QUTBOARD MOTOR INSTALLATION SERVICE MANUAL NUMBER 11 Installing the Shift Cable Avoid serious injury or death. Remove the keys from the ignition and disengage the safety stop switch before performing this procedure. IMPORTANT: Install the shift cable to the engine first. The shift cable is the first cable to move when the remote contro! handle is moved out of neutral. To locate the shift cable's center point: 1. Remove the keys from the ignition and disengage the safety stop switch. 2. Mark the forward position as follows: a. Move the remote control handle into forward and advance the handle to the full speed position, Ensure that the throttle control lever is touching the throttle control lever stop screw. b. Slowly return the handle back to the neutral detent position. c, Place a mark on the shift cable against the cable end guide. a - Forward position mark 3. Mark the reverse position as follows: a. Move the remote control handle into reverse and advance the handle to the full speed position. Ensure that the throttle control lever is touching the throttle control lever stop screw. b. Slowly return the handle back to the neutral detent position. c. Mark the center on the shift cable,midway between the forward and reverse marks. a -Center mark 5. Align the cable end guide against this center mark when installing the cable to the engine. 6. Position the remote control and outboard into neutral position. 7. Slide the shift cable retainer forward until resistance is felt, then slide the cable anchor toward the rear until resistance is felt. 8. Center the anchor pin between these resistance points. a -Anchor pin b -Shift cable retainer ADJUSTING THE SHIFT CABLE To adjust the shitt cable: 1. Align the shift cable end guide with the center mark as instructed in the Locating the Center Point of the Shift Cable section, el? cmt 2. Place the shift cable end guide on the anchor pin and adjust the cable barrel so that it slips freely into the barrel holder. 3. Secure shift cable with shift cable retainer. Shift the remote control to forward while turning the propeller shaft. If the propeller shaft does not lock in gear, adjust the cable barrel closer to the cable end guide. b. Shift the remote control into neutral. If the propeller shaft does not tum freely without drag, adjust the barrel away from the cable end guide. Repeat steps “a” and “b.” c. Shift the remote control into reverse while turing the propeller shaft. If the propeller shaft does not lock solidly in gear, adjust the barrel away from the cable end guide. Repeat steps a through °c." d. Return the remote control handle to neutral. If the propeller shaft does not turn freely without drag, adjust the barrel closer to the cable end guide. Repeat steps a through "d.” 5. Retum the safety stop switch to the “RUN” position. Installing the Throttle Cable IMPORTANT: Attach the shift cable to the engine prior to attaching the throttle cable. To install the throttle cable: 1. Shift the remote control into neutral position. 2. Altach the throttle cable to the throttle lever. Secure with a washer and locknut.
