OnemovementthatmostappealedtomemostwasCubism.Cubismwas
popularintheearlytwentiethcenturywithitsfamous
artiststhatincludedPabloPicassoandGeorges
Braque.SomecharacteristicsofCubisminclude
differentanglesoffacesandobjectsalltogetherand
variousshapes.Forexamplemyfavoritepiece,which
istheWeepingWomanbyPicasso,hasfrontfacing
angesliketheeyesyetthewomansfaceisturned
andherjawandnoseareasideview.Ilikethispiece
becausethedistortedviewplustheemotionandcolorsdrawyouintothepieceand
makesyouthinkaboutthebackstory.Overall,Ilikedthismovementbecauseofthe
differentanglesandcolorsthatPicassousedinhispieces.
AnothermovementthatIenjoyedlearningandmakingartofwasSurrealism.
Surrealismisa20thcenturyartmovementthatbeganintheearly1920s.Famous
artistsofthismovementincludeSalvadorDaliandReneMagritte.Characteristicsofthis
movementsartaredetailedfocusononepieceoftheartthatsparticularlybigwhen
painted.MyfavoriteSurrealistartpieceisTheSonofManbymyfavoriteSurrealist

artist,ReneMagritte.Ilikethispiecebecauselikemany
otherSurrealismartpiecesitmakesyouthinkand
questiontheworkbecauseofhowsimpleyetmysteriousit
is.Overall,Ilikedthismovementbecauseofhowstrange
andcoolthepieceslookandhowmuchtheyconfuseyou.

OnetechniquethatIwasiffyaboutinthebeginningbutgrewtoenjoywas3D
sculpture.Wedid3DsculptureinourCubismunittomakeapieceinspiredbycubism
withfacestomakeabust.IthoughtminewasgoingtocomeoutterriblesinceIthought
usingallhardstockpapertoconstructawholebustwouldbehard.WhatIdidfirstwas
sketchouthowIhopeditwouldbethenIbeganconstructingtheflatsurfacesandnext
thepiecesthatwouldconnectthetwotogethertomakeit3D.Weusedmaterialssuch
ashotglueguns,xactoknives,scissors,andhardstock/thickpaper.Myendresultwas
successfulbecauseIlovedhowmypiececameouteventhoughIfearedIwouldntbe
abletoapplymy2Dideastoa3Dpiece.
AnothertechniquethatIlovedlearningwastheImpressionismpaintingmethod
andstrokes.Itwasdifficultformetonotmixanycolorsonmypaletteanddoshort
brushstrokeswithasmallbrush.Itwastimeconsumingsincewefirsthadtochoose
whatcolorsweweregoingtomake,wherewewantedtoshowaspecifictextureor
movement,andlittlebylittlewiththesmallbrushstrokesmakeourpiececome

together.IenjoyedthisstyleofpaintingbecauseofhowmuchfunIhadseeingthe
progressofmyworkaftereachlayerofpaintIwouldputon.Iespeciallylovedmyresult
ofthismethodwhenIrecreatedtheStarryNightinmyAmericanGothicparodybecause
ofhowmuchmovementanddetailmypieceshowed.
