Exponential Equation Method 2

Remember that we want to know how many halves of 1 will give us 200
First, we convert to meters. This is easy if we remember the scientific notation for the prefixes
1.0 103 = 1 ,

1.0 1012 = 1

Now, we can substitute our prefixes into the equation.

If we half the graphite times, then that gives a thickness of
1
( ) 1.0 103
2
Or
1.0 103

2
Now, we need to find out when this function will equal 200 1012 by setting up the
equation
Remember to be precise with scientific notation
200 1012 = 2.0 1010
1.0 103
= 2.0 1010
2
And solve for
1.0 103
2 (
= 2.0 1010 )

2
1.0 103 2.0 1010 2
=
2.0 1010
2.0 1010
1.0 103
= 2
2.0 1010
1.0 103
log 2
=
2.0 1010
22.253
Notice that our change of units does not alter the answer from the one we found previously. Be
sure to discuss why this occurs. Also, make sure the students understand why the exponents are
negative in this method as opposed to the positive exponents in the first method.
