ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The Concluding Rite of the

Mass is short but very
important, ending with the
final prayer and a dismissal.
The final prayer is a Thanksgiving Prayer. We
thank the Lord for pardoning our sins, speaking to
us through the readings, and coming to us and
dwelling is us in the form of bread and wine. After
the concluding prayer, the priest gives the final
blessing; however, we need to remember that the
Mass does not end with the final blessing of the
congregation. The final blessing is, in one sense,
an ending to the Mass, but it also prepares us to
encounter the risen Lord in our daily life inviting
us to live out our Catholic identity at home, work
place, school, and with friends throughout the
week.
For the dismissal we usually hear a simple
benediction, such as "May almighty God bless you,
the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit
after the congregation responds, Amen, the
priest/deacon says, The Mass is ended, go in
peace." The people then respond, "Thanks be to
God." The new English translation of the Roman
Missal which we currently use has several formats
for the priests dismissal, such as "Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord"; "Go forth the
SCRIPTURE READINGS

Mass is ended"; "Go in peace"; and "Go in peace,

glorifying the Lord by your life." The rite of dismissal then provides an outward thrust of the
liturgy, clearly indicating that our worship of God
continues after the close of the service.
According to the General Instruction of the
Roman Missal (GIRM), 90, the purpose of the
dismissal is "so that each may go out to do good
works, praising and blessing God." It is interesting to note that, while the literal meaning of the
dismissal is simply a granting of permission to
leave the assembly, throughout the Church's
history this liturgical tradition has unfolded
creatively, suggesting more of a mission than a
simple sending away. It is a matter of finding God
in everyone and everything. The sending forth
commissions us to transform the way we live our
lives so that Christ's presence may be revealed in
and through us and we may become a beacon of
light to our brothers and sisters searching for
God. While explaining Gods presence in and
around us, Saint John Paul II said that it is not
enough to receive the body of Christ, we must
become the body of Christ; it is not enough to
celebrate the Eucharist; we must become the hands
and feet of Jesus.

ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

JUNE 14TH,
WELCOME NEW PARISHIONERS

Mass, therefore, invites us to live in the presence of

God and take Christ to our brothers and sisters.
When I started writing about the Mass, I initially
intended to write one or two articles. However,
when I began writing, I thought that I must
continue to write, at least by explaining the various
parts of Mass which I enjoyed doing. It was not
because the various parts of the Mass were something new to us, but mainly because my hope and
goal was for you to have a deeper understanding of
Mass and what it can be for you to relive this sacred
mystery on a weekly basis. As I am in love with the
Eucharist, I wanted you also to cherish and fall in
love with the Lord in the Eucharist, which is the
source and summit of our faith. We are truly
privileged to receive the body and blood of Christ
every week in the Eucharist. The question is, how
does Mass enable us to bear witness to Jesus and
recognize the presence of Christ out in the world?

DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

O Jesus,
I pray for your faithful and fervent priests;
For your unfaithful and tepid priests;
For your priests laboring at home or
Abroad in distant mission fields.
For your tempted priests;
For your lonely and desolate priests;
For your young priests;
For your dying priests;
For the souls of your priests
in Purgatory.
But above all, I recommend to you
The priests dearest to me;
The priest who baptized me;
The priests who absolved me from
my sins;
The priests at whose Masses
I assisted and who gave me
Your Body and Blood in
Holy Communion;
The priests who taught and
instructed me;
All the priests to whom I am indebted
in any other way
(especially...)
O Jesus, keep them all close
to your heart,
And bless them abundantly
in time and in Eternity,
Amen

ANNULMENTS ~ An annulment is a declaration by the Catholic Church that after careful

investigation, flaws were discovered in the relationship that prevented it from becoming a marriage. An annulment is concerned mainly with
the personal and spiritual aspects of marriage.
It does not erase the civil contract, and it does
not render the children illegitimate. It merely
states that after thorough investigation, the
Church has decided that a marriage, as the
Church understands marriage, was not valid.
If you are interested in receiving the Sacrament
of Matrimony or a Marriage Blessing,
but dont know where to start, please call
(619) 463-6629, or inquire at the parish office.
We will be happy to answer any questions
you may have.
The Santa Sophia Food Pantry needs
you! Every week, our food pantry is
offered generous donations from local
merchants. Canned goods, produce,
tolietries, and even cleaning supplies are available
to the pantry. However, all these items need to be
picked up and brought back to the pantry building.
That is where you can help. We need people willing to drive to the donating store and load these
items, then bring them back to our building. From
there, they can be sorted and distributed to those in
need. If you have a truck, and 2 or 3 hours a week,
please call us. If you'd like to help but don't have a
truck, we can still match you up with someone who
does and you can work as a team. Most pickups
times are early morning 8:00 - 10:00 am. Call Paul
at (619) 916-9680 for more information.
