Final Observation-ED 271

Student: Dong Duong

Term: Winter 2015

School: Woodmere Elementary

Practicum Supervisor: Jennifer Margolis

I observed Dong in a First Grade classroom at Woodmere Elementary on January 22,

2015. During this time, Dong led a small group of students who were taking turns
reading from a book.
Dong did an excellent job of having the students participate by having them retell
the story. He broke the task into smaller parts by asking the students, What
happens first? Next? Last? He also asked the students to name the main character
as well as use some of the vocabulary in their own sentences. Dong frequently
asked questions to ensure comprehension. He also had the students use visual cues
of the pictures in the book to help them answer questions. Dong also asked the
students to read the story aloud at home that night, then summarize the story to
their parents.
I was able to observe Dong lead this same group in their reading lesson last term. I
was really impressed by how much the students have improved in their reading
skills, as well as how much growth Dong has shown in leading the group. Dong
appears to be more relaxed with the group and has implemented some behavior
management skills that are really paying off. He gives good positive feedback and
encourages the students. From reading his Journal entries, Dong has discussed
being able to see how the theories he learns in his classes at PCC are put into action
in the classroom. Its exciting to see Dong make the connection with theory and
practice, and its a pleasure to watch the growth both the students and Dong have
made.
The classroom teacher stated, Mr. Duong is always seeking out ways to help even
outside his assigned time to me, translating, making copies, etc. She gave him
high marks for his work in the classroom.
This term, Dong also helped students put together a celebration for the Lunar New
Year, as he helped integrate his knowledge and expertise in the subject for students
to have a presentation for the school.
Dong did an excellent job with his Practicum, and has shown a lot of growth over the
past two terms. His dedication, work ethic, and kindness would be a welcome
addition to any school.
