PROSE is any writing that is not poetry.

A prose account that is made up rather than true.


Ex. short stories, novels
- Prose consists of those written within the common flow of conversation in
sentence and paragraph
POETRY is a kind of rhythmic compressed language that uses figures of speech and
imagery to appeal

KINDS OF PROSE
1. ESSAY
- Is a prose of any length intended to present a tentative exploration or
evaluation of a subject.
- Several sentences
- A single word
- Phrase
- One or more paragraphs
The form of an essay composed of several paragraphs
Parts of an essay (Introductory, supporting paragraph, concluding paragraph)
1. Beginning to introduce the subject of the essay to suggest the
importance of the subject
2. Middle It should be controlled by a singleness of purpose, unity of
the intention of the essay
3. Ending to reiterate and summarize the central idea of the essay to
point out some of the applications to simulate the desire to read
further of the ideas discussed in the study of the essay.
TYPES/CATEGORIES OF ESSAY
1. FORMAL it has a natural instinctive free flow of ideas;
2. INFORMAL it uses language and style that maintain more both the
subject and the reader
2. SHORT STORY

It is a short phrase
With a single incident
It clarifies some truth about human nature
It enables the readers to enrich their experiences
When they share unique moment of insight (truth)
3. NOVEL
- These are long narratives

- Events are usually true to life


- It came from a long period of time
- there are many characters involved
- it is divided into chapters
4. FABLE
- these are fictitious
- it deals with animals and inanimate things
- who speak and act like people
- Its purpose is to enlighten the mind of children to events that can
mold their ways
and attitudes
5. BIOGRAPHY
- these are stories on the life of the person, either a person who is the
author or of
others
6. ORATION
- this is formal treatment of a subject and which is intended to be
spoken in public
- it appeals to the will or to the emotions of the audiences.
7. NEWS
- this is a report of events
8. CONTEMPORARY DRAMA
- this is presented on a stage and each act has many scenes
