'Sleeping beauty': 2,000-year-old remains found in biblical city

It was this initial visit that ultimately

led her to discover the 2,000-year-old
remains of a character she fondly refers
to as "sleeping beauty."

that first drew Louise Schofield -- an
archaeologist and former curator at
the British Museum -- to the Gheralta
plateau in northern Ethiopia. She'd heard
tell of a 20-foot stone stele carved with
an inscription and a symbol often linked
to the biblical queen: a sun and crescent
moon.
"The story of the Queen of Sheba has a
central place in the heart of all Ethiopians,
so I became interested in the story
myself," she recalls (Sheba is thought to
be located in parts of Ethiopia).

"The food, drink and cosmetics were all

presumably left for her to use in the afterlife.

She was pre-Christian and that's how people
buried their dead then," says Schofield.
Shofield has a bit of the Midas touch when it
comes to extraordinary finds. She also recently
uncovered a Roman-era perfume flask in
the same cemetery, although by chance. The
archaeologist is also the director of Londonbased NGO The Tigray Trust, and the item was
first brought to her attention by a local farmer
she knew through the organization.
"I had been showing around a member of the
Peace Corps who had been working in a nearby
town (around the site), and we'd been out in the
blazing sun for 8 hours, when a farmer I knew
said his friend found something old, and he'd
been keeping it for me," she recalls.
"I was apologizing to the Peace Corps guy. I
told him, 'it could be an old coffee pot, but you
never know, it could be the Queen of Sheba's
perfume flask.'"

ESFNA: A Brief History

TIPS

Ethiopian Sports Federation

in North America
About The Pan
Am Games

The Ethiopian Sports Federation in North

America (ESFNA) is a non-profit, taxexempt organization founded in 1984
to promote amateur soccer and cultural
events within the Ethiopian community in
North America. ESFNA holds a week long
soccer tournament every year. The soccer
tournament as a medium, the organizations
highest aim is bringing Ethiopians together
for a multitude of reasons.
ESFNAs growth in North America has its
roots in Ethiopians migration to the United
States and Canadaespecially since the
1980s. Although there were some interstate friendly soccer competitions in both
coasts of the US amongst Ethiopians, the
foundation of ESFNA was first envisioned
by Ethiopians residing in the cities of
Atlanta, Boston, Dallas, Houston, Los
Angeles and Washington DC, , . The first
tournament was held in Houston with the
participation of four clubs (Washington DC,
Dallas, Houston, and Atlanta) on April 20,
1984. Because of communication problem
the Boston and the LA teams were unable
to participate in that first tournament. A
year later, the tournament was held in
Washington D.C. with additional clubs.
In 1985, in addition to the soccer
tournament, ESFNA member teams
elected officers responsible for managing
the Federation under a new format. A lot
has changed since then; perhaps the most
significant being the adoption of operating
by-laws, tournament rules and regulation
(ESFNA Disciplinary Codes) of the games
and the establishment of a federal taxexempt status in the United States.
Some of the founding principles of
ESFNA were borne out of the desire for
Ethiopians at the time and in the future to
have something they claim as their own
for generations. A week-long occasion at
which Ethiopians can come together to
celebrate their culture, identity and assure
the continuity of their ideals in perpetuity.
It was a vision of organizing a platform at

which Ethiopians can come to express their

humanity through sports and other cultural
interactions amongst themselves and the
North American community. Its goals are
also providing positive role models for the
youth by inviting famous Ethiopians who
have done much for their country through
sports, arts and the humanities.
Over the past three decades, ESFNA has
become a cultural and sports Mecca for
Ethiopians in North America. Every year,
thousands of Ethiopians and friends of
Ethiopia spend one week in one of the 25
North American cities selected as a host
city; they watch dozens of soccer games
amongst the 30 member clubs. Pilgrims
also witness and interact with hundreds of
food and dry good vendors and non-profit
charitable organizations--in one venue.
However, much happens surrounding
the soccer tournament independent of
ESFNAwhich is exactly what the
organization envisioned since its inception.
Along the way, every year, Ethiopians
spend millions of dollars in the host city-making a major contribution to the local
economy.
ESFNA, by virtue of its status, has no
political, religious, ethnic organization
and/or other affiliations. We have adhered
to this position all along because we are
legally expected to take such a stance and
our focus is sports and culture. However,
outside of the sports events, ESFNA has
contributed in initiatives to be part of
development and humanitarian efforts in
Ethiopia. Source: ESFNA

5 Mistakes to Avoid This Spring

This has already been
a very busy Spring
for buyers, sellers and
real estate agents. In
order to ensure that
your deals close in an
orderly manner, without
any additional costs,
expenses or aggravation
for you and your clients,
take care to avoid the
following common errors

apartments, zoning, building permits and lot coverage

is not easy to figure out. If you are not sure, make the
deal conditional upon lawyer review or further due
diligence. Consider hiring a private planner who is
experienced with the applicable City by-laws to assist
you. If you have an issue with a tree on or near the
boundary line, contact an arborist to assist you. Cities
have different by-laws when it comes to taking down
trees or cutting roots or branches so be informed in
advance.

1.
Try not to do
everything by yourself; know when to ask for help

One of the most common errors made is when an

agent copies the information from an expired listing
instead of doing the required due diligence. It would
likely also be considered of your ethical duties of due
diligence. Remember, one of the reasons the listing
may not have sold is because of the effort put in by
the prior agent. Don't make the same mistakes. If
you are not sure about anything, even after doing due
diligence, then consider using a disclaimer clause,
that your seller is not warranting the matter and the
buyer should conduct their own due diligence. This is
especially true when it comes to room measurements
or lot sizes.

Mr. Gurpreet Dhillon

Sales Repesentative

Clauses: How many times have you written in that

the home will be left free of garbage and in a broom
swept condition on closing, only to find that the home
is a mess at the pre-closing visit. In order for a buyer
lawyer to be able to hold back money on closing to
solve the issue, it has to say so.
Why not include the following language: "If the home
is not in a clean and broom swept condition at the time
of the final pre-closing inspection, the buyer shall be
given a credit in the final statement of adjustments in
the amount of $XX. (You choose the amount)
Condominium Keys and FOBs. I can't tell you how
many times buyers have complained when they have
not received 2 full sets of keys, garage door openers
and FOB's on closing. How about the following
language:
"Seller agrees to deliver to buyer on closing 2
complete sets of keys, garage door openers and FOBs
for complete access to the condominium unit, the
mailbox, the building, parking garage, all common
areas and the locker unit for the property purchased.
If the seller fails to provide any key, garage door
opener or FOB, then the Seller shall immediately pay
the Buyer the actual replacement cost of any such
key, garage door opener or FOB or the Buyer shall be
given a credit for this amount on the final statement
of adjustments."
Conditions - If the condition expires 5 business days
after acceptance and the contract was accepted at 4
pm, when does the condition expire 5 days from now,
at 4 pm, 6 pm or 11:59 pm? Who wants to go to court
fighting about it? Why not insert language that just
says:
"Conditional until 11:59 pm on the 5th business day
after acceptance."
2. Planning/zoning/tree Issues. Also know when to
ask for help.
Any issue regarding parking pads or permits, basement

3. Avoid careless errors

4.

Do it the same way every time

When you review the REALTOR agreements

or your agreements of purchase and sale with your
buyers and sellers, do it the same way every time.
Make sure the clients understand all key provisions,
being the price, deposits, closing date, chattels/rental
items included and any conditions. Remember,
conditions need to be exercised in good faith or sellers
may refuse to release any deposits.
5.

Little things matter

Is the closet organizer or television bracket included?

Be clear about all the little things in your deal and
your buyers and sellers will not have aggravation after
closing.
By avoiding common mistakes, not only will you
have less aggravation this Spring, your clients will
appreciate your services even more, which should
lead to more repeat business and referrals.

market or just need some advice, please contact me

Sylvia Pankhurst: Citizen of the World

Her Struggle against Colonial Aggression in Ethiopia
Emperor Haile Selassie, Sylvia E. Pankhurst And the Ethiopian Independence
By Berihun Assfaw (Toronto, Canada)

Ato Berihun Assefaw

TO BE CONTINUED

In 1905, when Winston Churchill
was campaigning to be a Liberal MP, there
was a confrontation between him and the
young Sylvia Pankhurst. He physically
pushed her from where she was questioning
him about his support of womens right
to votes? Because the public forced him
to answer her question he gave a negative
answer about womens votes in Britain.
She held a low opinion of him throughout
her life, most especially his support of
Mussolini and fascism, against Ethiopia,
was contemptible to her. The only time
they agreed politically was when he came

to the opinion that fascism was a danger to

the world, and later became antiHitlerMussolini Axis. Of course, he was about
20 years late in recognizing the dangers of
fascism.

From 80% to 90% of Italian
solders were already defeated by the
Patriots, who fought for five and six years
against Mussolinis troops, and shed their
blood. The one hundred British solders that
came to Ethiopia in 1941 with Haile Selassie
under the command of Col. Orde Wingate,
found morally and physically defeated
Italians. The defeat of the Italians in East
Africa boosted the morale and propaganda
of the Allied Forces, especially that of the
British in Europe. After the return of Haile
Selassie to his country it was Sylvia who
flew to Ethiopia and Eritrea in 1944 and
visited the countries which were controlled
by the British Military Authorities. She was

shocked to her core. She hadnt thought the

British would be so blatant in their treatment
of Ethiopia and Eritrea not as independent
peoples as the British government promised,
but as colonial peoples. In Eritrea she found
the British Military Authorities working with
Italian fascists, hand-in-hand.The Eritreans
were living in the localities for natives, and
were not allowed to go to the white area.
The fascists color bar was intact.

In Eritrea, Pankhurst visited
every institution, school, hospital, factory,
government department and important town.
She talked with the local people and the
British Government Officials. Wherever she
went, the Eritrean people complained about
the British Militarys Administrations grave
injustices under Brigadier Stephen Longrig.

At the time of Sylvia Pankhursts
visit, Italian fascists were still in office
in Eritrea. They controlled the courts
and imposed heavy sentences for trifling

offences by the Eritreans. Italian fascists,

who were in high office under the British
during the time of Sylvias stay in Eritrea,
were very important fascists sent from
Rome, like Major Papa, a trusted fascist who
was Chief of the Police, Commendatore
Antonio Buongiorno President of the Court
of Asmara, Commendatore Emanuele
Montsefusco Attorney General, Dr. Tucci
Public Prosecutor and Judge Dorozza, Dr.
Luigi Guerra and Dr. Tonarelli the judges of
the high court of Eritrea.

Maresciallo Baldini, a fascist
officer known to perform cruel deeds under
the Italian regime, was Chief of the Market
area Police Station under the British. The
Fascist Color Bar was intact under the
British rule. Discrimination against the
Eritrean population continued when Sylvia
Pankhurst visited Eritrea. Over the front
doors of Cafs, cinemas, restaurants and

The British Officers in Asmara
great English lady with the big heart, who

hotels appeared the words Vietato per

Nativi (Prohibited for Natives). Italian
taxi-drivers were not allowed to accept
Eritrean customers under the British
regulations.
Mrs. Sylvia Pankhurst had been informed
about the unfairness of the British trading
licenses and the granting of land. The
Eritrean Elders complained to Sylvia when
the British granted import and exporter
licenses to foreign-residents which were
refused to Eritreans. The Eritreans also
complained to Sylvia that the British
Authorities granted land to the Italians, but
refused it to Eritreans.

The distinguished Eritreans, that
represent the entire Eritrean population, also
complained that taxation under the British
was excessive and at a level which the people
could not afford. Pankhurst had noticed
also the British governments imposition
of severe regulation to prevent uncensored
written and printed matter between Ethiopia
and Eritrea. Lorry drivers carrying letters
from Ethiopia to Eritrea were getting heavy
fines. Letters from Ethiopia to Eritrea had
to be sent through postal channels and pass
British censorship.

Because the Eritreans wanted to
be united with Ethiopia the Chief Military
Administrator, Brigadier Stephen Longrig,
prohibited the Eritrean population from
meeting more than three persons at a time.
This was to suffocate the voice of the
people, in order to deny them freedom
of speech. The regulation of the British
governor of Eritrea didnt have successes
in preventing Eritreans from meeting and
talking about their future. They continued
meeting in small groups in various houses to
discuss the future of their country.

Politically, the British Authorities
had divided the Eritreas populace by
ethnicity, religion, region, language and
locality, in order to divide and rule. The
promises which were given to Emperor
Haile Selassie, Eritreans, Sylvia Pankhurst,
the Friends of Ethiopia, and the British
Public were reversed.

Because of the divide and rule
method and instigation of conflict by the
British, the Eritrean people started fighting
each other. The people who wanted to be
united with Ethiopia were suppressed,
beaten, imprisoned, and some of them
killed.

In Asmara, Sylvia talked with
Eritrean political and social leaders under
the leadership of Ato (later Dejazmach)
Tedla Baheru and others. She was informed
about the political views of the Eritrean
populace-the majority wanted to be reunited with Ethiopia. She visited the native
localities and talked with people. Wherever
she went, she found out that the majority of
the Eritrean populace wanted unity, but the
British authorities acted as obstacles, using
the anti-unity, and pro-British persons like
Ato Woldeab Wolde Mariam, the Britishs
Ras, Ras Tessema and his son Dejazmch
Abraham Tessema.

The British also dismissed a large
proportion of Eritrean police and replaced
them with Sudanese soldiers. The Eritrean
police officers were dismissed because
of their love of Ethiopia and of their proEthiopian political stand. The Sudanese
solders acted brutally against the Eritreans
and the Greeks who were detained in Eritrea.
The British detained the Greeks, who were
anti- monarchists, and the Palestine Jews, in
Eritrea.
13
Pankhursttalked
with
the
distinguished Eritrean Elders, studied their
views, saw the socio-political activities of
the people, observed the divide and rule
way of the British, and took the matter to
the British Officials. She told them what
they did in Eritrea was unfair, unjust,
undemocratic and contrary to the promise
that the British government gave to Ethiopia
and Eritrea. She told them when she
returned to London, she would bring the
matter to the attention of the British public,
and government.

After she returned to London, the

worked day and night for the Ethiopian

independence, wrote an open letter to Prime
Minister Attlee, Foreign Secretary Bevin,
Mr. A. Greenwood and Mr. Noel Baker.
She explained to them what the British
Military Authorities were doing in Ethiopia
and Eritrea under the name of Britain. She
reminded them of the pledge they gave to
her and the friends of Ethiopia when they
were on the opposition. Since the turn of the
century when she was young, working with
her mother and sister for Womens Political
and Social Suffrage, Sylvia Pankhurst had
been called anti-British.

and Addis Ababa, who were the worst

colonialists, were very critical of her. They
continued to accuse her of being anti-British
and, because of her struggle for universal
suffrage and being a Pankhurst, she was
refused jobs after she finished the art college.

Back home in London, because
she wrote in her own and other national
papers about the British policies in Ethiopia
and Eritrea, the information minister of the
British government labeled her as another
Gobbles-a comparison to the propaganda
minister of Hitler.

Mass murder

President Omar al-Bashir

AFP

Bashir had travelled to Johannesburg
for an African Union summit that was
overshadowed by the International Criminal
Court (ICC) calling for him to be detained on
long-standing arrest warrants over the Darfur
conflict.

Even as his plane took off from
Waterkloof military airport outside Pretoria, the
local high court heard legal arguments over the
application to force the authorities to arrest him.
On Sunday, Judge Hans Fabricius ordered
authorities to stop Bashir from leaving the
country after the Southern African Litigation
Centre, a legal rights group, lodged its urgent
case.

The presidents hurried exit from
South Africa appeared to be a violation of the

[The] world stood [with] South Africa
to fight apartheid but it stands for impunity
for mass murder of Africans, Kenneth Roth,
director of Human Rights Watch, said on Twitter.
South Africa has shamefully flouted ICC and
domestic court to free man wanted for mass
murder of Africans, he added.

South Africa is a signatory of the ICC,
which has often been criticised for only targeting
Africa leaders.

President Bashirs plane took off
from Johannesburg and will arrive around 18:30
(1530 GMT), State Minister for Information

Yasir Yousef told AFP in Khartoum.
Bashir will address the crowds that will gather
to meet him.

The ICC indictments relate to the
western Sudanese region of Darfur, which
erupted into conflict in 2003 when black
insurgents launched a campaign against Bashirs
Arab-dominated government, complaining of
marginalisation.

Khartoum unleashed a bloody counterinsurgency using the armed forces and allied
militia.

International efforts

Assurances given?

The United Nations says 300 000
people have been killed in the conflict and
another 2.5 million forced to flee their homes.
Khartoum, however, disputes the figures,
estimating the death toll at no more than 10,000.
The ICC had called on South Africa to spare
no effort in ensuring the execution of the arrest
warrants against Bashir, 71, who seized power
in Sudan in an Islamist-backed coup in 1989.
The South African government and African
Union made no immediate comment on Bashirs
exit.

The European Union had issued a
statement saying it expects South Africa... [to
act] in executing the arrest warrant against any
ICC indictee present in the country.
The United States, which is not a participant in the
ICC, said it strongly support [ed] international
efforts to hold accountable those responsible

crimes.

At the summit, Bashir attended a group
photograph on Sunday along with South African
host President Jacob Zuma and Zimbabwes
President Robert Mugabe, who is the chair of the
54-member group.

Monday is the closing day of the
summit.
Sudan officials in Johannesburg had earlier
brushed off the court case and said the South
African government had given them assurances
about Bashirs trip before the summit.

part, taken a backseat and been mere observers to

the social ills of their community, the foundation
is empowering them to be the agent of change and
lead the conversation on a slew of pressing local
issues.

Samuel Getachew

The idea is simple but unique among international

organizations. According to the foundation: "It's
time to change the conversation -- to challenge our
understanding and beliefs about how philanthropy
can truly improve the human condition in times of
crisis."
Last night, at the Isabel Bader Theatre in downtown
Toronto, the foundation hosted a sold-out talk
called Ask Her and allowed us all a chance to
interact and have a conversation with some of the
remarkable women of Africa. What an impressive
list of speakers.

Mr, Stephen Lewis

There is no one Canadian that has been a better
advocate for international development and the
ideal of Canadian traditional values than Stephen
Lewis.
He is an important and a remarkable Canadian
voice in the world. As former Canadian Prime
Minister, Brian Mulroney, reflected at a University
of Toronto symposium last year, the one-time
United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in
Africa is someone that articulates "a Canadian
vision of the world that had never been heard
before."
In 1984, when Brian Mulroney won the federal
election and called on Joe Clark to assume
the Foreign Ministry, Clark's only condition
for accepting the appointment, proving Lewis'
nonpartisan appeal, was that Canada's 18th Prime
Minister appoints Lewis as Canadian Ambassador
to the United Nations. A child of an important

NDP dynasty, Lewis used his position at the UN

as a culprit to advocate to make the HIV epidemic
a universal issue and eloquently became the
international voice for millions of famine victims
in Ethiopia.
From politics, to diplomacy, academia and
now activism, Lewis, the son David Lewis, the
legendary advocate and architect of Canada's
multiculturalism policy, is now quietly and
effectively creating a signature difference in many
corners of the world. To the African continent,
where I was born and raised and where charity
organizations are our Tim Horton's, Lewis' efforts
have been far-reaching.
In an effort that is grassroots, different and
authentic, he has partnered with African women
via his foundation leaders to have them become
the main actors in combating their own problems.
In a continent where the women have, for the most

For the foundation as well as Lewis, according to

a press release: "The Ask Her Talks is intended to
give the podium to five knowledgeable, dynamic
and informed African women who will speak
about what happens when crises strike, such as
the AIDS pandemic, Ebola, and sexual violence in
conflict, and the role that philanthropy should now
be playing to meet these challenges."
I had a conversation with one of the speakers, Netty
Musanhu. The Zimbabwean lawyer and Executive
Director of the Musasa Project is passionate about
the work she is involved in and the impact it is
having on the ground.
Her group was founded in 1988 with a simple dream
of wanting to empower Zimbabwean women fight
domestic violence and advocate for their rightful
place in society. Since then, they have focused
on confronting, according to her, "gender-based
violence, support women and children affected by
domestic violence, and lobby nationally for legal
and legislative reform." In addition, they "support
women's needs by providing shelter services,

psycho-social and peer counselling, legal support

and training in advocacy in the organization's
domestic violence and survivors' clubs."
The Stephen Lewis foundation has funded more
than 1000 such initiatives in Africa and has
partnered with hundreds more small organizations
to meet its objectives. Canadians have helped
raise untold resources, over $20 million, for its
Grandmothers initiatives alone to make Lewis's
dream a reality. To the African grandmothers, who
have taken a larger responsibility to raise their
grandchildren as many are becoming orphans
because of HIV/AIDS, Lewis describes them as
citizens "who share the setbacks and the joys, the
agonies and the raptures, the struggles and the
hopes of their orphan grandchildren."
In its 12-year history, the Lewis Foundation has
become one of the most trusted international
charity organizations in the world. To countless
Canadians, such as myself, he has been an
inspiration, as we strive to fulfill the promise of
our international Canadian citizenship.
I was glad to have met Stephen Lewis last night
and have a brief conversation with him and his
equally impressive wife, Michele Landsberg. They
are both kind, compassionate, passionate and they
are everything I want to aspire to become.
As the great one-time Ottawa, the great Marion
Dewar, correctly reflected -- "To end global
poverty and injustice, we need to recognize and
nurture women's leadership." Stephen Lewis
knows that more than anyone I know.

Black Voices Don't Matter to John Tory

Samuel Getachew

Mayor John Tory,

As the debate on carding is all but settled, Toronto
had several community champions who helped
turn the tide and we should all be thankful.
Desmond Cole has been an eloquent and
reasonable voice when it comes to the issue of
carding. Andray Domise deserves a medal for
keeping the issue alive via social media, even
when it seems, it came, at a personal political
cost. Idil Burale brought an exceptional voice
and wise reasons why the issue of carding is
wrong.
Anthony Morgan is a giant and an important
voice of his generation. He continues to bring
substance and intelligence to the discussion of

carding and I am proud to know him. Audrey

Campbell, the civilian co-chair of PACER, has
shown passion and she is a role model for those
who would want to emulate such a powerful
activist role in our society. I wish Mark Warner
was successful being elected an MP in 2007 -I hope his important and smart perspectives on
important public issues found a place in our
House of Commons.
Royson James, Patty Winsa and Jim Rankin from
the Toronto Star are heroes and reflect the better
principles of John Atkinson.
Groups such as Black Lives Matter Toronto and
NEPV and many others -- thank you.

In a world, where reasonable black outrage and

passion, is still viewed as militant and fringe,
none of these voices mattered for John Tory since
he became mayor last year. Since taking over
the mayoralty, he has championed and endorsed
carding -- envisioning a second class citizenship
to those who do not share his skin complexion.
Defiant of the black communities' outrage, he had
called the practice, as "the only way forward after
an eight-month stalemate".

Saunders, who once claimed that "crime would

increase if the controversial practice halts" -- the
sudden change of heart from the mayor was an
obvious shock as witnessed on CBC's Morning
Show this morning. He sounded clueless and
unprofessional -- the way Jean Chrtien, as
Canada's first Francophone Finance Minister,
was to Pierre Trudeau a holder of title without
much contribution in the construction of rules
and policies.

Former Ontario Cabinet Minister, Mary Anne

Chambers, was even asked, "Why only black
people seemed opposed to the controversial
policing practice." Are the concerns of people
who look like me less important?

As the first Toronto black police chief, I wonder

if his milestone is in name only. How could any
smart black person defend a practice that hurts
people of color?

Last Wednesday, the mostly non-black voice -Gordon Cressy, Roy McMurtry, Barbara Hall,
David Crombie, and John Sewell -- spoke and
John Tory listened and acted swiftly. They called
carding something that reflects, "anger, hurt and
unrest" rather than any benefits to society. In
four days, the champion of the values of carding,
Toronto's 65th mayor, went from being its most
prominent supporter to calling it "illegitimate and
disrespectful." He added, how "it has "eroded the
public trust."
Which public? The white or the black community?
Should it even matter? Apparently, it does.
To the new Toronto Police Chief, Mark

At the end, Gordon Cressy, the architect of the

press conference, reflected how Tory's change of
heart was a "good start toward accomplishing the
goal" and that "It's a good beginning in the long
fight for justice," and "the mayor listened."
It is just unfortunate it took four years for the
black community to be listened to and mere days
for the "other" voice.
To John Tory, who was once asked if white
privilege exists and he responded -- "White
privilege? No, I don't know that it does." -- let
this be a lesson learned, to him and others, that
white privilege does indeed exist in our society.

National Flag of Canada Day and the

50th anniversary of our Flag Day

1The flag is the symbol of
the nations unity, for it, beyond any
doubt, represents all the citizens of
Canada without distinction of race,
language, belief or opinion, declared
the Speaker of the Senate at the
Inauguration of the new flag in 1965.

On February 15, 1965 our
national flag was raised for the first
time on Parliament Hill. Canada was
just two years away from centennial
celebrations when the maple leaf
flag was made official by Royal
Proclamation. In 1996, February 15
was declared National Flag of Canada
Day and has been observed every year
since.

February 15, 2015, marked

the 50th anniversary of the National

Flag of Canada. Canadians are invited
throughout the year to join together
and celebrate this important symbol
of our Canadian identity by organizing
their own events and by showing their
pride on social media.

Arrest over Amanda Lindhout

kidnapping shows Canada now
serious about defending its citizens

RCMP assistant commissioner James Malizia, left, and Insp. Paul Mellon speak in Ottawa about the arrest
of a Somali man, Ali Omar Ader (shown on the screen), for his involvement in the kidnapping of Canadian
journalist Amanda Lindhout, Friday, June 12, 2015.

IAN MACLEOD,

Analysis

OTTAWA Time and distance
are no longer a shield from Canadian
justice for foreign terrorists and other
international adversaries. Thats the
message from the RCMPs groundbreaking
arrest in Ottawa of Somali Ali Omar Ader
for the 2008 kidnapping of Canadian
journalist Amanda Lindhout in Somalia.

The RCMP announced the arrest
Friday morning, describing Ader as one
of the main negotiators for the Islamist
group that seized Lindhout and Australian
photographer Nigel Brennan in August of
2008. Ader, 37, came to Canada a few days
ago and was arrested Thursday.

Lindhout and Brennan were
released from more than a year of
captivity in November 2009, after their
families paid a ransom. The RCMP had
been working on a criminal investigation
since Lindhout was kidnapped, involving
undercover operations, wiretaps and other
surveillance, much of it taking place in
Somalia.

While a direct link to terrorism
is so far tangential Somali Islamic
extremists were allegedly behind it, but
Ader is charged with the non-terrorist
offence of hostage-taking the point is
all about terrorism: Canada now appears
capable and serious about defending its
citizens and national security through nonmilitary action, no matter how far-flung in
space and time.
Consider the enormous operational
difficulties and presumed dangers
investigators and undercover agents would
have faced in discovering and collecting
hard prosecutorial evidence against Ader

amid the chaos and anarchy of the Islamist

insurgency and warlords in Mogadishu and
southern Somalia before the installation of
a new federal government there in 2012.

Its a measure of just how
far Canada has come since Sept. 11,
2001, when the country woke up to the
realization it had few defences against
such ruthless threats and raced to catch
up. Now, it seems, Canadian laws and
institutions have evolved to a level where
the Mounties and supporting agencies
have taken a page from al-Qaidas strategy
and adjusted their methods by going after
transnational targets.

(Section 7.(3.1) of the Criminal
Code gives police extra-territorial
jurisdiction for crimes against aviation,
maritime shipping, cultural property,
internationally protected persons and the
kidnapping of Canadians.)

Terrorists
monitor
nations
capabilities to counter threats and will take
notice of the intelligence-gathering, police
work and the extra-territorial reach of the
Criminal Code behind the investigation,
called Project Slype. It is unlikely to stop
the committed, hard-core extremists of
the Islamic State, but may cause overseas
recruiters and other operatives and
supporters to think twice.
That the Mounties grabbed Ader in Ottawa
is another success, though how and why
the Somali national arrived in capital a few
days ago is a mystery.

The city has a large Somali
diaspora. Was he visiting family and
friends or somehow lured here by a
police sting operation? Or was Ader here
on business or some mission several
Somali-Canadians have been linked to the
terror group al-Shabab and under police
watch?

Ethiopia's crackdown on dissent drives opposition to push

for 'freedom first'

TZTA: Page 22: June 2015: tzta@bellnet.ca / info@tzta.ca / www.tzta.ca.: Follow

Since then, electoral politics has

presented a dilemma for the opposition,
which participates in a process it calls
undemocratic. Some observers say the
opposition must work within this narrow
political space to build from the grassroots,
aiming to make gains first in local
elections in 2017. In addition to the federal
parliament, the EPRDF holds almost all
other elected positions in the country.
Beyene Petros from the Medrek coalition,
the main opposition party, disagrees,
arguing that peaceful resistance is necessary
to push this group to the negotiating table
on levelling the electoral landscape.

The Guardian
By William Davison,
Governments critics weigh options after
ruling party landslide leads to loss of faith
in ballot box while case of Zone 9 bloggers
discourages free speech
On the very day Ethiopias ruling party
celebrated another crushing electoral
victory, a young blogger on trial under
anti-terrorism laws in an Addis Ababa
courtroom lashed out at the authorities.
You yourself should respect the law,
said Abel Wabella, 28, from the Zone 9
blogging group, after judges denied him
the chance to protest against the tortuous
pace of legal proceedings that began more
than a year ago.
The case of nine journalists and bloggers
arrested in 2014 has been decried byhuman
rights groups as an example of Ethiopian
authorities crackdown on dissent. The
nine were detained on allegations that they
worked for foreign human rights groups or
had used social media to incite violence.
Prosecutors have yet to present any
evidence of illegal activity against the
Zone 9 defendants, who say they merely
exercised their constitutional right
to freedom of expression. Wabellas
frustration is symptomatic of a generation
of politically engaged Ethiopians who have
no faith in the ballot box and are wary of
expressing dissent through other channels
in a country that is regularly criticised by
rights groups for stifling basic freedoms.
The latest landslide at the ballot box
means that Ethiopia will be ruled until
at least 2020 by the Ethiopian Peoples
Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF),
a former rebel group, which took power
in 1991 by unseating a military regime.
All 442 constituencies announced so far
have gone to the ruling coalition, giving
them a majority in the 547-seat parliament.
Opponents of the government despair
at this stagnant environment, said one
government critic on social media, who
did not want to be identified for fear of
being harassed by the authorities. If Zone
9 is not tolerated then it seems there is no
political space to engage, he said.
The opposition lost in all 23 constituencies
in Addis Ababa last month, including the
one seat they had won in 2010. Local
newspaper reports suggest the EPRDF
increased its share of the popular vote by
10% to 64%.
Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegns
government says it has delivered economic
development and stability, but critics
maintain this has come at the cost of
human rights.

Yilkal Getnet, leader of opposition rising

star the Blue party, says the claims of
economic development are not real. The
Blue party captured 16% of the vote in
Addis Ababa this time, but failed to secure
a seat under the first-past-the-post electoral
system.

But the party, which was formed in 2012,

now needs a more substantial and moderate
programme, he said. The vast majority of
the voters are in the middle. You have to
focus on them rather than those that have
made up their mind.
With more than 2 million Facebook users
in Ethiopia, the opposition should also use
social media more to reach out to young
undecided voters, Asrat said.

The suggestion for every political actor is

therefore to stick to the hard but the possible
and relevant political path available, ie the
formal democratic way, he wrote in an
essay in May.
Some opponents agree that new leaders
wont change systemic problems. What
is needed is a shift to more consensual
politics that accommodates Ethiopias
diverse viewpoints, said the critic on social
media, who did not give his name.

The idea of urban disobedience forcing Asrat, the entrepreneur, is pessimistic

Getachew Reda, a special adviser to

Desalegn, said the overwhelming victory is
natural given the EPRDFs achievements
and protest votes against opponents who
were there for the noise and blood of it,
rather than as serious contenders.
The most significant challenge to the
EPRDFs domination came in a 2005
vote, when an opposition coalition made
significant gains in urban areas. The results
were disputed, and thousands of people
took to the streets to protest. Security
forces killed 193 people and opposition
leaders were imprisoned. Seven policemen
were also killed.
The government said the opposition
was trying to use violence to force an
unconstitutional change. It enacted
laws to restrict dissent and began to
solicit investment for projects such as
roads, universities, low-cost apartments,
hydropower dams and sugar factories.

Ethiopias diplomatic representative in

Hong Kong has emerged as one of the
citys most outspoken defenders of the
ivory trade, despite the East African
nations efforts to stem the flow of white
gold across its borders.
Dennis Ng Wang-pun heads up the
Ethiopian diplomatic office in Hong Kong,
based in the Hung Hom premises of his
company Polaris, a jeweller that previously
traded in ivory.
Both the business and the consulate share
the same fax number, according to the
company website and that of the Hong
Kong governments protocol division.
Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa is a key
transit point for ivory leaving Africa en
route to Asia and last year authorities there
arrested 106 people in connection with
illegal ivory trafficking - nearly all of them
mainland Chinese transit passengers.
The Ethiopian government has made
stringent efforts to stop the trade, including
hosting workshops for Chinese citizens
living in Africa and publicly incinerating
its entire 6.1-tonne ivory stockpile.
However, documents seen by the Sunday
Morning Post reveal Ng as an outspoken
opponent of destroying seized ivory, as
well as banning the trade.
Destroying the stockpile or [banning] the
trade cant solve the problemDENNIS NG
In a letter sent to the Hong Kong
government last week - obtained by the
Post - Ng said: There are many ways to
handle the ivory stockpile. Destroying the
confiscated stockpile or issuing a complete
ban on the trade cannot solve the problem!
In previous letters to the government and
legislators, Ng said that as a former player
in the ivory industry he was deeply
heartbroken to hear the authorities would
destroy Hong Kongs then-stockpile of 28
tonnes.
The destruction would end the precious
tradition of ivory carving, Ng said,
adding that the government could use the
materials to instead build an ivory theme
park to promote elephant protection.
As an honorary consul, Ngs powers
fall short of those of a career diplomat,
but his comments are likely to cause
embarrassment amid heated debate and
shifting attitudes on elephant conservation.
Ng did not respond to messages left with
his assistant.

Emails sent to the Ethiopian consulate in

Hong Kong and the embassy in Beijing
went unanswered. A spokesman for the
embassy said: Let me think it over.
Since last year, Hong Kong has been
gradually incinerating its ivory stockpile
- a move aimed at demonstrating the
authorities determination to stop the
illegal trade.
However, the city also maintains a legal
market, which allows 413 anonymous
dealers to trade ivory obtained prior to a
1989 international ban.
Yet the size of those private reserves
has not dropped significantly over
recent years, leading many anti-ivory
campaigners - including some prominent
pro-establishment legislators - to believe
ivory is being smuggled and mixed into the
cache.
A recent University of Hong Kong study
showed overwhelming public support
for a ban on the local sale of ivory - a
prospect the government has ruled out as
unnecessary.
The
Agriculture,
Fisheries
and
Conservation Department, which oversees
the citys ivory regime, says the current
regulatory framework is effective.
The sentiment is increasingly at odds with
Beijing, which is becoming more vocal
about wiping out the trade.
We will strictly control ivory processing
and trade until the commercial processing
and sale of ivory and its products are
eventually halted, said Zhao Shucong,
minister of the state forestry administration,
following the destruction of 662kg of ivory
in Beijing late last month.
Ng is not the first diplomat ensnared in an
ivory row.
A report by NGO the Environmental
Investigation Agency in November found
Chinese officials travelling to Tanzania
on a state visit with President Xi Jinping
bought so much ivory the local market
price soared.
The claims were rejected by both the
Tanzanian and Chinese governments.

By Emebet Bekele Asegidew

Introduction

Immediately after it came to power

in 1991, the government of Ethiopia
declared that its economic development
strategy was going to be AgricultureLed-Industrialization (ADLI). Only
God knows how agriculture leads
to industrialization. This strategy
primarily focuses on the promotion of
agricultural-led industrialization, export
development, and expansion of labor
intensive industries. After over two
decades in power, the government claims
that it has achieved an economic miracle
by using this magic formula hitherto
unachieved by any previous government
of Ethiopia and any other current or past
government in sub-Saharan Africa.
Despite this inflated claim of economic
transformation and double digit growth,
agriculture is still the most important and
single economic sector in the Ethiopian
economy as it was 24 years ago. The
sector directly supports about 85% of the
population in terms of employment and
livelihood; contributes about 50% of the
countrys gross domestic product (GDP);
generates about 88% of the export
earnings; and supplies around 73% of
the raw material requirement of agrobased domestic industries ( Gene et al.,
2011). It is also the major source of food
for the population and hence; the prime
contributing sector to food security
(Yesuf, 2008). However, small-scale
farmers who are dependent on low input
and low output rain-fed mixed farming
with traditional technologies dominate
the agricultural sector.
In addition to this, as researches conducted
on the vulnerability of agriculture to
climate change indicated that decline in
precipitation and increases in temperature
are both damaging Ethiopian agriculture
and has increased its vulnerability. What
makes the situation even worse is that
the government of Ethiopia does not
admit the findings of these researches.
It wrongly assumes that the researches
are malignantly aiming at agricultural
and economic transformation. In spite
of my best effort to remain neutral
the result of the following survey I
conducted in the Boset Wereda in 2012/3
indicated that science is not in favor of
the state propaganda, especially with
regard to climate change and farmers
vulnerability.
To gather information, focused group
discussions (FDGs) and key informant
interviews were carried out. The Key
informants were Peasant Association
(PA) administrators, development agents
and community based organizations
office holders whereas the focused group
discussions were conducted with elders,
women, youth groups and sector office
experts.

Farmers perceptions on local

climate variability/change
All participants of FGDs, key informant
and expert interviewees recognized that
there have been changes in the amount,
timing and distribution of rainfall in
the study area over the past 30 years.
Farmers of the area were aware of the
fact that the local climate has been

changing as compared to the situation in

the past thirty years. 95.7% and 93.1% of
the respondents claim that there has been
an overall increase in temperature and
decrease in rainfall, respectively over the
past three decades. They also perceived
that rainfall has become more variable
and erratic as compared to the situation
in the past. They reported that in some
years the rain starts late and stops early.
As a result, the crops cannot get enough
rain and time to give the intended
product and sometimes it leads to total
failure of crops. What one key informant
said summarizes everything:
I lived here in Boset Woreda for about
48 years. I can tell you that climate of
the area was different from that of today.
For example, before ten or fifteen years,
at least we received enough amount of
rain to harvest during the meher
season and there was belg rain which
was helpful to prepare our agricultural
land for the next harvesting time.
However, these days there is no enough
rain and if it comes, it is very intense
and stayed for short period which
resulted in flood. For the belg rain,
most of the time it does not come or is
not enough to wet the farm land. As
a result, there is an increase in weeds
during the harvesting season.

Perceived Impacts of Climate

Variability/Change in the Area
Almost all of the respondents in the
study area recognized that climate
variability/change has been affecting
the area in different ways. The reduction
of production has been the foremost
effect of climate variability/change in
their Woreda. Increase in incidence of
plant diseases and insects, increase in
incidence of animal diseases, weeds,
and flood and drought were also impacts
which were spotted by the respondents.
With regard to the impact of climate
variability on livestock, the respondents
reported that livestock numbers have
decreased in the area and the main
reason for the decrease in the numbers
of livestock per households had been
shortage of animal feed and water. The
death of livestock due to animal diseases
is also another reason. The land use/
land cover trends of the area are also
supported the idea of the farmers related
to shortage of forage for animals as the
coverage of bush and grasslands were
replaced by farmlands and settlements.
During the FGDs, the members explained
that the decreasing number of livestock
especially oxen make the farming
activity difficult as they are dependent on
them for the preparation of farm lands.
One of the members of the FGDs said
that:
The unpredictability of the rain affects
all of us as our life is totally dependent
on the availability of enough rain water
for our crops and livestock. These days
being a farmer is very difficult and
disappointing. You cannot get what you
are expecting at the end of the harvesting
time either due to the shortage of rain
or crop diseases and pests. Besides
you have to suffer with your livestock
whenever there is shortage of water and
pasture/ forage for them.

How the Government Treats the

Information

Unfortunately, the development agents

and agricultural officers in the study
area are assigned by the government.
They are selected based on their political
affiliation to the ruling party regardless of
their merits. In line with their loyalty they
try to refute any finding which may have
an implication on the achievement of the
economic strategy designed by the late
dictator Melses Zenawi. Therefore, they
zealously argue against the experience of
the farmers and knowledge and findings
of agricultural experts. They explained
that livestock diseases and crop pests
and insects were not new for the study
area and it has nothing to do with climate
variability/change. They also stated that
all the stated problems were the idea of
some farmers and individuals who could
not appreciate all the achievements
scored by the government. According
to them though there is a slight change
in the climate of the area, the farmers
were not impacted by it. The reason for
this assertion was that the government
is applying different strategies such as
irrigation activities and well planed early
warning system so that the farmers can
easily cop up with the change. However,
all the reality which was observed in the
study area during the survey was totally
in contradiction with the claim of the
agricultural officers and development
agents.
Moreover, the government of Ethiopia

portrays itself as the driver of an economic

miracle in Africa and would not allow
the opinion of famers and agricultural
experts on climate change to interfere
with the utopia. The government goes
an extra mile to convince the farmers
that all is well and climate change is
controlled, despite the experience of
the framers to the contrary. There is
ample evidence showing that farmers
who make suggestions that contradict
government reports and figures are
subjected political harassment and
alienation The opinions of the farmers
on climate change therefore could be
contradictory when given in the presence
of the political cadres and alone. It is high
time for International organizations and
donor countries to turn to questioning
the credibility of government reports
about the transformative changes in the
lives of Ethiopian farmers. I suggest they
conduct their researches in the absence
of cadres who are invariably designated
as development agents and agricultural
officer and make sure farmers speak only
positive things about the government of
Ethiopia.

Acupuncture and Natural Therapies

for Migraine Headaches
Acupuncture and Chinese medicine have misuse of ones ambition. When this is the
enjoyed a long and successful history
of treating a wide variety of headache
patterns. Migraine headaches currently
affect around half a million Canadians.
The cause of migraines eludes many of
its sufferers. Certain foods have been
identified as triggers. Stress, anxiety, and
hormonal imbalances have also been
found to play a role. Many people with
migraines feel hopeless, as they have tried
conventional medications such as imitrex
without good effect.
In Chinese medicine, migraines have a few
different causes. The number one pattern
underlying migraines is liver qi stagnation.
This means that the functional energy of
the liver becomes stuck and hyperactive.
This is usually due to pent up anger or a
chronic inability to express ones emotions.
Liver related headaches tend to run along
the temples, as the gall bladder meridian,
which is closely connected with the liver,
travels through this area.
Another cause of migraine headaches is
kidney deficiency which is synonymous
with adrenal fatigue. This pattern is due to
overwork, excessive will power, and the

predominant pattern, one will experience

migraines when they are resting. They
work hard all week and run on adrenaline,
then collapse on the weekend and get a
migraine. The bladder meridian, which
is closely associated with the kidney
meridian, runs along the nape of the neck.
This is the primary origin of headaches due
to a kidney deficient pattern.
Acupuncture is certainly worth pursuing as
a powerful treatment option for migraines.
The typical course of treatment in my
practice is once a week for 6-8 visits, at
which time we will assess where to go
from there. Acupuncture is usually a
deeply relaxing experience that optimizes
ones overall level of health. It has no side
effects.
Chinese herbs are typically used in
conjunction with acupuncture. The
following herbal formulas can be
considered in the treatment of migraines:

While the Montessori Method is
regarded as one of the greatest methods for
teaching pre-school and elementary children,
one finds that it also works wonders in
establishing a greater sense of confidence
while engaging patients in activities that
THEY find rewarding. With this unique
training under a PSW's (Personal Support
Worker) belt, they are not only equipped for
dealing with the challenges of Dementia in
their patients, but for the challenges of every
day life.

Canada cannot seem to make up its
mind regarding unemployment rates, with
part time jobs enduring the biggest fall of the
past four years, with 66.5 thousand jobs lost.
To offset this, full-time jobs have gradually
been climbing, with 46.9 thousand full time
jobs added. Although more people are out
of work, more full-time jobs are being filled
up. This means that thousands of part-time
workers, some of whom hope to find a fulltime job are simply out of luck.

Fortunately, there is one industry
in particular that has maintained a healthy
growth rate, with the only requirements for
entry being a basic high school education.
This industry is none other than healthcare,
and there has been a stark rise in employment
and job offerings throughout the past year.

Due to a compound of both
advancements in modern medicine and the
baby boomer generation reaching old age,
there have been dozens of colleges and
hospitals who've made a name for themselves
in the past few years. One in particular
espouses an older method of teaching that
has yet to be seen outside of that restrictive
barrier; the Montessori Method. Peak
College, located at Sheppard and Bathurst,
has taken giant steps in this industry, and

Perhaps the greatest reason to
become a Personal Support Worker is
the tangible difference you can make in
your community. On top of the previously
mentioned benefits, there is not only an aging
population to account for, but an aging caretaker population. In Canada, one finds that
the majority of Personal Support Workers are
aged 50 to 59-years-old, and thus will be
retiring soon (CRNCC & PSNO, 2009).

Consider the possibility that
someone might wish to work more intimately
in the medical field, however lacks the
qualifications to do so. All one needs to
secure a job as a Personal Support Worker is
a 1 semester diploma from a certified college,
lasting over 26 weeks; to be eligible, Peak
College requires a bit more, with a personal
interview and minor admission test required.
As a result, new colleges such as Peak have
made tremendous waves in the world of the
Personal Support Worker, and graduates find
themselves set to launch even further towards
their hearts desires.
