love and cherish your older relatives,
respect and honour their wisdom, include
them in your plans and social activities,
encourage them to make their own decisions
and let them set their own pace.
Mrs. Scott says that we all need to keep an
eye out for elder abuse in our communities.
Dont let fear of meddling in someone elses
business stop you from voicing your concern. It
is time to stop elder abuse in our communities
and if we all pull together we can achieve this.
Age Concern is raising awareness of
elder abuse during Elder Abuse Awareness
WeekJune 15-22which begins on World Elder
Abuse Awareness DayJune 15.

Raising awareness around this issue is

imperative. EANP services receive an average
of eight calls per day about older people
suspected of being abused or neglected. In
three quarters of these cases, abuse or neglect
is confirmed. In New Zealand the most
commonly reported types are financial abuse
and psychological abuse.
We know that s just the tip of the iceberg.
But it doesnt have to be this way. The more
people understand about elder abuse and what
they can do to stop it, the better.
Some people think that because someone
is old it doesnt matter what happens to them
anymore or they dont need money to spend.
They make decisions for the older person
without even asking them what it is they want.
Or, they ridicule them about the decisions
they do make. Sometimes, they pressure older
people into doing things they dont really want
to do like giving a loan, selling their house or
letting a family member move in with them for
free. Attitudes like these show a lack of respect
for the older person, for their quality of life and
for their needs.
Three quarters of elder abuse and neglect
in New Zealand occurs at the hands of family
members. About half of abusers are adult
children and about half of the abused elders
are over 80-years-old.

Budget 2015: Investing in the future of

young New Zealanders
Kanwaljit Bakshi
National List MP

nvesting in education means investing

in the future of Kiwi children.
Budget 2015 will take total spending

on early childhood (ECE), primary, and

secondary education to $10.8 billion in
2015/16, and provide $113 million more
over four years for tertiary education.
This includes $74.9 million more for
ECE over the next four years so more

children will be able to attend ECE from

an earlier age, for more hours. Over the
past four years, the number of children
participating in ECE has risen almost 7 per
cent.
In our schools, the proportion of
18-year-olds achieving NCEA Level 2 has
risen from 68 per cent to an estimated
81 per cent since 2008. These are great
results, but we know we can always do
more.
National wants to help those lagging
behind, especially Mori and Pasifika
children, children from poorer families,
and children with special education needs.
More than $4 million will enable the
Count Me In programme to support
about 2,000 Mori and Pasifika 16 to

18-year-olds who have left school, to reengage with education or begin vocational
training, and help the Year 9 Plus trial
assign educational champions to the most
vulnerable students.
For students with special needs, a strong
education increases the chance of them
becoming more independent and better
able to participate in, and contribute to,
their community.
So were investing an extra $62.9 million
of operating funding over the next four
years to better help children with special
education needs to learn and achieve.
Part of this investment is for extra
in-class teachers aide support for 1,500
students who have special education
needs such as dyslexia, autism spectrum

disorder, or attention deficit hyperactivity

disorder, but who dont qualify for Ongoing
Resource Scheme (ORS) support. ORS will
receive more funding to support about
500 extra students, meaning about 9,000
children with the highest special education
needs will be supported by the scheme.
Were also increasing schools funding
grants. And, given the success of Trades
Academies, about 300 extra places will be
added each year for the next four years to
help students achieve NCEA Level 2 while
gaining industry-specific skills.
Ensuring every child gets a good
education is one of the most important
things National can do to raise living
standards, and build a more competitive
and productive economy.

Lets not forget the tragedy in Nepal

Phil Goff
Labour MP

n April 25, Nepal suffered its worst

earthquake in more than 80 years.
The initial earthquake registered
7.8, took around 8,000 lives and injured
over 23,000. More died and were injured in
subsequent aftershocks.
International aid agencies estimate that
millions were made homeless, the majority of
whom were children.
Much of Nepals ancient cultural
heritage has been lost and its economy and
infrastructure damaged. For one of the worlds
poorest nations, the costs have been huge.

Momentarily, while it was in the media

spotlight, the eyes of the world were on Nepal.
The search and rescue and recovery operations
were well publicised for a short while, but
media attention has now moved elsewhere.
However, the tragedy, the costs and the
need for ongoing international aid remain and
it is important that we do not forget the plight
of the Nepalese and the assistance they require.
Sixty-two years ago, the bond between our
two nations was forged when Ed Hillary and
Tenzing Norgay became the first two people to
conquer Mt Everest and stand on the roof of
the world.
Ed Hillary received a knighthood and fame
that lasted his entire lifetime. But he was much
more than a resilient and able mountaineer.
He saw, at first hand, the needs of the
Nepalese people and time and again he
returned to Nepal to deliver funds and
assistance to build school and hospitals. This
decency and desire to help his fellow human

beings who were less fortunate is what made

him a truly great man.
New Zealand today needs to follow his
example and reach out to help the people
of Nepal at their time of need. As a country,
we have donated $2 million and sent Urban
Search and Rescue and earthquake engineers
to help.
NGOs like World Vision, Oxfam and Red
Cross have also contributed. There is, however,
more that we can and should do.
Facing economic costs of more than $10
billion and with the urgent need to alleviate
the hardship the Nepalese people are facing,
our help so far is a drop in the bucket of what
is needed.
On Saturday night, I welcomed the chance
to contribute to a benefit concert at Mt Roskill
Intermediate School to raise more money for
Nepal. Around 200 people attended, mainly
from the Indian community, to make a
contribution and to enjoy the concert.

Congratulations to Bhartiya Samaj, Roopa

Aur Aap and Humm FM who, together with
Creation Group NZ, organised and promoted
the concert. Well done too to the Kiwi Indian
performers who contributed their time.
As well as being for a very good cause, the
concert was a great showcase of the huge talent
within New Zealands Indian community.
The performers songs and dancing were
spirited and professional.
When New Zealand suffered its major
earthquakes in Christchurch, the assistance
that friends overseas provided was really
important and has not been forgotten. We are
a developed country but we still needed and
benefitted from that help.
It is even more important that poor families
in a less developed country like Nepal get the
help they need from friends like New Zealand
to survive and recover from the natural
disaster that they have suffered. After all,
we are all one family.

Dairy farming price crisis needs action now

Winston Peters
NZ First leader

ew Zealand First is deeply

concerned for farmers and
sharemilkers and the economy.
We rely on export wealth from farms so
the present decline in dairy prices is a real
concern to all of us.
We are concerned that the five-year lows
for dairy prices and government inaction
may cost many in this generation of dairy
farmers.
Last week was the sixth decline since
mid-March in prices. The price of whole
milk powder, which largely determines

Fonterras payout to farmers, fell 3.1

percent to US$2,309 a tonne. All other
products decreased in price.
Generations of farmers are at risk.
The pressure will increase because of
lingering effects of our high dollar and an
international milk glut caused by global
issues and overproduction.
The Reserve Bank Governor should have
cut the Official Cash Rate a long time ago to
drop interest rates and the dollar.
When New Zealand takes up the
presidency of the United Nations Security
Council next month, we should prioritise
Russia and Ukraine to sort out the sanctions
contributing to the milk glut.
To help keep dairy farmers on the land
New Zealand First has prepared legislation
called the Receiverships (Agricultural Debt
Mediation) Amendment Bill.
When farms get into trouble, too often

the banks take the easy option by placing

them into receivership and putting the
farm on the market. To get the maximum
return the banks and the receivers go for
the biggest foreign cheque book as they did
with the Crafar farms. They took over more
than $7 million in fees.
In these situations the receiver wins, the
foreign-owned bank wins and the foreign
buyer wins. The losers are the Kiwi farmers
and their families. It amounts to yet another
transfer of wealth away from our local
communities.
New Zealand is awash with foreign
money and we are losing key assets as well.
At least 1200 farms are at risk and we do
not know how brutal the banks will be with
those farmers but we know the pattern.
Our Bill is about correcting the power
imbalance between a farmer and the
banker. It is a process that will require the

banks to have their facts and advice right

by requiring mediation before receivership
can commence.
. We need to own our own financial
institutions and we need our superannuation
funds to become available to invest in the
land even if just to keep it in New Zealand
hands. State farms can be successfully
managed until other arrangements are
made such as lease or sale to local interests.
After all who is running Crafar Farms for
its Chinese owners? None other than Land
Corp, a taxpayer owned enterprise.
The thought of Kiwi families being
forced off the land while receivers and
foreign buyers make a killing should force
some action from Parliament. This is not
the time for MPS to pose for selfies or waffle
on about a market economy. This is about
survival, the protection of our farming
communities and the future of our country.

community received a timely boost
after the New Zealand High Commissioner,
Mark Ramsden, gave two new computer sets
and six laptops at their Suva branch office.
FENC Fiji national co-ordinator Joape

Government for their assistance and kind
donations, Mr Kuinikoro said.
FENC Fiji board chairman Father

make their work easier in providing services
and assistance to needy children.
Mr Ramsden said the items were worth

The Internet Live Stat website recorded
a total of 325,717 internet users in Fiji last

increase compared with 2013.
According to the website the eight per

Yet on this same website, it states that
Fijis internet usage is rated at 0.01 per cent
among three billion internet users in the
world. It also states that 36.72 per cent of

The website keeps a live automated count

The Vodafone Fijian U20 coach made the comment at

FIFA U20 World Cup in New Zealand, winning one and
losing three pool matches.
This is something Fiji should be proud of,Farina said.
New Zealand took 10 years to win their first U20 WC
match while the Fijians did it in their first outing.
Its amazing after they beat a team from CONCACAF
(North America, Central America, and the Caribbean
Football Association). Everyone was waiting to see Fiji being
embarrassed as Tahiti was six years ago, but Fiji shocked the
world. It is hard to play three games against top teams in
seven days especially for the island boys.
Fiji lost 1-8 to Germany, 0-3 Uzbekistan and beat
Honduras 3-0. Farina said he will be presenting his report to
Fiji FA this week before returning to Brisbane.

My philosophy is that not only are you

Anything but funny

Before water generates steam, it must register two hundred and twelve degrees
of heat. Two hundred degrees will not do it; two hundred and ten will not do it.
The water must boil before it will generate enough steam to move an engine,

to run a train. Lukewarm water will not run anything.

A great many people are trying to move their life trains with lukewarm wateror
water that is almost boilingand they are wondering why they are stalled, why they
cannot get ahead. They are trying to run a boiler with two hundred or two hundred
and ten degrees of heat, and they cannot understand why they do not get anywhere.
Lukewarmness in his work stands in the same relation to mans achievement
as lukewarm water does to the locomotive boiler. No man can hope to accomplish
anything great in this world until he throws his whole soul, flings his force to his
whole life, into it.
Orison Swett Mardenfrom He Can Who Thinks He Can
I just love this steam engine-powered era wisdom.
In the end it comes down to if you have a mere lukewarm desire to live an
extraordinary life? Or are you willing to step it up just a little more to achieve
outstanding results?
I will leave this here as food for thought for our readers as this can translate
differently to each one of us, but can surely inspire.
This is a significant week and I want to write about two main reasons that make
this week significant for me. The first is that this is the Mens Health Week (8th
to 15th June). Men in general ignore their own health, specially the state of their
mental health. Men suffering from depression sometimes struggle to ask for help
as this may be perceived as a sign of weakness. Statistics show that 1 in 8 men will
suffer from depression or anxiety during their lifetime. Of greater concern is the
fact that of the 549 suicides reported in New Zealand in 2014, 75% of those who
took their own lives were men. Asking for help or support should be seen as a sign
of strength and not weakness. It takes a strong man to admit that he needs help. So,
as a man, I want to encourage all men out there to take responsibility for our health
and get the help we need, for the sake of our families and our loved ones. We owe it
not just to them but to ourselves as well.
The second reason that makes this week significant is that 15th June is Purple
Ribbon Day a day to stop elder abuse. It is the law of nature that youth is always
followed by old age. Those who stand tall and drunk on youth today, will have no
choice but to move into old age tomorrow. Yet, we often forget this and also the fact
that our today is built on the strong shoulders of those who spent their youth trying
to build our today. So, lets cherish the senior members of our communities and
grant them the respect and love that they truly deserve. Lets say NO to elder abuse!
There have been interesting other happenings and our current issue is a potpourri
of news that is local and also from around the world.
Until next time.

From history: Indian soldiers in the

t is unfortunate that in
this centennial year of
remembrance we rarely
remember the sufferings and
sacrifice of the Indian soldiers
who went to Europe to fight for
the British Empire in the First
World War. These Indian soldiers
were trained soldiers, but they
were not trained and equipped for
the kind of warfare and climate
they experienced in Europe. So in
these combat zones they suffered
immensely and the letters they
wrote back home described
vividly the kind of discomfort they
endured. Their first encounter
was with the bitter cold of France,
and it was not a happy experience.
Their sense of desperation was
evident in the quotes given below
from their letters:
1. The war is a calamity on
three worlds and has caused me
to cross the seas and live here.
The cold is so great that it cannot
be described. Snow falls day and
night and covers the ground to
a depth of two feet. We have not
seen the sun for four months.

that he has heard the prayer of
these sinners and rescued them
from the cold of France. [Naiz
Khan to Dhaman Khan]
But those who were transferred
from France were not very lucky
either, as they were redeployed

in the Mesopotamian campaign

in 1917. Here they had to endure
long marches in the scorhing heat
of the Middle East. And then there
was the outbreak of scurvy and
their distress was compounded
by awful lack of medical facilities.
And it was not just adverse climate
and disease they were suffering
from. Their normal life, religious
practices, food habits and ritual
restrictions were all being severely
compromised. As one Muslim
soldier wrote from France:
For the last two years I have
abstained
from
everything
unlawful. I have not touched
meat for two years I have not
eaten any bakers bread nor have I
drunk any milk. Send this letter to
Moulvi Sahib, and ask what is laid
down in the law. [Sowar Yakub
Khan to Abdul Jabbar Khan]
We also have photographs
showing Indian soldiers both
Hindus and Sikhs - cooking their
own meals in the camp, after a
long day at the trenches. And this
was not the end of their story of
privation. More about that later.

Bridging the cultural barrier

Paula Ray

nlike my earlier columns,

today I am going to
introduce you to one of
those voices that seek to facilitate
a union of the ethnic Indian
community with the mainstream.
Several other social workers are
also on the same mission, but
Shyam Grover, Social Worker
in Schools (SWIS) employed by
Family Works Northern, begins
his mission at the school level.
Schools are, after all, one of the
primary nodes of contact for a
newly-arrived immigrant.
The Department of Labour
Migration Trends Key Indicators
Report shows India as the main
supplier of skilled migrants to
New Zealand,between July and
December 2014. This increase
in Indian migration means
thiscommunity may require
support as they adjust to their
new life. Through Grover, the

often isolated South Asian

migrant families facing
cultural and language
barriers, are finding their
voice.
Deputy
Principal
of Manurewa Central
School, Janice Lindsay,
says, migrant Indian
families
approach
Grover for advice on a
variety of issues such as
understanding the New
Zealand education system,
developing
parenting
skills,
strengthening
family relationships and
dealing with abuse.
Originally from New
Delhi, in India, but having
lived in New Zealand for
the last 20 years, Grover set
up Chat and Chai, a monthly
parenting and support group for
parents, grandparents and their
extended families. Chat and Chai

does Grover ever feel segregated

because he belongs to a nonmainstream community? He
replies, Yes, because of the
language problem. There is a
feeling of stigma and shame
attached if you report any
injustice to authorities, so many
people bear injustice in silence.

language barriers,

people and gives them a safe place

to ask questions and discuss tough
issues, says Grover.
They are here in isolation.
Some migrants can live in New
Zealand for more than 10 years
and have not made friends, he
says. We work with them to build
their confidence and educate
them. The majority of people dont
know where to find resources.
They dont know what is support
is available. We want to inform the
community about the resources
and networks available to them.
By helping them build
networks
within
their
communities, social workers
like Grover are providing these
migrant families with a platform
to raise their voice.
In spite of an understanding
of how the NZ system works,

Often, they lack the knowledge

of what community resources
are available and they dont have
a local contact, from their own
community, who they can trust
and get confidential advice.
At the crossroads of culture,
the concerned authorities need
to decide how to overcome
these barriers to assimilate the
various communities within the
multicultural nation it wishes to
uphold.

Questions that Grover is

often asked:
}} I have been in New Zealand
for the last 10 years and have
no friends. How can I make
friends?
}} I do not know how to handle
children at home (questions
about discipline).
}} We do not know where to take
children during school break.
Whats the best way to spend
quality time with children?
}} My husband is an alcoholic
and I do not know what to do.
What kind of help can I avail
of?
}} My husband hits my children
and shouts at me. I am sick of
that and do not know where
to go for help.
}} I want to know how to develop
a good relationship with my
childrens school.
}} I cannot speak English at all
and want help to liaise with
my childrens teacher (or
school).
}} I am having relationship
problems with my husband/
wife. What kind of help can I
avail of?

People retain hope in Modi, but times

running out
Amulya Ganguli

o smart cities, no bullet trains, no

spike in employment, no visible
improvement in infrastructure,
continuing logjam over bills in parliament,
carping by in-house critics. Even then, few
will say that Narendra Modi will lose if the
elections are held in the near future.
The reason is, first, the realisation that
one year is not a long enough to give a
definitive judgment on the performance
of a government, especially when it is
emerging from the black hole of the failures
of its predecessor.
Secondly, it is also realised that Modi
may have been unable to anticipate the
mischief-making potential of some of the
trouble-makers, including those within the
Sangh parivar.
It is the appreciation of these difficulties
by the general public which explains why
he has passed muster in an opinion poll
whereas if the opposition parties are to
be believed, his government has failed
miserably.
However, it is undeniable that since
some of the high expectations with which
Modi assumed office have begun to be
eroded, he cannot allow the present sense

of drift to continue. Unless there is a

perceptible upturn in the economy in the
next 12 months, the warning bells will
begin to ring.
Hindsight suggests that Modi indulged
in too much hyperbole during the
election campaign. The bombast worked
satisfactorily against the dismal backdrop
of the virtually non-performing and scamridden Manmohan Singh government.
But, Modis spin doctors evidently did
not realise that raising expectations too
high - for instance, on the recovery of black
money - carries the risk of an equally big
disappointment if the hopes are not met.
The risk is all the greater because the
Bharatiya Janata Partys (BJP) main base
of support at present is the notoriously
impatient middle class which believes in
quick results.
It was this class which gave the Congress
200-plus seats in 2009 on the basis of
high growth rates (although the partys
socialists ascribed the good showing to its
populism) and then brought it down with
a crash to 44 seats when the growth rates
tumbled.
The same fate can await Modi unless he
pushes the economic reforms with much
greater vigour than at present.
As may be expected, Modis tenure has

been marked by a mixture of good and bad

luck. Even as he benefitted from the falling
oil prices and low inflation, unseasonal
rain aggravated the distress of farmers.
But, in political terms, the government
has been a victim of what can be deemed
an exceptional case of misfortune since
its principal opponent, the Congress, has
decided to adopt an unabashedly cussed
attitude.
As much is evident from the virtual
u-turn it has taken on its own economic
agenda, introduced in 1991, by following
what finance minister Arun Jaitley has
called an anti-growth line which, he says, is
to the left of Marx.
As a result, crucial bills such as the
Goods and Services Tax (GST) have been
held up. But, the worst obstructionism
engineered by the Congress relates to the
land acquisition law, which constitutes
a key feature of the governments
development blueprint.
Unless the law is amended, the
government will be unable to implement
its make in India plans which aim at
making the country a manufacturing hub.
However, it is not the Congress alone
which is to blame for the stalemate. No
less guilty are saffron outfits like the
protectionist Swadeshi Jagran Manch

Orange

(SJM) and the anti-reforms Bharatiya

Mazdoor Sangh (BMS).
Modi, therefore, is battling not only the
anti-development groups cutting across
party lines, but also a widely prevalent
mindset which is deeply suspicious of the
private sector and pro-market policies.
Arguably, he has been unable to gauge
the intensity of the opposition to capitalist
endeavours even within the saffron camp
though he is one of its key members.
The reason perhaps is that he never
pushed this line as energetically as he is
now trying to do on a national scale. If his
efforts in this direction in Gujarat were not
opposed as stoutly as the SJM, the BMS
and the Bharatiya Kisan Sangh (BKS) are
doing now, it was because the pro-business
policies were confined to a state.
Modis miscalculation has been that he
did not prepare these groups about what he
intends to do on an all-India scale.
It is only belatedly that he seems to
have sought the help of the Rashtriya
Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) to tame the
nay-sayers.
Earlier, the RSS had backed off on the
Ram temple issue, but had advised the BJP
to listen to the saffron organisations on the
reforms.

Congress slams
Modi over
despite being a
woman remark

he Congress has accused

Prime Minister Narendra
Modi of playing partisan
politics in Bangladesh and
targeted him over his remarks
that Bangladesh Prime Minister
Sheikh Hasina has resolved to
fight terrorism with zero tolerance
despite being a woman.

Congress leader Anand Sharma

said Modi thought he was praising
the Bangladeshi leader with his
remarks but it was not the way
respect is shown to a woman.
Modi paid a two-day visit to
Bangladesh on June 13-14.
Sharma said South Asian
countries had many woman
leaders including Indira Gandhi.
Sheikh Hasina is the prime
minister of her country. Does he
(Modi) want to say that ladies
cannot take strong decisions? Does
it mean that the prime minister
needed to give a certificate to
her? The big brother attitude, the
patronising attitude of the prime
minister cannot be called smart
diplomacy, he said.
Taking digs at Modi, the
Congress leader accused him of
trying to rewrite history by not
recalling the contribution of
Indira Gandhi who was the prime
minister during the 1971 IndiaPakistan war which led to the
emergence of Bangladesh as an
independent country.
He said former prime minister
and Bharatiya Janata Party
leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee, on
whose behalf Modi received the
Bangladesh Liberation Award
on Sunday, had described Indira
Gandhi as Durga following the
liberation of Bangladesh.
While receiving the award, he
(Modi) was not even ashamed of
himself that he has come as prime
minister of India and should have
respected the deeds of the former
prime minister Indira Gandhi,
Sharma said.
The
prime
minister
is
expected to show grace. He is
not representing himself but the
Republic of India, Sharma said.

egional planning for the development of the National Capital Region

(NCR) has resulted in decline in the population growth of Delhi over
the years, union Urban Development Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu said last
week.
Population growth of Delhi has come down from 47 percent in
1991-2001 to 21.2 percent during 2001-11 as a result of decline in
migration to Delhi and out migration from Delhi, Naidu said while
chairing a meeting of the NCR Planning Board (NCRPB).
Terming the NCRPB a unique model of inter-state regional
cooperation and development in the country, Naidu said the level
of urbanisation in the NCR was 62.6 percent, which was the highest
in the country.
It calls for special attention to address infrastructural and
environmental challenges, he added.
Delhi and some parts of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan
that surround the national capital city constitute the NCR, accounting
for a population of about five crore. The NCRPB enables balanced
growth and harmonious development in the region through regional
planning.

he West Bengal government has borrowed altogether Rs.64,300 crore

from the market since fiscal 2012-13, Finance Minister Amit Mitra told
the assembly last week.
Mitra said the Trinamool Congress government has spent over
Rs.58,000 crore for repaying the principal as also the interest for the
loans incurred by the preceeding Left Front regime.
He was replying to a poser from Leader of Opposition Surjya
Kanta Mishra who had sought details about the market borrowings
of the incumbent regime during 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15
Mishra pointed out that the total loan amount was Rs 1.87 lakh
crore when the Left Front was voted out in May 2011 and will shoot
up to Rs 2.92 lakh crores in 2015-16.
Attacking the Trinamool government, Mishra said while the Left
Front regime had left a laon burden of Rs 1.87 lakh crore after being
in power for 34 years, the Trinamool regime is all set to take Rs.1
lakh crore as loan in only five years.

SC extends stay on AIPMT results

till June 12

he Supreme Court of India has extended the stay of declaration of the

All India Pre-Medical Entrance Test results till June 12, over-riding its
earlier order restraining the Central Board of Secondary Education to hold
back the results till June 9.
The court had June 3 asked the CBSE not to go ahead with the
declaration of results till June 9 as it had given another weeks
time to Haryana Police to complete its probe into the leakage of the
question paper and the circulation of its answer key through electric
devices in 10 states.
The AIPMT were originally scheduled to be declared June 5.
A vacation bench of Justice R.K.Agrawal and Justice Amitava
Roy extended the stay on the results declaration after Additional
Solicitor General Pinki Anand mentioned the matter.
Earlier the matter was to come up for hearing June 10.
The court had given Haryana Police a weeks time to complete the
probe so that it could know the number of people who benefited from
the question paper leak. It is only after having an assessment of the
extent to which the integrity of the AIPMT has been compromised
that the court will decide on the plea for the re-conduct of the
entrance test.
The court is hearing of a PIL by Tanvi Sarwal along with another
petition by Jahnvi Shanker seeking the re-conduct of the AIPMT in
the wake of the leakage of the question paper and subsequent answer
key being circulated through electronic devices.

Malaysian PM approves $26m for

Indian communitys uplift

alaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak

has approved 100 million Malaysian ringgit (about $26
million) for the uplift of the Indian
community in the country.
The fund was approved to the
Special Unit for Socio-Economic
Development of the Indian Community (Sedic), Malaysias Bernama
news agency reported.
Sedic Director N.S.Rajendran
said last week that it was an effort to
create opportunities to improve the

lives of 40 per cent of the 2.6 million

ethnic Indians in the southeast
Asian nation.
He said funds would be channelled through non-governmental
organisations (NGOs) and skillstraining institutions that were selected based on certain criteria and
not to individuals or political parties. Rajendran said Sedic has identified 11 scopes for the Indian commmunity, including Tamil schools
issue, documentation, admission to
universities, youths at high risk, and

Indian participation in the public

sector. Sedic will ensure that the
funds are managed efficiently so
that the target groups receive benefits from the government, he said.
Over 600,000 Indians nationwide make up the bottom 40 percent in 38 districts in nine states and
earning less than 2,500 Malaysian
ringgit ($664) per month.
Every application made by NGOs
and skills training institutions goes

Indians at the centre of H-1B visa debate

ndian H-1B visa holders

are at the centre of a raging
debate over the usage of
the temporary visas after 250
employees of Walt Disney were
replaced by Indian immigrants as
part of a reorganisation plan of the
entertainment conglomerate, a US
daily said.
As many as 250 employees of
Walt Disney World were notified
in October last year that they
would be laid off, but over the next
three months they were required
to train their replacements to do
the jobs they had lost, The New
York Times reported recently. The
replacements, the daily said, were
brought in by an outsourcing firm
based in India.
The layoffs at Disney and
at other companies, including
the Southern California Edison
power utility, are raising new
questions about how businesses

21

and outsourcing companies are

using the temporary visas, known
as H-1B, to place immigrants in
technology jobs in the United
States, the prestigious daily said.
Immigrants on the H-1B visas
do the work of Americans for less
money, which has created a highly
lucrative business model, the
NYT quoted a Howard University
professor as saying.

For years, most top recipients of

the visas have been outsourcing or
consulting firms based in India, or
their American subsidiaries, which
import workers for large contracts
to take over entire in-house
technology units -- and to cut costs.
The immigrants are employees of
the outsourcing companies, the
daily said.
The report named Infosys, Tata

Consultancy Services and HCL

America among the top companies
granted more than 1,000 H-1B
visas.
Earlier in April this year, a group
of senators said the frequency of
H-1B-driven layoffs has increased
dramatically in the recent past and
called for a probe into the issue.
Only 85,000 H-1B visas are
granted to foreigners each year,
and they are in high demand.
Technology giants like Microsoft,
Facebook and Google repeatedly
press for increases in the annual
quotas, saying there are not enough
Americans with the skills they need.
HCL America was hired by

execute plan, deliver: Kohli

ven as Indian Test

skipper Virat Kohli
asserted that one
continues to learn with every
game, he insisted that his
players have acquired enough
knowledge to execute plans
and deliver results.
We learn about the game
all the time, even when we are
watching it on TV.
But I dont think we need
to play with a mindset of playing to learn. We have played
long enough now and know
what we want to achieve as a
unit, Kohli told mediapersons in Kolkata before the
Indian teams departure for
Bangladesh.
India are scheduled to
play a one-off Test match and
three One-Day Internationals
(ODIs) against Bangladesh
with the tour that begun with
the five-day match on June
10.
We all have played enough
to know how to execute plans.
So now we really want to
achieve rather than go out of a
match thinking what we have
learnt from it, asserted the
stylish batsman.
Talking about his own
experience as a captain, Kohli
said he learnt a lot during his
stint as the skipper in Australia
after Mahendra Singh Dhoni

Virat Kohli

retired from Tests midway in

the tour Down Under.
Test match is different
ball game where you need to
plan for the whole day unlike
ODIs or T20 where you plan
for short span of time.
You need to manage
the bowlers, manage the
workload along with planning
for the batsmen.
I have learnt a lot in
different
situations
in

Australia, and then we have

guys like Rohit Sharma,
Ishant Sharma and R. Ashwin
who are experienced and
that will certainly help us in
recognizing what we need to
do, added Kohli.
I inherited a lot of things
on aspects that I havent done
well. So it is all about how you
improve on your mistakes
and carry on with the good
work, added Kohli.

I was running and I saw a criminal lurking in the shadows. He was

wearing white clothes with black stripes. It looked as if they were pajamas;
he was also wearing silver chains around his body - the silver was as shiny
as moon light.
Suddenly, the flame blew out. The flame was specifically orange, yellow
and red. As I curiously took another step, I was terrified. Then, I found
another blazing hot torch and lit it up with a match and I pointed it to a
cell - the cell was as silver as the moon and then I realized that this is a
dungeon. I got even more terrified and my face turned an unusual colour first scarlet then white. When the colours stopped, I fainted. When I woke
up, I found myself in an old stinky sewer (well, I thought it was a sewer). A
toxic river was flowing everywhere. There was mould growing everywhere.
A criminals lair, I thought to myself. (Dan Dan Da-an!)

The Silent Gender Revolution

Esha Chanda

ind is a powerful
weapon.
It
can
break down barriers,
conquer the unconquerable and
turn the impossible into possible.
History is testimony to how ideas
in its nascent stages have had
revolutionary impacts.
In the small village of Piplantri
in Rajasthan, one man, armed
with an idea to break gender
stereotypes proposed an initiative
to plant trees for every girl child
born in the village. The then village
chief, Shyam Sundar Paliwal,
spearheaded this movement,
which has now been termed as
eco-feminism.
India has progressed in many
fields, yet one of the greatest
tragedies of a country that prides
itself on being the worlds largest
democracies is the patriarchal
system gushing through the veins
of its society. The country has
made tremendous progress since
its independence, but a large
section of the society still hasnt
evolved in their thinking.
The brutality of gender
inequality in India is not a new a
story being brought to light. The
Indian society has been a victim of
gender inequalities for centuries.

Shyam Sundar Paliwal and the proud residents of Piplantri where eco-feminism has taken roots

For a nation that claims to have

let go of its antediluvian thoughts,
the headlines of newspapers
narrate a different story. Reports
of rape, domestic violence and
sexual assault against women
often stir up the nation but not
much has been done by the
Indian government. Every time a
gruesome incident is reported, the
nation mourns the victims death.
They are numbed with grief and
shock by the act of unimaginable
cruelty in populated urban areas
where locals have failed to reach
out and help the victims.
Women in India dont seem to
have equal rights as men. While
the law doesnt see a disparity, it
is the mindset of the people that
is responsible for this growing

injustice. Female foeticide is still

prevalent in many regions of the
country, as girl child is considered
to be a burden to the family. But
challenging this mindset is the
village of Piplantri that is fighting
its way through the prejudice
against women.
The residents of this village
are working towards breaking
the traditional barriers associated
with girls and their place in the
society. This Rajasthani village
established a custom in 2006
under the leadership of the then
village chief who proposed the
idea of planting 111 saplings for
every girl child who took birth
in their village. In a state where
female foeticide is on the rise, the
villagers collaborated and pledged

to take forward the idea that

has now shaped into a tradition
that is followed by each villager.
Today, the birth of a girl child is
celebrated by not only the family
but also everyone else who has
been working together over the
past nine years.
In this silent gender revolution,
the villagers not only plant
saplings but also undertake the
responsibility of nurturing these
saplings. To further eradicate the
issue of female foeticide, parents
and villagers contribute towards
a fund that is raised to secure the
future of the girl child. A fixed
deposit account is opened under
the name of the child. Rs. 31,000 is
contributed by the panchayat and
villagers. And in order to ensure
that the money is used for the girl,
the fixed deposit matures only
after 20 years. But it doesnt stop
there. Parents are asked to sign
an affidavit promising that they
wont marry off their daughter
before she turns 18, provide her
with proper education and take
care of the saplings regularly. In
an age when a girl child is still
considered to be a burden to the
family in many parts of Rajasthan
because of the prevailing dowry
system, the fixed deposit acts as
a safety net for the family and the
girl. This unique custom offers a

refreshing change in the attitude

towards women in a country
where violence against women
is common, where a girl child is
deprived of proper education and
where young girls are married
before their legal age.
The other side to this practise
ensures a greener future for
the village. The saplings that
have been planted since 2006
have helped the villagers build
a sustainable environment. To
avoid the attack of termites, seeds
of aloevera were sown in the area
surrounding the trees, which now
act as a source of income for most
families.
In an age when human acts
are hindering the growth of a
sustainable environment, when
forests are being cut down to make
way for concrete walls, this village
sets an exceptional example. Their
distinctive efforts have enabled
a greener and secure future for
the village. When environment
protection seems like a lost cause
for the rest of the world, this
remote village is bringing about
a revolutionary change. They
stand testament to the fact that it
is not about how technologically
advanced you are, it is the mindset
that needs to undergo a change,
especially in a country such as
India.

IIFA brings Bollywood fans, stars closer in Malaysia

Natalia Ningthoujam

t was high on star power,

Bollywood business and
interactive sessions with
global fans. The 16th edition
of International Indian Film
Academy
(IIFA)
Weekend
and Awards, which concluded
on Sunday after three days of
entertainment and fun, saw a
galaxy of stars regaling their
umpteen fans in the Malaysian
capital.
With names like Hrithik
Roshan, Anil Kapoor, Ranveer
Singh and Priyanka Chopra in
attendance, the gala attracted
many star-struck admirers from
across the globe.
It just gets better each
year. Its a vast project with
budget between $10 million
and $25 million, Viraf Sarkari,

director, Wizcraft International

Entertainment Pvt Ltd, which
promotes IIFA Weekend and
Awards globally each year, told
IANS.
After travelling to locations
like London, Dubai, Macau,
Toronto, Singapore and Tampa
Bay, the IIFA extravaganza came
back to Malaysia for the second
time for its 16th edition, and the
organisers were not disappointed
at all.
The Putra Indoor Stadium
(venue of the awards ceremony,
which was held on Sunday) can
accommodate over 8,000 people
and all the tickets were sold out,
said Sarkari.
The edition was hailed by
many Bollywood fans, who
consider the three-day gala to
be perfect platform to meet their
idols.
Indian cinema is getting

popular day by day. The fans

hardly get a chance to meet the
stars and the stars also find it
difficult to connect with their
global fans like this. IIFA is the
perfect platform to bring them
close to each other, he said.
The fans got a chance to catch
Hrithik live in action at Pavilion
mall, where he interacted
with his fans and performed
impromptu as well.
Before the special screening
of the multi -starrer movie Dil
Dhadakne Do , fans also got to
shake hands, click selfies and take
autographs from their favourite
celebrities like the movies stars
Priyanka, Anil, Farhan Akhtar
and Anushka Sharma.
In its sweet 16 edition,
IIFA saw a string of stars, but
unlike previous editions, any
international
names
were
missing

from the list of star attendees.

We
invite
Hollywood
celebrities every year and they
decide whether to come or not,
explained Sarkari.
Talking about how IIFA is not
just any awards show, he added:
There are so many events that
take place within three days.
Hosted by actors Ayushmann
Khurrana and Parineeti Chopra,
IIFA Rocks, an exclusive music
extravaganza, saw a host of
musical
performances
by
Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy,
Mika,
Ankit Tiwari, Kanika Kapoor
and Javed Ali. Sonakshi also
displayed her singing skills at
IIFA Rocks.
There was also a dose
of fashion at the Fashion
Extravaganza, hosted by actors
Vivek Oberoi and Neha Dhupia.
It saw quirky designs by Masaba

Gupta, who presented a line

inspired by the IIFA trophy.
Rocky S also grabbed attention
of fashionistas with his evening
wear and dresses. Gaurang Shah
wowed the audience with his
ethnic wear creations.
The party ended on a starry
note with actors like Hrithik,
Anushka, Priyanka Chopra,
Parineeti, Shraddha Kapoor and
Shahid Kapoor setting the stage
on fire with their electrifying
performances on the final day.
The hosts of main awards
ceremony this year -- the
crackling duo of actors Ranveer
Singh and Arjun Kapoor,
who were in trouble for the
controversial AIB Roast video
earlier this year -- made many
roll with laughter with their
strong punchlines.
All in all, the IIFA edition was
as glitzy as it could get.

Fashion and all that jazz at IIFA 2015

f Gaurang Shah gave an

insight into traditional
Indian fabrics, Masaba
Gupta showed her quirky side
again through her fusion wear
creations. Ace designer Rocky
S brought the western side of
fashion with his range, consisting
of gowns, dresses and more, at
the ongoing International Indian
Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend
and Awards in Kuala Lumpur.
Hosted by Bollywood actors
Vivek Oberoi and Neha Dhupia,
Fashion Extravaganza, an event
dedicated to fashion at IIFA,
held on Saturday brought music,
fashion and film stars together.
It began on a musical note

with Nakash Aziz singing some

of the catchy Bollywood numbers
like Dhating naach, Pyaar
ki pungi baja kar and Gandi
baat, for which popular singer
Mika Singh got on the stage and
joined him.
Once the models sashayed
down the ramp in Shahs
creations, the music shifted from
contemporary dance numbers
to classics like In aankhon ki
masti and Chalte chalte.
Titled Umrao, the collection
had 26 looks. Consisting of
lehengas, saris, churidars, kurtas
and more in colours such as
pink, yellow, golden, red and
purple, the range is perfect for

those who love to go traditional.

Happy New Year actor Sonu
Sood walked on the ramp with
a stole around his neck and and
kurta pyjama as a showstopper
for the designer, who has worked
with actresses like Kirron Kher
and Kajal Aggarwal.
Singer Aditi Singh Sharma
also made the audience dance
to her tunes with numbers like
Dhoom machale dhoom and
Sooraj dooba hai.
Masaba then showcased her
fusion wear line inspired by
IIFA at the event, attended by
celebrities like R. Madhavan,
Kanika Kapoor and Lisa Haydon.
With colours like gold and

black used in abundance, the

collection, which had sari with
collared blouse, jackets, pants
and shirts, also had sun graphics
just like the IIFA trophy. She
had as many as three celebrities
walking on the ramp in her
creations.
While Aditi Rao Hydari
rocked the black body-hugging
gown, which also looked a
bit like a sari, Huma Qureshi
stepped out in a black, red and
gold number with garland on her
hair. Malaika Arora Khan also
wore a black and gold outfit that
accentuated her curves.
Before Rocky S presented his
western collection, Nakash and

Aditi Singh again got on stage

and raised the energy level of the
audience with their performance.
Rockys show began with
actress Dia Mirza sashaying
down the ramp in a dream
gown. The collection went on to
feature body-huggin g dresses,
gown with high slit, skirts with
frills and more.
Actress-dancer
Lauren
Gottlieb looked stunning in a
black one shoulder gown, created
by the popular designer.
If Lauren was all black, actress
Shriya Saran donned the white
look well. Rockys friend and
actress Bipasha Basu also joined
the others in a black number.

Farhan Akhtar says the
reason why hes a part of
showbiz is not because he comes
from a film family, but due to
megastar Amitabh Bachchan.
Farhan will be sharing screen
space with the Big B in Wazir,
an upcoming political action

Talking about working with
him, Farhan said: It is almost
dream like to be sharing this kind
of screen space with him. I have
had the fortune of working with
him once before, but this really is
a whole other level.
I have said that over and over
again that one of the predominant

movie Dil Dhadakne Do is
meanwhile, getting eyeballs galore
on the big screen.

International Yoga day

celebrations in Auckland

n 11th Dec 2014, The United Nations

General Assembly adopted a
resolution proclaiming June 21st as
International Day of Yoga. General Assembly
Vice
President lvaro Mendonca E Moura
(Portugal), delivering a statement on behalf
of General Assembly President Sam Kutesa
(Uganda), noted the overwhelming support
that the resolution on yoga had received, with
more than 170 cosponsors.
He congratulated Indias Prime Minister
Shri Narendra Modi for the initiative to observe
the International Day of Yoga, which brought
thought and action together in harmony.
The representative of Sao Tome and
Principe also underlined that yoga would not
only promote health, but support clarity of
vision and action.
That clarity could help prevent
contradictions, which often generated
confusion while making rules and promoting
laws.
Over the weekend of 20 21 June, hundreds
of yoga schools and Hindu associations
worldwide will be joining together to practice
yoga to promote world health, spiritual
harmony and human rights.
In Auckland on Saturday, 20 June 2015,
from 10 am to 2 pm, the New Zealand School

of Meditation and other yoga studios are

holding a FREE public Yoga Expo at MT
Albert War Memorial Hall, 751 New North
Rd. The program will include demonstrations
of different styles and techniques including
beginners hatha yoga practice, guided
relaxation, mantra breathing, free flow yoga
to music, yoga lifestyle advice, meditation
and kirtan. Prominent NZ yoginis Nikki
Ralston and Kara Leah Grant will feature with
others in a program which offers an all-round
introduction to the basic practices of yoga now
popular with millions of people around the
world.
New Zealand School of Meditation
spokesperson Jacqui Lyttle, said she hopes
that people with an interest in learning about
yoga will take this free opportunity and learn
how to apply the wonderful basic practices of
yoga in their lives. Everyone is welcome to join
in or simply watch and listen. Jacqui added
that the Manukau Indian Association will be
hosting a celebration in Manukau on Sunday
21st at the Vodafone Events centre from 8am
to 10 am.

In 2015, I was awarded AUT

What are the milestones you

have covered so far?

How is the selection made for

the World Championship?

At the age of 14, I was selected

in the U19 NZ squad, training
for the 2013 World Junior

There

JUEE BHIDE

Since when are you playing

Squash?
I used to play netball quite a
lot and I was good at netball and
also played for the school team but
somewhere I knew that eventually
I may not break into the big
leagues. So my mum one day took
me to the Mt Eden club, I watched
the game and I liked it. I was 11
when I first took the racquet in my
hand and started training under
former World Champion Carol
Owens.
Though I started relatively late,
I practiced once in a week initially
and then regularly, when I turned
12. I started to get more serious
about it when I was awarded the
Most Improved Junior Player
in 2010, Most Improved Overall
Female and Squash Excellence
Awards by Squash Auckland.
What
was
breakthrough?

your

first

In Squash your performance is

graded and you are given points

that start from 100. A player starts
with J grade and that is less than
600 points, F grade in from 600
to 900 and so on until A grade.
So when you win games you get
points added and if you lose those
points are deducted. Right now I
am at 2900 points and grade A2.
I got 1500 points in a year and
that was in 2010, the same year I

pressure on each player and the

competition is tough. I had to
consistently play well in all the
tournaments because that is the
game that matters. In the New
Zealand Squash Juniors U19
ranking I am at number 3.
On May 21st I received the
best squash news from Squash
NZ. I was named in New Zealand
Squash team to represent the
World Junior Championships in
Netherlands in July 2015.
How has been the support
from your family?
Both my Mum and Dad have
been an incredible support to me.
My dad finishes his work early,
drives me to the club in North
Shore, stays there for as long as I
am practicing and drives me back
home. Not just that, he goes to all
the matches that I play and since
he knows the game. He tells me
my weak points and where I need
to improve. It is not just a moral
support but he also acts like a
coach at games.
Looking forward to...
5 years down the line, I am
aiming to be among top 3 in the
Senior World Ranking. But right
now, I am practicing harder than
before since World Championship
is barely five weeks away. Fingers
crossed!
