Cutting Speed , feed, and depth of cut

1. Cutting speed
One of the most important factors affecting the efficiency of a milling
operation is cutter speed . the cutting speed of metal may be defined as
the speed , in meters per minute (m/minute) , at which the metal may be
machined efficiently. When the work is machined in a lathe, it must be
turned at specific number of revolutions per minute (r/min), depending on
its diameter , to achive the proper cutting speed.
Since different types of metals vary in hardness , structure , dan
machinability, different cutting speed must be used for each of metal and
fo various cutter materials. Sveral factors must be considered when
determining the proper (r/min) at which to machine a metal . the most
important are:
a. The type of work material
b. tHe cutter material
c. the diameter of the cutter
d. the surface finish required
e. the depth of cut taken
f. the rigidity of the machine and work setup
Metric Calculation
The r/min at which the milling machine should be set when using metric
measurements is as follow:

n(rpm)=

CS ( m ) 1000
D (mm)

Since only a few machines are equipped with variable speed drives,
which allow the tobe set to the exact calculated speed , a simplified
formula can be used to calculate r/min . the pi (3,1416) on the bottom line
of the mately 320 times . this results in a simplified formula , which is
close enough for most milling operations:
Although

n(rpm)=

CS ( m ) 320
D(mm)

Feed
Metric calculation

feed ( mm/min )=N CPT n(rpm)

Keterangan
Feed (mm/min)
N : jumlah gigi cutter
CPT : chip per tooth (on table)
n : rotasi per menit
