Literature of Latin America

The historical development of Latin American literature is not at all comparable to that of
Europe. The literature that flourished during the colonial period inevitably mirrored the styles
and conventions of the metropolitan countries of Spain and Portugal, which were they outside
the European mainstream. It is mostly written in several languages particularly in Spanish,
Portuguese and indigenous languages of America. Their literature focuses on the personal, social,
or political struggles of the average citizen.
